SAINTS MARCH BACK TO No. 1

Dec. 12: The St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey team (14-1-2, 5-1-2) regained the No.1 spot in the USCHO.com poll Monday afternoon. The Saints earned six of 15 first-place votes and 135 points to earn the top spot. The Saints had dropped to No.2 after splitting with Clarkson two weeks ago. This past weekend, St. Lawrence swept the Union Dutchwomen to move into a tie for first place in the ECAC Hockey League.

The Saints are idle for the winter holidays as the Union series was the final of the fall semester. St. Lawrence will return to action January 6-7 at Appleton Arena when the St. Cloud State Huskies come to Canton, N.Y.

Minnesota Duluth dropped from No.1 to No.4 after tying and losing to Wisconsin. New Hampshire moved up to No.2 and Wisconsin moved to No.3. The only other movement in the poll came at No.8 and No.10 as Clarkson and Minnesota State swapped places. Clarkson dropped to No.10 after being swept on the road to unranked Niagara. Minnesota State moved up to No.8 after earning one point from Minnesota (tie, loss).

Earlier on Monday, sophomore forward Sabrina Harbec and freshman forward Carson Duggan were honored by the ECACHL. Harbec was named the Player of the Week and Duggan was named the Rookie of the Week.

 

 

HARBEC, DUGGAN EARN ECACHL HONORS

 

Dec. 12: Sabrina Harbec was named ECAC Hockey League Women’s Player of the Week and first year Carson Duggan was the ECACHL Women’s Rookie of the Week after their performances in a 10-0, 7-0 ECACHL sweep of Union College last weekend.

 

Harbec was named Player of the Week for the fourth time this season after an eight point weekend against Union. She had two goals and an assist in the 10-0 win and a goal and four assists in the 7-0 victory. She assisted on both game winning goals in the series and matched a career high with the four assists and five points on Saturday.

 

Harbec leads the nation with 20 assists and ranked second in the nation in points with 31.

 

Duggan scored six goals in two games to earn her second Rookie of the Week award of the year. She had two goals on Friday including the game winner and matched a SLU record with four goals on Saturday and scored the game winner for the second straight game. She had a plus-eight rating for the weekend.

 

Duggan leads the nation in goal scoring in women’s hockey with 17 for the year.

 

 

 

DUGGAN’S FOUR LEADS SAINTS PAST

UNION 7-0

 

Dec. 10: Freshman forward Carson Duggan scored a record-tying four goals to lead the No.2 Saints (14-1-2, 5-1-2) to a 7-0 win over Union (2-10-0, 0-8-0) Saturday afternoon. With the win, St. Lawrence moves into a tie with Clarkson for first place in the ECAC Hockey League. Duggan is just five goals shy of tying the freshman goal record of 22.

 

Duggan opened the scoring just 1:12 into the game off a nifty pass from sophomore forward Sabrina Harbec. Harbec tied a career high with five points with one goal and four assists in the game. Duggan and Harbec connected again at 3:48 in the first, as the Saints took a 2-0 lead. Freshman forward Lisa Batchelor also assisted on the goal. Harbec got in on the scoring at 17:14 in the opening period, with an assist from sophomore defenseman Kerri Wallace.

 

Duggan scored at 5:46 into the second period to complete her second career hat trick. Harbec and senior defenseman Kate Michael picked up the assists. Duggan scored her final goal of the afternoon and her NCAA-leading 17 th goal of the season just 2:03 into the final period. The goal tied the Saints single-game record of four held by Gina Kingsbury ’04, Trisha Powers ’03, and Kelly Usmail ’98.

 

Junior Casey Hughes tallied her first power play goal of the season at 9:01 capitalizing on a high sticking penalty on Maeve Kehoe. Freshman Alison Domenico closed out the scoring with her seventh of the season at 11:49 in the third.

 

Sophomore Meaghan Guckian played the first 29:24 of the game in net for the Saints. She stopped all eight shots she faced to improve to 4-1-2 on the season. Junior Kaitlin Branon played the rest of the game, making four saves.

 

This weekend’s series with Union wrapped up the first semester for the Saints. St. Lawrence will return to action on Friday, Jan. 6 against the St. Cloud State Huskies. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena.

 

 

SAINTS TOP DUTCHWOMEN 10-0

 

Dec. 9: The No.2 St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey team ( 13-1-2, 4-1-2) got back to its winning ways with a 10-0 win over Union ( 2-9-0, 0-7-0) in ECACHL action at Appleton Arena Friday night. Freshman Carson Duggan, sophomore Sabrina Harbec, and senior Emilie Berlinguette each had two goals for the Saints.

 

Duggan opened the scoring for the Saints just 1:19 into the first period cashing in on a power play opportunity. Sophomore defenseman Kerri Wallace, a transfer from Minnesota State, scored her first goal as a Saint at 12:10 in the first to push St. Lawrence’s lead to 2-0.

 

The Saints came out firing in the second, scoring a season high six goals to extend their lead to 8-0. Harbec started the scoring just 1:10 into the period, followed by a short-handed tally by Berlinguette at 6:27. Junior Elisabeth Pahler, returning after missing four games due to injury, scored her first of the season at 7:51. Berlinguette scored her second short-handed goal of the game at 10:26. Junior Julia Palmateer got in on the action at 12:48, scoring the first of her career. Duggan closed out the scoring in the period, with her second of the day, at 14:31.

 

St. Lawrence eased off in the third, with goals from Harbec and junior Crystal Connors. Senior Jessica Moffat played the first 30:26 in net for the Saints, making two saves to earn her 10 th win of the season. Junior Kaitlin Branon played the final 29:34 of the game and stopped all 13 shots she faced.

 

Alex Kirbel played the first 30:26 of the game for Union. She finished with 24 saves on 30 shots in the loss. Amanda Hanson checked in and played 29:34. She made 22 saves on 26 shots.

 

The Saints and the Dutchwomen will face-off again Saturday afternoon at Appleton. The puck is set to drop at 4:00 p.m. This marks the final game for the Saints in 2005, they will return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 6 against the St. Cloud State Huskies.
