Apr. 11: Senior captain Rebecca Russell was named the Bernie McKinnon Most Valuable Player as the St.Lawrence women's hockey team was honored at the annual year-end banquet on Saturday night.

The Clarenville, Newfoundland was a top-10 finalist for the 2005 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award and an ECACHL First-Team honoree. As the team’s captain, she led the Saints in points (70), goals (32), assists (38), power-play goals (12) and is tied with six game-winning strikes. Against Cornell on February 26, she broke the Saints single-season goals, assists and points record. With a hat-trick in the Saints 5-1 win over Dartmouth in the NCAA Consolation Game, Russell finished her career one goal shy of tying Caroline Trudeau’s (‘01) record 77 career goals. In all, Russell broke 14 records in her career at St. Lawrence.

Sophomore Chelsea Grills was awarded the second-annual Lauren Matura Perseverence Award. This award is presented to the Saints player who, faced with a significant personal challenge, performed with distinction and conducted herself with grace, thereby bringing credit to herself and the team. RUSSELL’S FIVE POINTS LEADS SAINTS TO 5-1 WIN OVER DARTMOUTH

Durham, N.H.: The Saints Women’s Hockey Team (28-8-5, 14-3-3) was looking to end their season on a winning note as they faced Dartmouth (27-8-10, 16-4-0) in the 2005 NCAA Third-Place Game. With a 5-1 win over the Big Green Sunday afternoon, St. Lawrence finished third at the NCAA Frozen Four for the second consecutive season and tied a school record with 28 wins. The win also marked the 100th of the Saints senior class, the most ever wins for a class. The seniors finished their careers with a record of 100-37-14 (.708). Senior captain Rebecca Russell tied a Frozen Four record with five points (3g, 2a) in the game. She is also just the fifth player to record a hat trick in the Frozen Four.

Just five minutes in to the opening period, freshman netminder Meaghan Guckian came up with a huge save to keep the Big Green off the scoreboard. Gillian Apps skated in all alone on Guckian as Apps tried to beat her stick-side, but Guckian came up with the save. Russell gave the Saints a 1-0 lead midway through the first period when she scored her 30th goal of the season. Junior assistant captain Tracy Muzerall, from behind the Saints net, passed the puck out to Russell. She pulled in the pass and skated up the ice and through the Dartmouth defense. From the right face-off circle, Russell wristed a shot that went top-shelf over Kate Lane on her glove-side.

Sophomore Kim Kodatsky pushed the Saints lead to 2-0 with just 1:50 to play in the opening period. Sophomore Crystal Connors pulled in a pass from Russell in the neutral zone and skated in on the Big Green net. She fired a shot from just outside the crease and Lane deflected the shot, but the puck skidded across the crease. Laying on the ice and with Lane down, Kodatsky poked the puck into the open net for her fifth of the season.

Apps cut the lead to 2-1 as time expired in the second period. Carrie Thompson sent her the puck at the Saints blue line and she skated in on a breakaway. As she closed in on the net, she held the puck and forced Guckian down and then lifted the puck over her glove-side to end Guckian’s bid at a shutout. Just one minute into the final period, freshman Sabrina Harbec tried to extend St. Lawrence’s lead as she broke in on the Dartmouth net with a Big Green defenseman. She made a move that beat the defenseman and then tried to tuck the puck between the post and Lane’s skate but hit the post.

Russell scored her second of the game when Katie Weatherston went to the penalty box for cross-checking at 3:32 in the final stanza. Junior Emilie Berlinguette fed a pass to Harbec along the boards behind the Dartmouth red line. Harbec sent the puck out to Russell who wristed the shot over Lane’s stick-side shoulder at 4:14 for her 11th power-play goal of the season. Harbec pushed the lead to 4-1 when she scored at 8:54 after Alana BreMiller went to the penalty box for hooking at 8:43. Russell fired a shot on the Big Green net and Lane deflected the shot but it ricocheted off Berlinguette’s skate where Harbec picked it up in the slot and fired it over Lane for her 16th of the season. Russell completed her hat trick at 18:19 in the third when she scored her 12th power-play goal of the season.

Notes: The Saints played a school record 41 games this season, excluding a January 5 exhibition game against McGill. Russell, the school’s all-time points and assists leader finished her career with 178 points on 76 goals and 102 assists. She eclipsed the career points mark by 26 points and the career assists mark 23. She finished one shy of tying Caroline Trudeau’s (’01) record of 77 career goals. In the last two seasons, the Saints are 37-1-1 when Russell scores. Senior assistant captain Whitney Carbone, the school’s all-time career games played leader, played in 148 games in her four seasons.

