SAINTS RETURN TO FROZEN FOUR; SET 17 SCHOOL RECORDS Apr. 13: The St.Lawrence University women's ice hockey team had a record breaking season in 2003-2004. The Saints made their second trip in four years to the NCAA Frozen Four. St.Lawrence finished third in the tournament. This year's team was the first in the program's history to win a share of the ECAC Regular Season Title and the first in program history to play in the ECAC Tournament Final. The Saints finished as the ECAC Tournament Runners-Up. The Saints set 17 team records and tied three more. Some of the records the Saints set include: most games played (39), most wins (28), highest winning percentage (.731), fewest home losses (3), most goals in a game (13), most power play goals (39), most shorthand goals (12), highest save percentage (.929), lowest goals against average (1.91) and longest win streak (9). St.Lawrence recorded its fourth consecutive 20+ win season in 2003-2004, going 28-10-1. Head Coach Paul Flanagan reached his 100th win behind the Saints' bench against Niagara on January 24. His record now stands at 114-52-13 with a .673 winning percentage in five seasons. In addition to setting numerous records, the Saints collected a lot of honors in 2003-2004. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury was named a JOFA/AHCA Second-Team All-American. Senior goalie Rachel Barrie was named the ECAC Goalie of the Year for the third consecutive season. Barrie and Kingsbury were both named First-Team All-ECAC. Junior Rebecca Russell and sophomore Laurie Ross were named to the ECAC Honorable Mention team. Freshman Chelsea Grills was named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. Grills and Abbie Bullard were both named to the ECAC All-Rookie Team. Senior Lindsay Charlebois was honored with the Sarah Devens Award which is given to the player that demonstrates leadership and commitment both on and off the ice. Barrie, Charlebois, Sara Simard, Christin Powers and Kate Michael were all named to the ECAC All-Academic team. Barrie, Charlebois and Simard are three-time All-Academic honorees. The Saints will graduate seven seniors (Barrie, Charlebois, Rickie-Lee Doyle, Dana Hasson, Kingsbury, Simard, and Barat Wolfe). But a talented and experienced group will return for the 2004-2005 season. BARRIE NAMED MVP, BEST DEFENSIVE PLAYER Apr. 11: Senior goalie Rachel Barrie went home with two major awards as the St.Lawrence women's hockey team was honored at the annual year-end banquet on Saturday night. Barrie was named the Bernie McKinnon Most Valuable Player and the Best Defensive Player. The Arnprior, Ontario native posted a 2.01 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. Her record in 2003-2004 was 25-10-1 with five shutouts. She finished her career at St.Lawrence with a 77-34-11 record, a 2.05 goals against average and a .926 save percentage, and 14 shutouts. Senior defenseman Lindsay Charlebois was honored with the Scholar-Athlete Award. The Potsdam, NY native boasts a 3.553 cummulative GPA. Charlebois was named the ECAC's Sarah Devens Award winner this season for given demonstrating leadership and commitment both on and off the ice. She finished her career as the Saints career leader in games played. Freshman Chelsea Grills was named the Rookie of the Year. The Stittsville, Ontario native was also named the ECAC Rookie of the Year this season. She led the nation in rookie scoring in 2003-2004 with 37 points and was third on team. She set the Saints record for assists by a rookie with 19. Sophomore defenseman Kate Michael was named the Most Improved Player. Michael was third on the team among defenseman with 14 points, including four power play goals and one game winning goal. Freshman defenseman Abbie Bullard was awarded the first-annual Lauren Matura Perseverance Award. This award is presented to the Saints player who, faced with a significant personal challenge, performed with distinction and conducted herself with grace, thereby bringing credit to herself and the team. Bullard was second on the team among rookies with 17 points. She set the single-season record with 71 penalty minutes. Seniors Barat Wolfe and Dana Hasson were given the Saints Hockey Boosters' Seventh Player Award. