SAINTS POWER PAST CARDINALS, 72-54 Nov. 27: Junior Katie Palmer tallied 23 points for the St. Lawrence University women’s basketball team as she led them to a 72-54 win over the Plattsburgh Cardinals Tuesday night at Memorial Hall in Plattsburgh, NY.
Nearly half of the forward’s points came from free throws, as the Bourne, MA native shot 11-for-15 from the line, seven of those successful shots coming in the first half.
It only took 23 seconds for Palmer to put the Saints up on the board after a Plattsburgh foul sent her to the line. She would score the next eight Saints points before junior Jenna Krzemien would make a jump shot with 14:41 left in the half to give the Saints a slight 10-6 over the Cardinals.
Plattsburgh ’s Vanessa Arthurton would tie the game 10-10 with 11:11 remaining after a layup, but Palmer would be sent back to the line and make two key free throws for St. Lawrence to give them a two-point lead with 9:18 on the clock.
The Cardinals did not let the Saints slip away, as they tied it once again with only 5:06 left in the first, but Wolff would make a shot from the paint to give the lead back to St. Lawrence with 4:46 left and would lead the Saints in a 6-1 run in the remaining minutes of the half, as the Buffalo, NY captain would score four, while Krzemien would end the period with a jumper to give the Saints a 24-17 advantage.
The Saints were able to get a double digit lead in the second half after a good free throw shot by senior captain Kim Sikule with 17:54 on the board, but Plattsburgh went on a 10-2 streak and got the score within two with 15:31 left to play. The Scarlet and Brown then took complete control of the court, scoring the next 13 points in less than four minutes to increase their lead to 15 with 11:50 remaining in the contest. The Saints never looked back as they dominated their way to their fourth win of the 2007-2008 campaign.
Despite shooting 7-for-27 from the field in the first half, the Saints were able to more than double their field goal percentage in the second half, shooting 17-for-30. The team was 20-for-25 in free throws, with Wolff, Parham, and first-year Katie Benzing being perfect from the line.
Palmer led St. Lawrence not only in points, but also in total rebounds as she added eight to the Saints’ total of 35, in comparison to the Cardinals 31 rebounds. She also had a game high of eight steals after only 27 minutes on the court.
In addition to shooting 4-for-4 from the free throw line, Wolff had an exceptional game for the Saints as well, posting a personal season-high 21 points, five assists and five rebounds. She also tallied three steals.
St. Lawrence, now 4-1 overall, will head to Norwich University on Friday to play in the Norwich Tournament this weekend. They will face Bates on the court Friday night at 8:00pm and will be vying for a spot in the tournament’s championship game. Other teams in the tournament include Norwich and Newport News Apprentice.
