GAETANO SCORES 16 AS SAINTS BEAT HAMILTON

Jan. 15: Brittany Gaetano scored 16 points and added 3 assists as the Saints beat Hamilton 63-55 today at Burkman Gymnasium. SLU is now 4-6 on the year, and 1-1 in the Liberty League. With the loss, Hamilton falls to 6-5 on the year.

 

The Saints jumped out to an early lead, scoring 10 unanswered points to start the game, and forcing Hamilton to spend the rest of the first half clawing their way back into the game. The Continentals would eventually tie the score at 19 with 5:32 left in the first half. At the half, the score was 36-25 in favor of SLU.

 

The Saints maintained their lead throughout the second half, never letting Hamilton close the gap by more than 9 points. Nora Curly scored 12 points for SLU and added a game high 8 rebounds. First year Jamie Wolff scored 10 points in the win.

 

For Hamilton, Tricia Czeski scored 16 points, and recorded 5 steals. Pumla Sathula scored 15 points, and added 4 rebounds. Melissa Steppe led the Continentals in rebounding with 7, and she scored 9 points.

 

The Saints face off against Plattsburgh this Tuesday night at home at 6:00 pm. Plattsburgh will enter the contest 4-8 on the year.

 

 

SLU LOSES HEARTBREAKER TO WILLIAM SMITH, 54-56

Jan. 14: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team lost to William Smith tonight 54-56 to open Liberty League conference play. With the loss, the Saints move to 3-6 on the year, 0-1 in conference. The Herons stand at 5-4 on the year, 1-0 in the Liberty League.

 

With just 1:35 remaining, and the score 54-50 in favor of SLU, William Smith’s Pria Young hit a three pointer to narrow the margin. Then with just 35 seconds remaining, she hit another 3 to give the Herons the lead and eventually the win. The Saints had two final shots at the end of the game as time was running out, but could not force the bucket.

 

Young led all scorers with 17 points on the night. William Smith’s Stephanie Czajkowski led in rebounds with 8, and she added 10 points. SLU’s Nora Curly scored 13 to lead the Saints, and added 3 rebounds. Jessica Zuk led the Saints in rebounds with 6, and she added 6 points and 4 assists.

 

The Saints will take on Hamilton tomorrow at home at 2:00 pm in their second Liberty League match-up of the year. Hamilton will enter tomorrow's contest with a record of 6-4 on the year.