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury was given special recognition for becoming the Saints all-time leading scorer with 57 points. She holds the single season records for points, goals and assists. KINGSBURY SCORES; TEAM CANADA ADVANCES TO GOLD MEDAL GAME Apr. 5: Senior forward Gina Kingsbury, who missed the NCAA Frozen Four to train with Team Canada, scored on Sunday to help Canada to a 7-1 win over Sweden. The win propels Canada to the Gold Medal Game on Tuesday. Despite being down 1-0 to Sweden after the first period, Canada fought back to earn a 7-1 victory on Sunday night at the Halifax Metro Centre. Jennifer Botterill had a goal and three assists in the victory, while Hefford had a pair of goals and an assist. Jayna Hefford, who gave an inspiring performance all night long, drew Canada even at 6:08 of the second. But it was Kingsbury's tally at 11:27 that was the turning point, as her innocent-looking shot from just inside the blue line eluded the glove of Swedish goaltender Kim Martin and gave Canada the lead. "I didn't think I scored," said Kingsbury. "I was celebrating, but I thought Botterill got the rebound or something. Then I looked at the video. But I don't care how pretty it is. I'll take it." Caroline Ouellette picked up a goal and two helpers. Swedish goaltender Kim Martin was phenomenal in the loss, making 48 saves. Sami Jo Small earned the victory in goal for Canada with 12 stops. Attendance was 5,816. Despite spending the first 5:28 of the second period killing penalties, Canada weathered the storm and scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes. Jayna Hefford drew Canada even on the team's 16th shot of the game, walking out from behind the net to squeeze a quick shot through Martin's pads at 6:08. Gillian Apps, who converted on a breakaway at 15:25, and Caroline Ouellette, who banged home a rebound with just one second remaining in the period, put Canada up 4-1. Hefford has been all over the ice for Canada with a number of terrific offensive chances, while Martin has stopped 28 of 32 shots. For more information visit Team Canada's website at: http://www.hockeycanada.ca/e/index.html SAINTS RALLY TO BEAT DARTMOUTH 2-1, BRING HOME THIRD PLACE TROPHY Providence, RI: When St.Lawrence (28-10-1) took the ice Sunday afternoon, the Saints were playing for pride and for the seniors – a win in their final game. And they did just that. St.Lawrence rallied from a 1-0 deficit heading into the third period, to defeat Dartmouth (24-7-2) 2-1 and take home third place in the 2004 NCAA Frozen Four. For the first time this season the Saints won after trailing heading into the final period. Sophomore Katie Weatherston put the Big Green on the board first with her 29th goal of the season. Senior Sarah Clark fed Weatherston the puck from along the boards in the neutral zone. Weatherston skated in alone on senior goalie Rachel Barrie and beat her to give Dartmouth the lead. Freshman Abbie Bullard tied the game for the Saints at 3:51 in the third period. Clark went to the Dartmouth penalty box for high sticking at 2:43 to put St.Lawrence on the power play. In their seventh power play opportunity, the Saints finally capitalized. Junior Rebecca Russell fired a shot on freshman goalie Christine Capuano that sent the goalie sprawling across the mouth of the goal. Bullard, from the left side of the net, wristed the loose puck over Capuano for her third of the season and second power play goal. Freshman and ECAC Rookie of the Year, Chelsea Grills scored the gamewinner for the Saints at 10:53 in the third. Russell, from the corner, slipped the puck to Grills who was in the slot. Grills wristed the shot past Capuano’s glove side into the top of the net. Barrie, the ECAC Goalie of the Year, finished with 22 saves on 23 shots in her final game for St.Lawrence. She finishes the season with a 25-10-1 record. For her career, she is 77-34-11 with 14 shutouts. Capuano finished with 21 saves on 23 shots for Dartmouth. Notes: The Saints finish the season with a 28-10-1 overall and a 15-3-0 record. This season, St.Lawrence set new single-season school records for games played (39), wins (28), most home wins (17), fewest home losses (3), highest