BERNER’S GOAL LIFTS SAINTS IN OT AT CLARKSON

April 22: Senior Wendy Berner scored her first career game-winning goal with 46 seconds left in the first three-minute overtime period to lift St. Lawrence University’s women’s lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over Clarkson

University in Potsdam on Saturday, continuing the Saints’ perfect record against Clarkson in women’s lacrosse.

 

The 31 st consecutive win for the Saints in the series between the two North Country teams did not come easy as Clarkson, 4-10 overall and 0-8 in the Liberty League, held a 5-4 halftime lead and led 8-6 with 12:22 to go before the Saints scored three straight to take their first lead since the midway point of the first half.

 

Alanna Waters scored back-to back goals at 12:22 and 10:33 to tie the game for the Saints and Sofie Malinowski put SLU ahead 9-8 with her fourth of the game with 9:53 to play.

 

Linsday Walker scored from Lindsey Grigg with 37 seconds to play in regulation time to force the overtime period with Berner scoring her second of game and third of the season on a free position to win the game.

Saint goalie Ali Mattison finished with 14 saves while Erin Duffy made six for Clarkson as Clarkson had a 36-26 edge in shots on goal.

 

Malinowski scored two goals in just over two minutes early in the first half to erase an early 2-0 Clarkson lead. Patty Ball put the Saints in front with 20:14 to play and Waters made it a 4-2 Saint lead from Malinowski, but Clarkson battled back with three straight goals to take the halftime lead.
