WOLFF REACHES 1,000 POINTS; LEADS SAINTS IN WIN OVER SKIDMORE, 71-37 Jan. 18: Senior guard and co-captain Jamie Wolff tallied her 1,000th career point Friday night as she led the St. Lawrence University women’s basketball team to a 71-37 win over Liberty League opponent Skidmore College in Burkman Gymnasium.
It was no surprise that Wolff (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy), who scored a game-high 22 points against the Thoroughbreds, used her innate ability to sink shots from the three-point range to achieve the milestone, as she made her fifth three-pointer of the game with 4:11 left on the clock. Wolff is the first person since the 2003-2004 season to achieve 1,000 career points.
The game marks the eighth contest Wolff has led the Saints in total points so far this season, as well as her fifth game with more than 20 points.
The first part of the game proved to be slow going for both teams, as they were each plagued with missed shots as they adjusted to each other’s playing techniques. The Saints took an early lead, but Skidmore was able to keep it a one possession game and tied it up three times before the Scarlet and Brown went on a 10-0 run.
The Saints posted two consecutive three-pointers, one from junior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) from the top of the key and the other from senior co-captain Kim Sikule (Westerlo, NY/Berne-Knox Westerlo) to give the Saints an 18-10 lead with 7:30 left before halftime. Palmer followed with a shot from within the paint and junior Jenna Krzemien ( Springville, NY/Springville) made a lay-up to give the Saints a 22-10 advantage. St. Lawrence continued to move the ball well and pour on the pressure as the half ended with the Saints ahead of the Thoroughbreds, 32-15.
In the second half, St. Lawrence improved on almost every part of their game, as they were 52-percent from the field and an outstanding 55-percent from three-point range. The home team was able to use their momentum from the first half to more than double their lead, as they walked off the court with a 71-37 victory.
Palmer also posted impressive numbers, tallying 17 points, six rebounds, four assists and two steals. The forward was 6-for-10 from the floor and made 2 out of 3 shots from beyond the arc.
Sikule also posted in the double digits with 11 points to help the Saints’ effort, while also accumulating three rebounds and three steals. Krzemien had a game-high five steals.
The Saints, now 11-1 overall and 1-0 in the Liberty League, will look to extend their nine-game winning streak on Saturday afternoon as they host the Union Dutchwomen. The game is set to begin at 2:00pm.
