HARBEC NAMED A TOP-10 FINALIST FOR

2008 PATTY KAZMAIER MEMORIAL AWARD

Feb. 26: St. Lawrence University senior forward Sabrina Harbec has been named a top-10 finalist for the 2008 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, which recognizes the top player in NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey.

Harbec has been named in the final ten candidates for the nation’s most prestigious women’s hockey individual award for three consecutive years. The St. Hubert, Quebec native was a top-3 finalist in her sophomore campaign. She is currently ranked ninth in the NCAA (1.47) and second in ECAC Hockey (1.45) in points per game.

St. Lawrence University’s all-time leader in goals (83) assists (131) points (63) and multi-point games (63), Harbec is a two-time All-American and a two-time ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team member. She also helped organize the “Pink Ribbon of Hope” campaign on campus in collaboration with ECAC Hockey’s “Pink at the Rink,” and attended the 2007 NCAA Leadership Conference.

In alphabetical order, the top-10 finalists are Meghan Agosta from Mercyhurst College, Melissa Boal from Wayne State University, Tessa Bonhomme from The Ohio State University, Caitlin Cahow from Harvard University, Sam Faber from the University of New Hampshire, Martine Garland from the University of New Hampshire, Harbec, Kim Martin from the University of Minnesota Duluth, Gigi Marvin from the University of Minnesota and Sarah Vaillancourt from Harvard University.

The top-10 class represents all four women’s college conferences in College Hockey America, ECAC Hockey, Hockey East and the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The award selection process began at the end of January, when NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey coaches were asked to nominate players for the award. Nominated players were then placed on an official ballot, which was sent back to the coaches to vote for the top-10 finalists. The independent accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP tabulated the ballots.

The top three finalists, including the recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, are chosen by a 13-member selection committee comprised of NCAA Division I women’s ice hockey coaches, representatives of the print and broadcast media and a representative of USA Hockey, the National Governing Body for the sport of ice hockey in the United States.

The three finalists for this year’s award will be announced March 12.
