SAINTS HONOR SENIORS AT ANNUAL BANQUET, ANNOUNCE 2008-09 CAPTAINS May 6: The St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team celebrated their accomplishments from the 2007-2008 season on Friday, May 2nd at the annual awards banquet in Eben Holden. Head coach Chris Wells also announced yesterday that junior Marianna Locke will captain the Saints in 2008-2009, with fellow classmates Alison Domenico, Lisa Batchelor and Carson Duggan will serve as assistant captains.
The 2007-2008 awards banquet, sponsored by “The Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey,” gave family, friends and teammates an opportunity to thank and honor the six members of the Class of 2008, Sabrina Harbec, Chelsea Grills, Kerri Wallace, Sarah Callan, Meaghan Guckian and Annie Guay. Three of the seniors earned team awards, including Harbec who was voted the “Bernie A. McKinnon Most Valuable Player” for the third consecutive season, Guckian who received the Scholar-Athlete Award, and Sarah Callan who earned the “Friends of Saints Hockey 7th Player Award.”
Sophomore Brittaney Maschmeyer, who became one of the Saints’ go-to players on both the power play and penalty kill at the blue line this season, was named the Most Improved Player and first year student Karell Emard’s 24 point season (5g,19a) landed her Rookie of the Year honors.
Finally, Locke and Domenico each stepped to the podium to receive awards as well with Locke taking home the Martha Middendorf Sportsmanship Award and Domenico the Best Defensive Player Award.
Though Friday’s banquet offered a chance to say goodbye to members of the team whose collegiate career’s have come to a close, the focus quickly shifted to 2008-2009 with Coach Wells announcing the first group of captains under his guidance as voted by the players and staff.
Locke will wear the lone “C” next season, following last year’s captains Grills, Guay and Wallace. The Brasher Falls, NY native has 91 career points on 53 goals and 38 assists and is coming off a solid 34-point campaign. However, Wells believes it is her leadership efforts and hard work both on the ice and in the classroom that make her such an excellent selection.
Domenico, Batchelor and Duggan have been staples in the Saints’ line-up since arriving on campus in 2005. Domenico (17g,19a) and Duggan (21g,15a) each had 36-point seasons last year, while Batchelor anchored a very productive and high-energy third line with 22 points (7g,15a). |
