Saints Fall in Sectional Final

Host St. Lawrence University fell to the University of Scranton in Saturday's NCAA sectional final contest by a final score of 72-59. The victory sends the Lady Royals to the Final Four for the third time in four years.

Scranton Head Coach Mike Strong has guided his teams to seven NCAA/AIAW Final Four appearances. The Lady Royals won an NCAA Division III championship in back in 1985. Now 26-3, they hope to earn a second title in Danbury, CT next weekend.

The young St. Lawrence squad finishes the season with a school best 24-6 overall record. They are without a senior on their roster. Saint Head Coach G.P. Gromacki led last year's team to a 23-6 overall record and their first-ever NCAA tournament victory. The Saints lost in second round action that season.

Tonight's game marked another first half offensive struggle for the Saints. Despite shooting just 17% from the field, the Saints trailed by only five points at halftime. They kept the Scranton lead to within three points for the first five minutes of regulation, but the Lady Royals went on a 12-3 run sparked by Heather Mohrman's layup and took a 21-9 lead with 8:51 left on the clock.

The Saints then made a 9-0 run, closing the gap to 23-17. Freshmen Megan Dietrichsen and Katie Griffith contributed seven of the nine points in that four minute span. Meredith Eisenhut, who added the other two points on made free throws, netted two more free throws just 47 seconds, after Lady Royals guard Jaime Eilbacher hit a three-point field goal.

Gillian McGovern hit a final first half field goal for the Lady Royals, making it 28-21, but Dietrichsen sank two free throws with 34 seconds remaining in the half to cut the Scranton lead to 28-23.

The Lady Royals maintained no less than a four point lead early in the second half and broke away on a 10-2 run to go up 46-34 with 11:47 left in regulation. Despite several valiant efforts, the Saints could not narrow the gap to within nine points.

Saint guard Cara Barbierri fouled out with 1:39 left to play and Nicole Leary joined her just seconds later.

McGovern led all scorers with 24 points. She also pulled down 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Mohrman finished the game with 19 points, including a nine for 10 outing from the free throw line. Mohrman also collected four steals. Kelly Halpin, who dished out six assists, added 13 points for the Lady Royals.

Saints Rally for Overtime Win

The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team trailed visiting St. John Fisher by six points at halftime of Friday's NCAA sectional semifinal contest, but made a strong second half effort and held on through an overtime period to defeat the Cardinals 67-62. With the win, the Saints advance to the sectional championship game tomorrow at 5:00 p.m., when they will battle the University of Scranton for a right to the final four in Danbury, CT next weekend.

St. John Fisher jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed in the first half of play. At the 12:58 mark, Saint guard Sarah Kloepfer's made free throw tied the game at 11, but the Cardinals answered with six consecutive points to maintain the lead.

The Saints struggled offensively in first half action, shooting just 30% from the field and going one for six from three point range. They did, however, have a perfect half from the free throw line, making seven of seven.

With 1:06 to go in the half, the Cardinals led the Saints 25-15. Saint center Megan Dietrichsen made it 25-17 with a jumper assisted by teammate Meredith Eisenhut. Amy Vaughan then netted the first of two free throws to give St. John Fisher a 26-17 advantage.

Saint guard Cara Barbierri responded with two made free throws and Melissa Sewruk's jumper with nine seconds on the clock made it appear as though the Cardinals would go into halftime with a 28-19 lead. However, Eisenhut put up a shot from far beyond the three point line that fell at the buzzer to cut the Cardinal halftime lead to six.

The Saints went on a 9-2 run early in the second half of regulation, tieing the game at 31-31. Barbierri took a pass from Eisenhut at the 13:40 mark to give the Saints their first lead of regulation. Another jumper by Dietrichsen would make it 35-34 St. Lawrence, but Heather Nolan hit a three-point field goal for the Cardinals to regain the advantage.

It was then an exchange of field goals, until both teams ran into foul trouble. Eisenhut took a seat for the Saints at the 11:40 mark with four fouls. Dietrichsen would join her just two minutes later. For St. John Fisher, both Sewruk and Missy Lock collected their fourth foul with approximately six minutes left in regulation.

Dietrichsen would be the only player to foul out in regulation, exiting the game with 3:25 left to play. At that point, her team led by a score of 53-52.

Amanda Waloven regained the lead for St. John Fisher with her unassisted layup, but Eisenhut hit one of her four three-point field goals to make it 56-54 St. Lawrence. Waloven then added a free throw and a field goal making it 57-56 St. John Fisher, but Jen Janeway netted two free throws for the Saints to again take the lead.

Eisenhut and Nicole Leary each hit one of two free throw attempts and the Saints led 60-57 with 13 seconds remaining on the clock. The Cardinals set up a play during a time out and with two seconds to go in regulation, Barbierri fouled Vaughan to send her to the line for three foul shot attempts. Vaughan sank all three to send the game into overtime.

The Saints put forth a 7-2 effort in the overtime period, with Barbierri scoring five of the Saint seven points. Angie Matusiak scored the only field goal of regulation for St. John Fisher, who finishes the season with a 22-5 record.

St. Lawrence, who shot 65% from the field in second half action, were led by Eisenhut's 19 points. Eisenhut went six for 11 from the field, four for six from three point range and three for four from the free throw line. She also dished out two assists and collected two steals.

Beginning with two made free throws by Eisenhut, the Saints went on a 8-0 run and held on to the lead for good. They went into halftime with a 24-20 advantage and despite several second half efforts by the Herons, the Saints remained poised, hitting clutch field goals as well as free throws to come out with a victory.

WILL HOST NCAA 2ND ROUND GAME MAR. 4

The women's basketball team forced host William Smith into overtime of Saturday's UCAA Championship game and pulled off a 60-57 victory to not only claim the tournament title, but to also end an 80-game home court win streak for the Herons. The streak was the nation's longest active streak at the collegiate level.

The tournament title gave the Saints an automatic NCAA berth and jumped them to the second seed in the East Regional. They will host the winner of the Mar. 1 game between William Smith and Gwynedd-Mercy (PA) at the Burkman Gym on March 4. The time will be announced later this week.

When the Saints defeated William Smith at home back in December, they reached a landmark of beating the Herons for the first time in St. Lawrence women's basketball history. The Herons avenged that loss in January when they handed visiting St. Lawrence a 75-55 loss to extend their home court win streak to 77 straight games.

The Herons jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the first seven minutes of the first-ever UCAA Championship game on Saturday. They forced 18 first half turnovers and led the Saints 24-18 at halftime, despite shooting 30% from the field to St. Lawrence's 40%.

With seven seconds left on the clock, Eisenhut sank a jumper to give the Saints another two point lead. However, Tindall again evened things up by hitting a jumper with just two seconds left to send the game into overtime.

The Saints scored the first eight points of the overtime period and led William Smith 58-53 with 18 seconds left on the clock. At that time, Liz Masten hit the first of two foul shots and Jeanne Marie Vinchiarello grabbed an offensive rebound resulted in a three-point field goal by Brown.

Barbierri pulled through with two clutch free throws for the Saints to make it 60-57 and William Smith's final attempt at a three-point field goal rimmed out.

Free throw shooting proved to be a key factor in the game, as the Saints went to the line 41 times. They hit 30 foul shots as a team, with both Janeway and Barbierri having perfect days at the line. Janeway went seven for seven, while Barbierri hit five of five. Eisenhut, who shot 16 free throws by the end of the game, made 11 for the Saints.
