Oct. 17: Senior Jessica Moffat and freshman Carson Duggan were honored by the ECACHL Monday afternoon. Moffat was named the league’s Goalie of the Week, while Duggan was named the Rookie of the Week.
Duggan scored her first collegiate goal just 21 seconds into Saturday’s game as the No.1 Saints (3-0-0) shut out Wayne State 4-0 Saturday afternoon. She went on to score two more over the next 20 minutes and 16 seconds to net her first career hat trick. She leads the team in goals (3) and ranks tied for third in points (3).
Moffat, a Moose Creek, Ont. native, stopped 37 of 39 shots she faced from the Warriors last weekend. In the 3-2 win on Friday, Moffat stopped 19 of 21 shots, including five on the power-play. For the season, she posts a 1.00 GAA and a .945 SV% with an undefeated record at 3-0-0. In the Saints 4-0 win at Wayne State on Saturday, Moffat stopped all 18 shots (including seven power-play shots) in the game for her ninth career shutout and fourth at St. Lawrence.
The Saints return to action this weekend as they travel north to Montreal , Que. to face the McGill Martlets in their second exhibition game of the season. The puck is set to drop Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Montreal .
DUGGAN NETS HAT TRICK, SAINTS BLANK WARRIORS 4-0
Duggan’s goal put the Saints on the board early, assisted by freshman Marianna Locke and sophomore Sabrina Harbec. It would prove to be the game-winner. She scored her second of the game at 11:56 with assists from Harbec and senior captain Tracy Muzerall to give St. Lawrence a 2-0 lead. Duggan came out firing to start the second period, completing the hat trick just 37 seconds into the period. On the goal, Harbec picked up her third assist of the day, with senior captain Kate Michael also tallying an assist. Twenty-four seconds later, junior Crystal Connors scored her second on the weekend to push the Saints lead to 4-0.
Moffat, backed by the Saints defense, held off the Warriors for the final half of the game to earn the shut out. St. Lawrence was whistled for nine penalties in the game and 16 in the series, but did not surrender a power play goal over the weekend. Wayne State was called for four penalties in the game and just six in the series. Warriors’ netminder Valery Turcotte posted 21 saves in the loss, falling to 0-3-1 on the season.
The Saints will travel to Montreal, Que. to face the McGill Martlets in an exhibition game Friday, Oct. 21. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 p.m.
SAINTS SCORE THREE IN SECOND TO TOP WARRIORS 3-2
Detroit, Mich.: Sophomore defenseman Annie Guay scored her first goal of the season at 11:30 in the second to lead the No.1 Saints (2-0-0) over the Wayne State Warriors (0-2-1) Friday night. Senior Jessica Moffat posted 19 saves in net for her second win of the season.
Wayne State struck first when Ashley King scored at 17:39 in the first period. Melissa Boal picked up an assist on the goal. The Saints responded with a three goal outing in the second period. Sophomore Sabrina Harbec scored her first of the season on a three-on-one rush just 3:34 into the second to knot the score at 1-1. Freshman Marianna Locke and sophomore Kerri Wallace assisted on the goal. Junior Crystal Connors, assisted by senior Emilie Berlinguette, scored at 10:52 to push the Saints on top 2-1. Thirty-eight seconds later, Guay scored with assists from junior Elisabeth Pahler and freshman Lisa Batchelor.
The Warriors cut the lead to 3-2 with a goal from Lindsay DiPietro at 14:47 in the third period. Wayne State pulled goalie Valery Turcotte late in the game, but the Saints held off the Warriors attack. Turcotte finished with 17 saves in the loss for Wayne State.
Wayne State held the edge in shots 21-20 over St. Lawrence. The Saints were whistled for seven penalties while the Warriors were whistled for just two. St. Lawrence and Wayne State will meet on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the City Sports Center in Detroit for the rematch.