winning percentage (.731), most power play goals (39), most short hand goals (12), highest save percentage (.977), lowest goals against average (1.91), longest win streak (9), longest shutout streak (265:52), and most penalty minutes (512). HARVARD HOLDS OFF SAINTS 2-1 IN NATIONAL SEMI-FINAL Providence, RI: The St.Lawrence Saints (27-10-1, 15-3-0) tried for a late third period rally, but the Harvard Crimson (30-3-1, 15-3-0) held on to defeat the Saints 2-1 in the second semi-final game of the NCAA Frozen Four Friday night. “I thought they [Harvard] played very well. They’re a solid team and they were very well prepared,” said Saints head coach Paul Flanagan. “I’m very proud of our kids. They fought back up until the very last second.” “I could not be prouder of our team – of the way they represented St.Lawrence, the way they represented themselves.” Flanagan said. “The team did a great job, they never gave up.” Junior forward Nicole Corriero got the Crimson on the board early, scoring from her knees 8:48 into the first period. Corriero took a shot on senior goalie Rachel Barrie. The Arnprior, Ontario native made the save and the puck bounced behind the net. The puck came back out to Corriero who had gotten knocked to her Harvard got a huge momentum boost near the midway point of the second when sophomore goalie Ali Boe made a huge save on junior Rebecca Russell and the Crimson killed a St.Lawrence 5-on-3 power play. One minute into the power play, senior Sara Simard crossed the puck to Russell who was wide open in the slot. Russell one-timed a shot at the Crimson net, but Boe came up with the huge save. The Crimson capitalized on the momentum when sophomore Jennifer Raimondi gave Harvard a 2-0 lead at 18:24 in the second period. Freshman Caitlin Cahow wristed a shot from the face-off circle and Raimondi got her stick on the puck and tipped it down past Barrie for the goal. Freshman Crystal Connors scored at 19:40 in the third to end the Harvard shutout and put the Saints on the board. Freshman Chelsea Grills fed the puck to Russell. Russell carried the puck into the Crimson zone and passed to Connors. The Belford, NJ native one-timed the puck past Boe for her sixth goal of the season. St.Lawrence held the potent Harvard power play in check tonight. The Crimson was 0-for-6 with the player advantage. The Crimson power play is ranked second in the nation going 39-for-171 (22.8%). Note: Saints head coach Paul Flanagan was named as a finalist for the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Division I Coach of the Year on Friday afternoon. Flanagan was named the 2001 AHCA Coach of the Year when he led the Saints to the championship game of the Inaugural Women’s Frozen Four. To be a finalist, a coach must have been named his/her conference coach of the year, won their conference tournament or taken their team to the NCAA Frozen Four. The winner will be announced on April 24, 2004 in Naples, FL at the AHCA Banquet. KINGSBURY EARNS SECOND TEAM ALL-AMERICA HONORS Mar. 25: Senior forward Gina Kingsbury was named to the second team JOFA All-American team Thursday afternoon. This is Kingsbury's first All-American selection. Kingsbury, a native of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, is the third St.Lawrence player to earn all-America honors. Senior goalie Rachel Barrie is a two-time second team AHCA All-American. Isabelle Chartrand was named to the 2000-2001 second team AHCA All-American team. On Sunday, March 10 against Union, Kingsbury became the Saints' all-time leading scorer. She finishes her career with 152 points in 110 games. Kingsbury became the first Saint in Division I history to amass 50 or more points in one season. She set single season records for points (57), goals (26), and assists (31), and the single game record for points (9). Kingsbury tied the single game record for goals (4), the career record for shorthand goals (4), and the career record for game-winning goals (14). Kingsbury will miss the Frozen Four this weekend due to a commitment to the Canadian National Team. The 2004 IIHF World Championships are taking place in Nova Scotia March 30- April 6. Team Canada is hosting a mandatory camp to prepare for the World