UNION SNAPS WIN STREAK IN FINAL SECONDS

Jan. 29: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team lost to Union today in the final seconds 58-56. With the loss, the Saints drop to 9-7 overall, 5-2 in the Liberty League. The Dutchwomen earn a 13-4 overall record, and 6-1 in conference. Union is now is sole custody of first place in the Liberty League; SLU is tied for second with RPI and William Smith.

 

The Saints jumped out to an early lead with baskets from Andrea Muszynski (left) and Nora Curley, but the Dutchwomen took over at 17:33 and had the lead until just over 2 minutes left in the half. The Saints ended the first half on top 30-28, and were shooting 48% from the field, and over 36% from behind the arc. First year Jamie Wolff had hit 3 three-pointers for 9 points in the first half.

For Union, Erika Eisenhut had scored 11 points by the half and had hit three 3 pointers of her own. The Dutchwomen were shooting just under 40% from the field, and 37.5% from three-point range.

 

SLU led the entire second half, and were up by as many as 13, but Union clawed their way back into the game, and Katlyn Cunningham made a lay up to tie the game at 56-56 with 23 seconds left. She then hit a jumper from 2 feet out with just over a second left to give Union the lead at 56-58, and ultimately the win.

 

For the Saints, Muszynski finished with a team high 16 points. Curley finished with 9 on the night, and she added 4 rebounds. Senior Jess Zuk scored 7 points, and also had 4 rebounds.

 

Cunningham led all scorers with 26, and she contributed 6 rebounds. Eisenhut scored 14, and finished with 4 boards.

The Saints will face off against RPI and Vassar next weekend to begin the second half of the Liberty League season. They will play on Friday at 6:00 pm, and Saturday at 2:00 pm.

 

SAINTS MAKE IT 6 IN A ROW

Jan. 28: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team beat Skidmore tonight 64-33 at home in Burkman Gymnasium to make it 6 in row and improve their overall record to 9-6, 5-1 in the Liberty League. With the loss, Skidmore falls to 6-8 on the year, 1-5 in conference.

 

Jess Zuk (left) hit a 3 to start the game for SLU, and Brittany Gaetano quickly followed it up with one of her own to give the Saints a 6-0 lead out of the gate.

 

The Saints were on fire from behind the arc tonight, shooting 50% for the game. They were 44% from the field, and 80% from the free-throw line on the night. At the half, SLU led 31-21, and their lead would only grow from there.

 

Zuk hit 5 three-pointers to earn a game high 15 points on the night, and she added 5 rebounds. Gaetano scored 12 points off of 4 three-pointers, and she contributed 3 steals. Andrea Muszynski also had 12 points on the night, going 4-8 from the field, and 4-4 from the stripe. She also added a game high 6 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kelly O’Brien had 5 blocks on the night to bring her season total to 23, to make her 2nd overall in blocks in the Liberty League.

 

 

For Skidmore, Lisa Mason led her team in points with 12, going 4-8 from the field and sinking 2 three-pointers, and assists with 3.

The Saints will face off against Union tomorrow at home at 2:00 pm.

 

 

SAINTS BEAT CLARKSON, 53-49, FOR FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

Jan. 25: The Golden Knights dropped to 3-13 overall and 0-5 in conference play, while the Saints improved to 8-6 overall with their fifth straight win, moving to 4-1 in the Liberty League.

 

Jessica Zuk (left) led the Saints with 11 points and five rebounds while Meredith Pridgen and Kimberly Sikule each reached double-digits with 10 points.

 

Clarkson's Linda Fernandez finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists and 9 steals, but her all-around effort wasn't quite enough to end St. Lawrence's winning streak as the Saints defeated the Clarkson University Women's Basketball team 53-49 Tuesday evening in a Liberty League contest at Alumni Gym in Potsdam, NY.

 

In the opening half, the Golden Knights started off with a 4-0 run and trailed by no more than two at any point in the half.  Neither team was able to take much control of the play, with Clarkson building their lead to five points late in the half before the Saints ended with a 4-0 run to cut the advantage to a single point at intermission. Fernandez scored four points, grabbed three rebounds, dished out three assists and made four steals in the opening half.

St. Lawrence jumped out to a quick lead in the second half, slipping out to a 35-28 lead with a 12-4 run to start the half. The Golden Knights cut the lead to two on a couple of occasions, but could not score the tying basket for the remainder of the half.

The Saints will be back in action Friday night to face Skidmore at 6:00 pm at home in Burkman Gymnasium. They will play Union at home on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
