SAINTS TAKE STEVENS IN CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, 66-59 Nov. 18: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team dominated in the first half of the game against Stevens Institute, giving them a 66-59 win over the Ducks to win the 2007 Stevens Tip-Off Tournament title Sunday afternoon at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, NJ.
The Saints jumped out to an early lead in the first half as they took control of the game and the scoreboard with a jumper by junior Jenna Krzemien with the game only 2:32 old to give the Saints a 4-3 lead. The Ducks would keep it close, bringing the score within two after a layup from Stevens’ Dora Enright to make the score 15-13 with St. Lawrence just ahead with 10:46 remaining in the half. But the Saints would extend their lead with a 21-7 run after Enright’s shot, to lead 36-20 at the half.
In the second half, the Saints continued to control the game right from the beginning, with senior Kim Sikule making a shot from the free-throw line after a foul was called on Stevens. Junior Lauren Sischo increased the lead to 20 for the Scarlet and Brown as the Rodman, NY native made a three-pointer with 18:30 left in the game to give the Saints a 40-20 advantage.
Enright would make another layup with 17:58 left on the clock, but Saints’ Katie Palmer brought the lead back up to 20 after making two free throw shots from the line. The Ducks made an intense comeback in the game after a three-pointer from Brittany Fuller with 12:39 remaining, as the Saints watched their lead dwindle from 13 to 2 with only 1:22 left in the game after Stevens had a 22-11 run and Fuller netted her second three-pointer of the afternoon. Senior Jamie Wolff made a three-pointer after an assist from Sischo with :52 left, and Stevens continued to foul the Saints, giving St. Lawrence six free throw attempts, with Sikule making 3-of-4, and Palmer making two, giving the Saints a decisive lead in the final seconds, despite a last-second three-pointer from Stevens’ Fuller to end the game 66-59.
Palmer led the Saints with 19 points, shooting 5-for-9 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free throw line. She also had two assists and six rebounds for St. Lawrence.
Sikule also had an impressive day with 13 points and 9 total rebounds, with one assist and three steals, while Wolff had 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Sischo, who played the entire game for the Saints, shot 3-for-5 from the floor and had seven points, four assists, and four total rebounds.
Krzemien had eight points and two rebounds, while sophomore Brittany Parham shot 3-for-6 for St. Lawrence and had six points in the championship game. Senior Amy Fortener also scored in the Saints, tallying two points for the day.
The Saints, who are now, 2-0, will open at home this season against Potsdam on Tuesday, November 20 th. The tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
