SAINTS TALLY SIXTH IN A ROW, DEFEAT BOMBERS 72-60 Dec. 7: The St. Lawrence University women’s basketball team added their eighth win of the season and their sixth consecutive victory as the Saints beat Ithaca College 72-60 in non-league action at Ben Light Gymnasium in Ithaca, NY Friday night.
The Saints’ offense was led by senior co-captain Jamie Wolff, who tallied 22 points, seven assists, three rebounds and one steal, while her classmate and co-captain Kim Sikule posted a double-double with 12 points and game-high 10 rebounds, as well as two steals and one block.
The Scarlet and Brown were the first one the board and got out to an early six point lead after two consecutive lay-ups from Sikule, but Ithaca’s Erika Steele would respond quickly with four points in 45 seconds to bring the Bombers within two. Ithaca’s Lindsay Brown would then put up the first three-pointer of the game to put the Bombers ahead by 1 with 14:40 still to play in the half.
The home court advantage paid off for Ithaca as they were able to go on a 6-0 run until senior Amy Fortener would put it in a bucket with 10:22 on the clock to get the Saints back in the game. The Bombers would hold the lead until Wolff’s lay-up with 7:10 remaining, and the Saints were able to hold a tight lead over Ithaca through the remainder of the first period to walk off the court at half time with a 35-29 lead.
A three-pointer from Wolff, her second of the game, would give the Scarlet and Brown a nine point lead at the beginning of the second half, and the Saints remained relentless as they continued to use their offensive rebounds and their bench to their advantage, driving their lead up by as many as 21 points in the middle of the second half.
The Bombers would attempt to close that lead by as much as possible as the period came to a close, keeping the Saints scoreless in the last 3:29 of the game, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the lead they already had as St. Lawrence came away with a 72-60 victory, their eighth win of the season.
The Scarlet and Brown held a 44-26 advantage in the paint and a decisive 14-2 lead in fast break points while shooting 51 percent from the field, compared to Ithaca’s 43 percent.
Palmer and Junior Jenna Krzemien both put up double digits as Palmer netted 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and a game-high of five steals, while Krzemien posted 12 points with six rebounds.
The game was the last for the Saints in 2007. The team will prepare for a January 4 th contest against SUNY Geneseo to open 2008 on their home court in Burkman Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 6:00pm.