SAINTS FALL IN NCAA SEMI-FINALS 4-1

Durham, N.H., Mar 25: In their second consecutive NCAA Frozen Four, the Saints (27-8-5) were hoping to reverse a trend when they faced the Harvard Crimson (26-6-3) in the 2005 NCAA Semi-finals Friday afternoon. However it was not to be as St. Lawrence fell to Harvard 4-1 at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. Heading into the game, the Saints were winless in their last 10 meetings (0-8-2).

Harvard struck first when Nicole Corriero scored her 59th goal of the season at 6:29 in the first period. Junior Laurie Ross went to the Saints penalty box at 5:27 for tripping putting the Crimson on the power play. From the point, Julie Chu took a pass from Sarah Vaillancourt and sent the puck down to Corriero who was sitting on the back post. Corriero one-timed the puck into the goal for the early 1-0 lead. Seconds before Ashley Banfield nearly scored for the Crimson on a similar play, but St. Lawrence netminder Jess Moffat came up with two big saves.

Skating four-on-four with Ross and the Crimson’s Ashley Banfield in their respective penalty boxes, Harvard struck again. Lindsay Weaver wristed a shot from the point and an on-rushing Vaillancourt one-timed the puck past Moffat to give Harvard a 2-0 lead at 10:06 in the period.

The Saints responded to start the second with a power-play goal of their own. Liza Solley went to the Crimson penalty box for body checking at 18:45 in the first. St. Lawrence took the ice to start the second with 45 seconds of power play. At the blue line, junior Kate Michael stopped a Crimson attempt to clear the zone and sent the puck to senior captain Rebecca Russell who fired a shot on the Harvard net. Crimson netminder Ali Boe made the initial save, but sophomore Chelsea Grills was there to clean up the rebound and cut the Harvard lead to 2-1 just 31 seconds into the second period with her 20th goal of the season. Russell, the Saints all-time career assist leader, picked up her 100th career assist on the goal.

The teams spent over seven minutes to start the second in the Harvard defensive zone as the Saints pounded the Crimson net. But at 7:34, Russell was sent to the penalty box for roughing after running into Boe. Harvard responded with their third power-play goal of the game at 8:21. Moffat stopped a Chu shot but Vaillancourt was on the back door and fired the loose puck into the Saints net to push the Crimson lead back to 3-1.

Harvard extended its lead to 4-1 when Vaillancourt scored with 3:09 remaining in the period on a Crimson five-on-three. Seconds prior to the goal, Moffat made a tremendous pad save on Corriero who was waiting back door. With 2:40 remaining in the period, Moffat made yet another outstanding save for the Saints on Vaillancourt. Corriero sent a the puck to Vaillancourt who was all alone in front of the Saints net but Moffat denied her.

With a five-on-four advantage, junior Emilie Berlinguette along the boards, found senior Christin Powers all alone in front. Powers one-timed the puck just wide and was then taken down by Harvard’s Carrie Schroyer. Schroyer was sent to the box for cross-checking and the Saints were given a five-on-three advantage for 1:45. That changed to a four-on-three at 13:16 when freshman Annie Guay was sent to the penalty box for obstruction-holding. Twenty seconds later, the Saints appeared to capitalize when sophomore Abbie Bullard fired a slap-shot from the point that ricocheted off the crossbar and down. The official ruled it a goal, but after reviewing the video, it was waved off.

The Saints will face the loser of the Minnesota-Dartmouth game on Sunday, March 25 at 12:30 in the third place game. The Gophers and the Big Green face off in the second semi-final game at 8:00 p.m. Friday night. Fans can listen to the game on 92.7 FM “The Border” or on USCHO.com.

SAINTS WIN IN OVERTIME, HEADED FOR FROZEN FOUR

Mar. 18, Superior, Wis.: At Wessman Arena on the campus of Wisconsin-Superior, in one of the first-ever NCAA Women’s Quarterfinal games, it took nearly 67 minutes to decide the winner. The Saints (27-7-5) prevailed 3-2 over the No.2 seed Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs (26-6-2) in overtime. Junior forward Emilie Berlinguette scored two goals, including the overtime winner to send St. Lawrence to their second consecutive NCAA Frozen Four.

Senior captain Rebecca Russell gave the Saints a quick 1-0 lead just 3:42 into the opening period. Sophomore Crystal Connors collected the puck in the right face-off zone and skated in on the Bulldogs net. She dropped the puck back to Russell who was trailing. Russell pulled in the pass and just snuck the puck beneath the pads of UMD netminder Riitta Schaublin for her 29th goal of the season.

“I thought it was a pretty good hockey game,” said Head Coach Paul Flanagan. “I thought it was very well played by both teams.”

“It was a gutsy performance from our team, coming off a disappointing loss last weekend in the ECACHL Semi-finals,” Flanagan said.

