DOMENICO NAMED USCHO OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Oct. 12: Freshman Alison Domenico started her career with a bang, leading the Saints to a 3-1 road win over the No.3 Gophers Saturday. For her effort, she was named the USCHO.com Offensive Player of the Week Tuesday night.
A St. Lawrence team stacked with veterans was buoyed by the performance of a rookie in its first defense of its No. 1 ranking. In a 3-1 victory at No. 3 Minnesota, the two-time defending NCAA champions, Saints freshman Alison Domenico scored the game's first two goals and assisted on a crucial third goal with five seconds left in the second period. The Nepean, Ont. native, who was the No. 2 scorer on her NWHL team as a high schooler, showed on Saturday that she might be just as prolific in the college game.
SAINTS REMAIN AT NO.1
Oct. 11: The St. Lawrence University Women's Hockey team (1-0-0) remained at top the national polls this week. The Saints were ranked No.1 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll and tied for No.1 in the USCHO.com preseason poll.
After a 3-1 road win over No.3 Minnesota, the two-time NCAA defending champion, last Saturday, the Saints remained alone at the top of both national polls. In the USCHO.com poll released Monday, St. Lawrence received 13 of 15 first place votes and 147 points. Wisconsin dropped to No.2 in the polls after a split with then-No.4 Minnesota-Duluth. Minnesota dropped to No.4, while the UMD Bulldogs moved up to No.3. New Hampshire rounds out the top five.
St. Lawrence heads west again this weekend as they travel to Detroit, Mich. to face the Wayne State Warriors (0-1-1). Game time from the City Sports Arena is set for 7:00 p.m. Friday night. On Saturday the two teams will meet at 4:00 p.m.
DOMENICO SCORES TWO TO LEAD SAINTS PAST GOPHERS
Oct. 8: Freshman Alison Domenico had a great start to her college career, scoring two goals and picking up an assist, as the No.1 St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey team (1-0-0) opened their season with a 3-1 win over No.3 Minnesota ( 1-1-0). Senior Jessica Moffat posted 15 saves in net for her first win of the season, as St. Lawrence out shot the two-time NCAA defending champion Gophers 30-16. The loss marked the first time the Gophers lost at home since February of 2004.
The Saints attacked early, scoring a power-play goal at 10:34 of the first period. Domenico scored on a five-on-three attempt, with assists from junior Chelsea Grills and sophomore Annie Guay. The lead held into the first intermission and continued until 15:30 of the second. Domenico scored an even-strength goal with freshman Marianna Locke assisting on the play.
Trailing, 2-0, the Gophers got on the board at 17:10 of the second period to cut the Saints' lead in half. Bobbi Ross scored with Andrea Nichols and Erica McKenzie assisting on the play. McKenzie started the play passing it to Nichols, who was camped out at the hash mark. Nichols found Ross and she shot the puck far side for a power play goal.
However, St. Lawrence came storming back, when senior Emilie Berlinguette scored a power-play goal at 19:55 of the second period, with assists from sophomore Kerri Wallace and Domenico. It was the second power-play given up by the Gophers in the game.
Brittony Chartier started in net for Minnesota, dropping her first contest of her Gopher career. The Saints were 2-of-5 on the power play, while taking eight penalties. The Gophers were 1-of-5 with the extra skater, while taking six penalties.
SAINTS OPEN WITH WIN AT EASTON SHOOTOUT Oct. 7: The No.1 St. Lawrence Women’s Hockey team opened at the Easton Shoot-out in Minneapolis, Minn. with a 4-2 win over the University of Alberta Friday night. Senior captain Kate Michael led the Saints with two power-play goals.
