SAINTS BEST WILLIAM SMITH, 42-35
Feb. 12: The St. Lawrence women's basketball team beat William Smith today, 42-35, on the road to improve their record to 13-8 overall, 9-3 in conference. The win boosts the Saints back into a first place tie with Union for the conference title.
The loss drops William Smith to 13-7 on the year, 8-3 in the Liberty League. With the loss, the Herons enter a tie for 3rd place in conference with RPI. The Herons grabbed an 8-7 lead on a three-point play by first-year guard Marisa Vespa with 15:23 remaining in the first half. It proved to be William Smith’s final advantage of the contest.
The Saints responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup by junior forward Nora Curley (Madrid-Waddington/Madrid, N.Y.). She finished with a game-high nine points off the bench.
Curley led Saint scorers with 9 points. She added 4 rebounds and two steals on the night. Meredith Pridgen grabbed an impressive 16 rebounds for the Saints. Jess Zuk, Brittany Gaetano, and Jamie Wolff all scored 8 points in the effort.
For the Herons, Tara Brisson, Marisa Vespa, and Paula Foote all scored 7 points. Stephanie Czajkowski added a team high 9 boards. Vespa also grabbed 8 rebounds in the effort.
The Saints will play Union this Friday on the road at 6:00 pm.
SAINTS FALL TO HAMILTON, 69-55
Feb. 11: The St. Lawrence women's basketball team lost to Hamilton tonight on the road, 69-55, to make their overall record 12-8, and their conference record 8-3. With the win, Hamilton improves to 12-8 on the year, 6-4 in the Liberty League.
In a hard fought first half, the Saints took control and led by as many as 10 points. At the half, the score was 28-26 in favor of SLU. The second half, however, would be all Hamilton. The home team took the lead with 18:08 left in the game and would gradually build on their lead to finish the game in the driver's seat by a 14 point margin.
On the night, Meredith Pridgen led Saint scorers with 13 points. She also contributed 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Andrea Muszynski scored 11 points, and grabbed 7 boards. First year Kim Sikule grabbed an impressive 8 rebounds.
For Hamilton, Jessica Barrows led all scorers with 23 points, knocking down 3 three pointers and making 8-8 from the stripe. She also added 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Melissa Steppe scored 13 points, making a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line. She contributed 3 assists and 4 steals in the effort. The Saints will play at William Smith tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 pm.
SAINTS DOMINATE GOLDEN KNIGHTS, 66-33
Feb. 8: The St. Lawrence women’s basketball team beat Clarkson tonight 66-33 at Burkman Gymnasium to improve to 12-7 on the year, 7-2 in the Liberty League. With the win, the Saints enter a tie with Union for first place in the conference. The loss drops Clarkson to 4-17 on the year, 1-9 in conference.
The second half was all St. Lawrence. They entered the half up by 22 points, and they would not lose the lead. The Saints never led by less than 20, and were up by as many as 33, four separate times. First year Jamie Wolff scored 8 points on the night, and added 3 steals and 3 assists. Nora Curley scored 8 points, shot 3-4 from the floor, and 2-2 from the stripe.
Amanda Czop led Clarkson scorers with 8 total points. Sarah Wesner added 9 rebounds for the Golden Knights. The Saints will face Hamilton on Friday night at 6:00 pm. They will then play William Smith who is currently second in the Liberty League on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm. Both games are away.