Minnesota-Duluth answered when senior Whitney Carbone went to the penalty box for roughing at 15:43 in the first. Caroline Ouellette fired a shot from the point after pulling in a pass from Nora Tallus. Noemie Marin, sitting on the left post, tipped the puck over Jess Moffat into the net to knot the score with 3:34 to play in the opening period.Berlinguette scored her 21st of the season on a delayed penalty call. After the expiration of a Saints penalty, Connors picked up a loss puck in the neutral zone and skated in along the near boards. She centered the puck out to Berlinguette in the slot, who then beat Schaublin to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 lead at 4:26 in the second period.

Once again UMD answered late in the period. Jessica Koizumi won a face-off in the St. Lawrence zone. Ouellette picked up the puck and skated around in front of the Saints net and beat Moffat stick-side to knot the score at 2-2 with 5:39 to play in the second period.

With a scoreless third period, the Saints and the Bulldogs were headed to overtime. Berlinguette and senior Christin Powers had achance to win the game for the Saints five minutes into the extra period. The pair skated in on a two-on-one and Powers took the shot. Schaublin made the save but the puck squirted across the crease but Berlinguette was unable to get her stick on it. Less than two minutes later, at 6:11, Berlinguette scored her second of the game to send the Saints to New Hampshire for the 2005 Frozen Four.

Moffat posted a career-high 42 saves in net for her 11th win of the season. Schabulin posted 32 in the loss for UMD. Penalties were pretty even, with four called on the Bulldogs and five called on the Saints. St. Lawrence will face the winner of the Harvard-Mercyhurst game in the NCAA Semi-finals at the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. on Friday, March 25. The Saints fell to the No.2 seed Harvard Crimson 2-1, but defeated No.4 Dartmouth 2-1 in the Third-Place game. In 2001, St. Lawrence was the fourth seed and upset the Big Green, the No.1 seed, 3-1 in the first-ever NCAA Women’s Frozen Four game. SAINTS FALL IN SEMIFINALS 4-2 TO DARTMOUTH

March 12, Schenectady, N.Y. : In the 2005 ECAC Hockey League Semi-finals, the Saints (26- 7-5) finally fell to the Dartmouth Big Green (26-5-0) in the postseason. In a repeat of the 2004 ECACHL Semi-final game, the No.3 St. Lawrence Saints faced the No.2 Dartmouth Big Green. This time though it was Dartmouth who prevailed in a 4-2 game at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. Last season St. Lawrence twice defeated Dartmouth in the postseason, once in the ECACHL Semi-finals and again in the NCAA Frozen Four Third-Place game.

Both goalies made spectacular saves to keep their opponents scoreless. After 36 minutes of scoreless hockey, senior Christin Powers finally put the Saints on the board with her eighth goal of the season. Powers collected a pass from junior Emilie Berlinguette in the neutral zone and skated into the Dartmouth zone. Powers fired a wrist shot from the point that beat Christine Capuano over her stick-side shoulder to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead. The assist was Berlinguette’s 23rd of the season and the 100th of her career.

Dartmouth continued to pelt Saints netminder Jess Moffat with shots and finally capitalized 3:48 into the third period. Tiffany Hagge sent the puck to Megan Walton, who was open in the high slot, and she fired a shot that just slipped between Moffat’s blocker and the right post to knot the score at 1-1. Less than five minutes later the Big Green took a 2-1 lead when Caroline Ethier scored at 8:35. Ethier fired a shot on the net and Moffat made the save. But the puck popped up and Ethier batted it out of the air and into the net.

The Saints responded at 12:42 when Berlinguette scored her 20th goal of the season and second point of the day. Berlinguette picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated into the Dartmouth zone along the left boards. She beat a Big Green defenseman and buried the puck behind Capuano to even the score for the Saints.

This time, it was Dartmouth that responded. At 16:53, with Berlinguette in the penalty box for contact to the head-roughing, Cherie Piper scored from the slot to give the Big Green a 3-2 lead. Hagge wristed a shot from the point, Piper tipped it down and into the Saints net. Hagge pushed the Big Green’s lead to 4-2 with an empty net goal with just 5.7 seconds to play in the contest.

Moffat matched a career-high with 38 saves in just her second loss of the season. Capuano posted 17 saves in the win for the Big Green. Unlike the shot total, the penalty total was fairly even as the Saints were whistled for eight infractions and the Big Green was called for nine.

The season does not appear to be over for the Saints as they await their second straight bid to the NCAA Tournament. The bracket will be announced on CSTV on the NCAA Selection Show starting at 6:00 p.m.

Thirteen of her 31 points have come on special teams. She has 11 points (1g, 10a) with the extra attacker and has two (1g, 1a) when the Saints are short-handed.
