2007-08 SQUAD RANKS THIRD NATIONALLY

ON ACADEMIC HONOR ROLL

Jul. 16: The St. Lawrence University women’s basketball extended their successes on the court to the classroom in the 2007-2008 season, as the Saints’ team cumulative grade point average (GPA) ranked them third among all Division III women’s basketball programs according to the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 2007-08 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll released on Monday.

St. Lawrence’s team GPA, which was a 3.528, placed them just behind Concordia University (WI), who had a 3.637 overall GPA, while Messiah College came in second with a 3.627.

The Saints have maintained a high level of achievement both on and off the court in years past, as they routinely have one of the highest team GPAs out of each of the 32 teams at St. Lawrence.  Six members of the 2007-08 team were named to the Liberty League All Academic Team (sophomores, juniors and seniors who maintain a 3.2 GPA or higher), tying Vassar College for the most players awarded the honor of any other team in the conference.  St. Lawrence was the only team in the Liberty League and the only Division III school in New York State to be named to the honor roll.

The Scarlet and Brown, who were the 2008 Liberty League Champions, enjoyed their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament this season, where they defeated William Paterson in the first round before falling to Messiah College, who would eventually make it to the national championship game, in the second.

The WBCA Academic Honor Roll awards teams throughout the nation that carry the highest grade point averages (GPA) for the entire season, according to the press release.  GPAs are calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by each student-athlete on an institution's roster in the given academic terms by the total number of hours earned by the team. The GPAs are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Per a motion passed by the WBCA Board of Directors in 2007, teams making the list of Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll must obtain at least a 3.000 overall GPA.

WOLFF, PALMER NAMED 2008 NYSWCAA

ALL-STARS

Apr. 2: The New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association (NYSWCAA) announced their 2008 NYSWCAA Basketball All-Stars on Tuesday, naming St. Lawrence senior guard and co-captain Jamie Wolff and junior forward Katie Palmer to the short list of honorees.

Wolff (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) and Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) were two of 10 players to be named All-Stars, a list that only contained three Liberty League players including the two Saints.

Combined, the two players accounted for 908 of St. Lawrence’s 1906 points in the 2007-2008 season. Wolff, who tallied 470 points, and Palmer who had 438, were the top two point scorers in the Liberty League this past season. Their efforts led the Scarlet and Brown to their first conference tournament title, as well as their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance.

St. Lawrence was one of two schools represented twice on the list, with the other being Cortland. Others honorees included William Smith’s Marissa Vespa, who was also named NYSWCAA Player of the Year, Jessica McEntee (NYU), Ashley Broadhurst (Brockport) , Jessica Laing (Cortland) , Julie Marriott (Rochester) , Allison Boehm (St. John Fisher) , Jessica Berry (Utica) and Sara Cavanaugh (Cortland).

Berry was voted NYSWCAA’s Rookie of the Year, while William Smith Head Coach Lindsay Drury was named Coach of the Year.

All honorees were voted on by basketball members of the NYSWCAA.
