2005-2006 Archives HUSKIES EDGE SAINTS IN OVERTIME
Jan. 7: St. Lawrence and St. Cloud State went into overtime for the second straight day and once again it ended with players spilling onto the ice in celebration – this time for St. Cloud State. Denelle Maguet scored with 1:09 to play in the overtime period to give the Huskies a 4-3 win over the Saints at Appleton Arena Saturday afternoon. It was just the second loss of the season for the Saints and the first at home.
Ashely Stewart started the scoring for St. Cloud at 16:26 in the first. The Huskies went on the power play at 14:31 when senior Emilie Berlinguette was whistled for tripping. Stewart banged home a pass from Sammy Nixon to give St. Cloud the lead.
The Saints would answer at 4:29 in the second after an interference call on St. Cloud’s Brita Schroeder. Senior Laurie Ross fired a shot from the point that was tipped by junior Crystal Connors on the near post. The puck slid across to Berlinguette on the far post who buried it in the back of the St. Cloud net.
The Huskies took the lead again just 1:05 into the third period. Kristy Oonincx put home a pass from Hailey Clarkson putting the Huskies up 2-1. Four and a half minutes later, freshman Lisa Batchelor got her fourth of the season, knotting the score at 2-2. Freshman Carson Duggan wristed a shot from the near post and Batchelor banged home the rebound.
With 2:29 to play in the period, St. Cloud took a 3-2 when Oonincx scored her second of the afternoon. Clarkson carried the puck down the right board and centered the puck to Oonincx in the crease, who potted it in the net. Once again, the Saints would answer. Senior Kate Michael rifled a shot from the point with 1:22 to play that eluded Huskies goalie Kendall Newell and tied the game.
Once again the two teams needed an extra period to decide the game. Oonincx looked to put the game away with 1:22 to go when she got a breakaway. But for the third time in the game, Saints goalie Jessica Moffat got down and stoned Oonincx with her left leg. Just 13 seconds later Maguet would score the gamewinner off a rebound.
Moffat finished with 31 saves in her first loss since March 25, 2005. Newell finished with 25 saves, improving to 4-7-1 on the season.
The Saints continue their eight-game homestand next weekend. St. Lawrence will face the Yale Bulldogs on Friday, January 13 at 7:00 p.m. and the Brown Bears Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
PAHLER SCORES TWO AS NO.1 SAINTS TOP HUSKIES IN OT
Jan. 6: Junior Elisabeth Pahler scored two goals, with the second coming 2:34 into overtime, to lead the No.1 St. Lawrence University Women’s Hockey team (15-1-2, 5-1-2) to a 3-2 win over St. Cloud State (7-11-1, 5-8-1). The Saints remain unbeaten at home at 8-0-0 on the season.
Senior forward Emilie Berlinguette gave the Saints an early 1-0 lead when she scored just 46 seconds into the game. She collected the puck from senior defenseman Laurie Ross and skated through the neutral zone and into the Huskies zone. She beat a St. Cloud defender and then tucked the puck behind Lauri St. Jacques on her glove-side for her seventh of the season.
St. Cloud State answered at 13:12 in the period, knotting the score at 1-1. Kristy Oonincx snuck a rebound past sophomore goalie Meaghan Guckian to tie the game.
Midway through the second Pahler gave St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead. St. Jacques pulled in the puck as it rebounded off the boards, but she then dropped the puck. Pahler pounced on the loose puck and buried it in the back of the Huskies net for her second of the season.
The Huskies would answer again, with 6:11 to play in the third period. Oonincx, from behind the Saints net, sent the puck out to Hailey Clarkson in the slot. Clarkson one-timed the puck into the net, knotting the game at 2-2. Neither team was able to find the net again before the end of the period, sending the game into overtime, the fourth this season for St. Lawrence.
With just over two minutes gone in the overtime period, the Saints were banging on the doorstep. Pahler fired off a shot, setting off a flurry in front of the Huskies net. Pahler was able to find the puck and put back her rebound, sending the Saints players pouring onto the ice to celebrate.
Guckian finished with 18 saves to improve to 5-1-2 on the season. St. Jacques made 35 saves, falling to 3-7-1 on the season. The teams will meet in the rematch Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. The puck is set to drop at 4:00 p.m.
