WILLIAM SMITH TURNS BACK SAINTS IN LIBERTY LEAGUE OPENERS Mar. 24: Jesse McKenna scored three goals in the first half as William Smith rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to take a 10-3 halftime lead en route a 13-8 win over St. Lawrence in the women’s lacrosse Liberty League season opener for both teams at SLU’s North Country Field Friday afternoon.
The Saints received two goals from Lis Reade and a third from Sofie Malinowski in the first 3:18 of the game for the quick start, but the Herons scored ten straight goals to take control of the game.
The team traded goals early in the second half and the Saints cut the William Smith lead to 12-7 with 11:09 to play, but Sarah Dillon scored on a free position with 6:05 to play and the Herons controlled play the rest of the way to improve to 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League.
Reade led the Saints with four goals and two assists and Malinowski finished with two goals. McKenna and Dillon had three goals each for William Smith.
Morgan Baird had 13 saves for the Herons while Ali Mattison had five first half saves and Cynthia Saul had four in the second half for the Saints, now 0-3 and 0-1.
