SAINTS FALL IN SEASON OPENER TO NAZARETH, 12-5 Mar. 18: The St. Lawrence University women's lacrosse team opened their 2006 schedule with a road game against the Nazareth Golden Flyers in Rochester, NY. The Saints got two goals from senior Meghan Clement, but were unable to overcome the Golden Flyers' offense, which paced the home team to a 12-5 win on Friday afternoon.
Nazareth scored the game's first three goals in the opening ten minutes, grabbing the early momentum. However, St. Lawrence would cut into the 3-0 lead at 13:06 of the first half, when sophomore Sofie Malinowski tallied her first goal of the season to make the score 3-1. Unfortunately, the Nazareth offense was too strong, and scored three straight goals to close the half.
Although Nazareth's Amy O'Donnell scored a mere 12 seconds into the second half, Clement scored her first of the game just over two minutes later to cut the score to 7-2. After the home team built up a 9-2 lead after goals by Beth Quartier and Maggie Mullin, the Saints made their last stand. The visitors scored three goals in less than three minutes to cut the gap to 9-5. Juniors Shannon Garrett and Kathryn Durki brought St. Lawrence to within 9-4, then Clement scored to pull one closer with only 12:08 remaining in the game.
However, that would be the last rally the Saints would make as Nazareth finished the game with three goals to complete the scoring at 12-5.
Clement added an assist to her two goal performance, while junior goaltenders Cynthia Saul and Ali Mattison split time for the Saints between the pipes. The duo combined for eight saves on the day.
The Saints now head south where they will play one game in Florida over the university's spring break period. St. Lawrence will face Middlebury on Monday, March 20th. The team then returns to Canton, NY to host the Liberty League's opening game on Friday, March 24th against William Smith. The game is scheduled to start at 4:00pm.
