SAINTS TOURNEY CHAMPS AFTER WIN OVER APPRENTICE SCHOOL, 86-54; WOLFF NAMED MVP Dec. 1: Senior captain Jamie Wolff had another exceptional performance for the St. Lawrence women’s basketball team Saturday afternoon as she led the team with 21 points in the Saints’ 86-54 win over the Apprentice School in the championship game of the Norwich Tournament. The Buffalo, NY guard totaled 55 points throughout the weekend, earning her tournament MVP honors.
The Saints were able to bring much of their excitement after last night’s win over Bates College and were more than prepared as they stepped onto the court for Saturday’s game. The team dominated in the first half as the Builders did not appear ready to handle the pressure of an energetic Saints squad, as the Scarlet and Brown were able to break them down defensively and put up 43 points in the first half, compared to the Apprentice School’s 17.
But the second half was much closer as the Builders more than tripled their own score, with the Saints only having a six-point advantage in the second half, 43-37, but their efforts were not enough as after a powerful first half by the Saints, which earned them the championship title.
The Saints shot 52.6% from the field and forced the Builders to turn over the ball 23 times. St. Lawrence was 90% from the free throw line and had 20 assists, compared to the Apprentice School’s 10.
In addition to her game-high 21 points, Wolff also tallied four rebounds, four assists, and one steal, and led the Saints in the first half with four three-pointers. Junior Lauren Sischo was also named to the All-Tournament team after posting eight points against the Builders and tallying four assists, one steal, and three rebounds.
Classmate Katie Palmer came out and had an impressive game for the Saints, netting 18 points, three assists, and five rebounds on Saturday, while senior Amy Fortener also scored points in the double-digits with 12. Fortener also had three rebounds and one steal.
The Saints, now 6-1 overall, will host Albany College of Pharmacy Sunday afternoon in Burkman Gym. The tip-off is set for 2:00pm.
