SAINTS RUN AWAY WITH 8TH STRAIGHT WIN;

TOP HARTWICK, 70-38

Jan. 13: The combination of forced turnovers and 25 points from senior Jamie Wolff that put the St. Lawrence women’s basketball team over the top against non-conference opponent Hartwick College Sunday afternoon, as the Saints increased a seven point lead at the half to 32 on their way to defeating the Hawks 70-38 in Binder Gym in Oneonta, NY.

St. Lawrence only turned the ball over 14 times compared to Hartwick’s 30, but was able to cash in on their opponent’s errors as the Saints scored 36 points off the Hawks’ turnovers.

The Scarlet and Brown led throughout the entire contest with Hartwick staying within two-possessions throughout the beginning of the first half before St. Lawrence’s 17-5 run that gave them a 19-point lead with 5:54 until halftime. The Hawks responded with a 13-2 streak of their own to end the half with only a seven point deficit, 35-27.

It would only take the Saints the first two minutes of the second half to obtain a double-digit lead once again, but the Hawks’ weren’t ready to go away as they continued to chip away at the deficit they faced until Wolff (Buffalo, NY/Nardin Academy) made a lay-up with 9:46 left to permanently give her team a double-digit advantage for the rest of the game.

In the remaining minutes of the contest, the Scarlet and Brown used pressure to contain Hartwick to only four more points as St. Lawrence went on a 25-4 stretch to end the game with a decisive 70-38 victory. It is the seventh game in their 2007-2008 campaign where they have defeated their opponent by more than 20 points.

Most of Wolff’s points came in the second half, as she scored 19 in the last 20 minutes, and was 7-for-10 from the floor, .500 from beyond the arc and perfect from the line. The guard’s 25 points puts her within reach of achieving 1,000 career points before the end of her last season, putting her career total at 978. She also added three assists, four rebounds, and one steal to the Saints’ effort.

Other leaders for the Saints included junior Jenna Krzemien ( Springville, NY/Springville) who tallied 13 points, a game-high eight rebounds, one assist and three steals. Also accumulating eight rebounds was senior co-captain Kim Sikule (Westerlo, NY/Berne-Knox Westerlo), who also posted eight points for the Saints and five steals.

Junior Katie Palmer (Bourne, MA/Falmouth Academy) also had a double-digit game, scoring 11 points for the Saints. The forward also had a game-high seven steals, four rebounds, and one assist.

St. Lawrence, who are now 10-1 overall, will take the momentum eight consecutive wins has given them and will carry it into Liberty League conference action this upcoming weekend on their home court in Burkman Gymnasium. The Saints will face Skidmore on Friday evening, January 18th, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00pm.
