WOLFF NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP, EARNS ALL-CONFERENCE HONORS; PALMER NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM Nov. 20: The Liberty League honored senior captain Jamie Wolff by naming her “Co-Guard of the Week” for her performances this past weekend in the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament, where St. Lawrence won the title game against Stevens Institute, 66-59. Wolff was also named the tournament's MVP for her efforts while teammate Katie Palmer was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Wolff led St. Lawrence to the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament title game with 18 points in the season opener against New Jersey City on Saturday. The Buffalo, NY native had four rebounds and four assists in her 38 minutes of play, as well as two steals. In the championship game, Wolff tallied 11 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in 38 minutes for the Saints, helping them to a 66-59 win over Stevens.
Palmer led the Saints to a sweep over the weekend and the Stevens Tip Off Tournament championship title, tallying 31 points for the weekend. On Saturday, the Bourne, MA forward had 12 points and five assists with four assists and one steal. In the title game, she was 5-for-9 from the floor and 9-for-10 from the line and had a team-high of 19 points with six rebounds and 2 assists.
The Saints will face the neighboring Potsdam Bears on the court on Tuesday night, with the tip-off scheduled for 6:00pm.
SAINTS TAKE STEVENS IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, 66-59 Nov. 18: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team dominated in the first half of the game against Stevens Institute, giving them a 66-59 win over the Ducks to win the 2007 Stevens Tip-Off Tournament title Sunday afternoon at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, NJ.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the first half as they took control of the game and the scoreboard with a jumper by junior Jenna Krzemien with the game only 2:32 old to give the Saints a 4-3 lead. The Ducks would keep it close, bringing the score within two after a layup from Stevens’ Dora Enright to make the score 15-13 with St. Lawrence just ahead with 10:46 remaining in the half. But the Saints would extend their lead with a 21-7 run after Enright’s shot, to lead 36-20 at the half.
In the second half, the Saints continued to control the game right from the beginning, with senior Kim Sikule making a shot from the free-throw line after a foul was called on Stevens. Junior Lauren Sischo increased the lead to 20 for the Scarlet and Brown as the Rodman, NY native made a three-pointer with 18:30 left in the game to give the Saints a 40-20 advantage.
Enright would make another layup with 17:58 left on the clock, but Saints’ Katie Palmer brought the lead back up to 20 after making two free throw shots from the line. The Ducks made an intense comeback in the game after a three-pointer from Brittany Fuller with 12:39 remaining, as the Saints watched their lead dwindle from 13 to 2 with only 1:22 left in the game after Stevens had a 22-11 run and Fuller netted her second three-pointer of the afternoon. Senior Jamie Wolff made a three-pointer after an assist from Sischo with :52 left, and Stevens continued to foul the Saints, giving St. Lawrence six free throw attempts, with Sikule making 3-of-4, and Palmer making two, giving the Saints a decisive lead in the final seconds, despite a last-second three-pointer from Stevens’ Fuller to end the game 66-59.
Palmer led the Saints with 19 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. She also had two assists and six rebounds for St. Lawrence.
Sikule also had an impressive day with 13 points and 9 total rebounds, with one assist and three steals, while Wolff had 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Sischo, who played the entire game for the Saints, shot 3-for-5 from the floor and had seven points, four assists, and four total rebounds.
Krzemien had eight points and two rebounds, while sophomore Brittany Parham shot 3-for-6 for St. Lawrence and had six points in the championship game. Senior Amy Fortener also scored in the Saints, tallying two points for the day.
The Saints, who are now, 2-0, will open at home this season against Potsdam on Tuesday, November 20 th. The tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
SAINTS TOP GOTHIC KNIGHTS AT STEVENS TOURNEY IN SEASON OPENER, 79-56 Nov. 17: The St. Lawrence University women’s basketball team surged in the middle of the second half and were able to maintain a big lead to earn their first win of the season over New Jersey City University at the Stevens Tip-Off Tournament in Hoboken, NJ on Saturday afternoon, 79-56. The win gives the Saints a spot in the tournament’s championship game on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Jenna Krzemien was the first to score for the Saints 59 seconds into the game, giving St. Lawrence a very early lead and some energy for the beginning of the first half. For the next two minutes, St. Lawrence and New Jersey City battled for the lead, and with the game only 3:14 old, Gothic Knight Angela Fitzgerald made a layup to give New Jersey City a slight 6-5 lead over the Saints.
The Gothic Knights ran with that lead for more than 12 minutes, and at a couple points in the first half, led the Saints by six points. But the Scarlet and Brown did not back down, posting a 16-7 run in the last six minutes of half, taking a 27-25 lead with 4:38 left after junior Katie Palmer’s shot from outside the arc was good. The Saints’ momentum carried through the remainder of the half, giving them a 36-32 lead over New Jersey City as they headed into halftime.
In the second, the Gothic Knights would make it a one-point game, 39-38 with the Saints having the slight lead, early on with 18:26 left in the game after a three-pointer from New Jersey City’s Tania Greenleaf. But St. Lawrence made sure it didn’t get that close again, as the women had a 15-0 run in the next 6:12 of the half to give them a 13 point lead.
The Saints continued to dominate for the remainder of the game, leading by as many as 27 at one point, and earned the win with a final score of 79-56.
Senior captain Jamie Wolff led the way for the Saints with 18 points, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor and sinking two three-pointers. The Buffalo, NY guard also had four assists.
Junior Lauren Sischo also posted an impressive game, shooting 6-for-9 from the floor and totaling 16 points in her 34 minutes of play. The Rodman, NY native also had seven assists and three steals, as well as six rebounds for the Scarlet and Brown.
Krzemien tallied 14 points, one assist, one block and a game-high four steals, while junior Katie Palmer had 12 points and four assists.
The Saints will face host Stevens Institute of Technology in the tournament championship game on Sunday afternoon. The tip-off is set for 3:00pm.
