2005-2006 Archives BERLINGUETTE NETS TWO AS #1 SAINTS SHUTOUT NORTHEASTERN 3-0
Nov. 6: Senior forward Emilie Berlinguette scored two goals to lead the No.1 St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey team (7-0-0, 0-0-0) to a 3-0 shutout over Northeastern (1-8-1, 1-3-1) Sunday afternoon at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. Sophomore netminder Meaghan Guckian stopped all 12 shots she faced to post her first shutout of the season, and fifth of her career. St. Lawrence extend its best start in school history this afternoon in the win, moving to 7-0-0.
Freshman Lisa Batchelor opened the scoring with her second of the weekend at 12:29 in the first period. She took a pass from sophomore Annie Guay and lifted the puck top shelf over Huskies goalie Marisa Hourihan. Just 11 seconds later, Berlinguette tallied her first of the afternoon, when she wristed a shot past Hourihan from the goalie’s right side. The goal was the 50th of her career.
The teams went scoreless in the second as the Huskies came out a harder after the intermission, but were unable to capitalize. Hourihan made 18 saves in the period to keep the score at 2-0. Berlinguette struck at 8:19 in the third when she stole the puck from a Huskie defender down in the right corner. She skated in all alone on Hourihan and lifted the puck over her to give the Saints a 3-0 lead.
St. Lawrence dominated in the Northeastern zone, pelting Hourihan with 57 shots in the game, including 22 in the third period. Hourihan finished with 54 saves in the loss.
St. Lawrence returns to the road next weekend as they begin ECAC Hockey League play. The Saints face No.6 Dartmouth on Saturday, Nov. 12 in Hanover, N.H. at 2:00 p.m. St. Lawrence will then face No.7 Harvard in Cambridge, Mass. Sunday, Nov. 13 at 2:00 p.m.
SAINTS TURN BACK PROVIDENCE 6-1 IN WOMEN’S HOCKEY
Nov. 5: St. Lawrence University’s top-ranked women’s ice hockey team excelled on special teams in its home opener Saturday afternoon and defeated eighth-ranked Providence College 6-1 for its sixth straight victory.
The Saints scored two power play goals in seven tries and killed all but one Providence power play including a major and nearly six minutes of five-on-three power play time for the Friars. St. Lawrence, ranked number one in the nation for the sixth consecutive week, will play Northeastern Saturday at 2 p.m. at Appleton Arena.
Providence, which had a four-game unbeaten streak snapped and is now 3-2-1, will play at Clarkson Sunday afternoon. “We did an outstanding job on the penalty kill in that we were able to take away a lot of their shooting lanes and were also able to block a lot of shots,” said Saint coach Paul Flanagan. “Jess Moffat also made some good saves in key situations and your goalie is always a key to the penalty kill.”
The Saints opened the scoring just 1:17 into the game as freshman Lisa Batchelor scored her first collegiate goal on a rebound of an initial shot by Sabrina Harbec. It went to 2-0 at 9:10 of the second as Crystal Connors poked a rebound of a shot by Emilie Berlinguette past Providence goalie Jana Budgen.
The Saints outshot Providence 11-10 in the first period with six of the Friar shots coming on a trio of early power plays. The Saints continued their domination in the second period, outshooting Providence 12-1 in the first nine minutes and adding a pair of goals for a 4-0 lead.
Kate Michael got the first on a power play shot from the short slot at 6:38 and freshman Carson Duggan scored her sixth of the year at 8:13 as she cut across the goal mouth and backhanded a shot past Budgen. Providence finally got a puck past Saint goalie Jess Moffat at the 17:29 mark as Kristin Gigliotti scored her fourth of the year on a power play shot that deflected off the post.
The Saints killed off a major penalty and 1:42 of five-on-three power play, allowing just one shot in the entire sequence to start the third period and put the game away with two goals in the final seven minutes. Annie Guay scored on a power play blast from the point at 13:06 and Casey Hughes greeted Providence backup goalie Stacey Scott with her first goal of the year at 16:05.
“We scored some good goals through hard work in front,” Flanagan added. “People worked through traffic to get to rebounds and it paid off.”
Bugden finished with 34 saves and Scott added eight for Providence while Moffat had 23 for the Saints.