Championships. Dartmouth, who plays #1 Minnesota in the NCAA Semi-finals, will also be missing players due to the upcoming World Championships. The JOFA All-American Ice Hockey Teams are sponsored by JOFA, an international leader in hockey equipment, and chosen by members of the American Hockey Coaches Association. First-Team: Second-Team: SAINTS LEAVING FOR PROVIDENCE Mar. 24: The St.Lawrence women's hockey team is leaving Wednesday afternoon for Providence, RI and the NCAA Frozen Four. There will be a send-off/farewell for the team at 4:30 in front of Appleton Arena. The team will be finishing up practice and will be ready to hit the road for the journey to Providence. Fans are invited to come to Appleton Arena Wednesday at 4:30 to wish the team good luck and say farewell as they head off to battle for a national championship. The games are being telecast by CSTV. Check with your local cable or satelite provider for local availabilty. The games will also be broadcast on the radio at 92.7 FM "The Border". Fans can listen on the radio or via the web at SAINTS GOING TO NCAA FROZEN FOUR Mar. 21: Sunday proved to be an emotional day for the St.Lawrence women's hockey team. The Saints lost to Harvard 6-1 in the ECAC JPMorgan Chase Hockey Championship game Sunday afternoon. About 3:30 p.m., the Saints boarded the bus for the trip home to Canton, NY. At 5:30, St.Lawrence learned its fate - despite losing the ECAC Tournament Championship, the Saints were going to Providence to compete for an NCAA Championship. St.Lawrence is the No.3 seed and will meet No.2 Harvard at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, RI. The Saints and the Crimson will play for the fourth time in five weeks. St.Lawrence went to the Inaugural Women's NCAA Frozen Four in 2001, reaching the finals before falling to three-time NCAA Champion, Minnesota-Duluth. This year, there will finally be a new champion crowned as the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs did not make the four-team field. The other semi-final game will be No.1 Minnesota and No.4 Dartmouth at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. HARVARD DOWNS SAINTS 6-1; SAINTS FINISH AS RUNNER-UP IN ECAC TOURNAMENT Schenectady, NY: The St.Lawrence women’s hockey team (27-9-1, 15-3-0) finished as the runner-up in the ECAC Tournament Championship with a 6-1 loss to the Harvard Crimson. Saints goalie, senior Rachel Barrie, the ECAC Goalie of the Year, continued to make big saves in net for her team. Time after time, she stoned Harvard’s potent forwards, keeping her team in the game. On Saturday in the Saints 4-2 win over Dartmouth in the ECAC semi-finals, Barrie’s goaltending and special teams led the Saints to the win. On Sunday, Harvard proved to be too much, downing the Saints. Julie Chu made it 2-0 Harvard at 13:39 in the first when freshman Abbie Bullard went to the penalty box at 12:42 for tripping. Barrie made a stick save on Chu just moments earlier. But she was able to get the puck past Barrie the second time for her 14th of the season. Carrie Schroyer extended the Crimson’s lead to 3-0 at 4:03 in the second. Kat Sweet and Skinner picked up helpers on the goal. ECAC Player of the Year, Angela Ruggiero scored her 25th of the season to put Harvard up 4-0 at 15:30 Chu netted her second of the game 2:11 into the third period to put the Crimson on top 5-0. After a face-off to the right of Barrie, Jennifer Raimondi collected a loss puck and slid it to Chu in the slot. Chu one-timed the puck past Barrie for her 15th of the season. Mina Pell would add another, her first of the season, to extend Harvard’s lead to 6-0 at 10:50. Twenty-six seconds later, junior Whitney Carbone netted her fourth goal of the season to end Harvard goalie Ali Boe’s bid at a shut out. Amid a scramble in front of the Crimson net, Carbone stuck the puck past Boe The Crimson’s six goal outing is the most by a St.Lawrence opponent since a 6- 3 loss at New Hampshire on November 9, 2003. The Saints were out shot by Harvard 52-12, the fewest shots by the Saints since a 1-0 win over Wisconsin on November 23, 2001 when St.Lawrence managed just 13 shots. Barrie finished with 46 saves for the day and 86 for the weekend. Boe finished with 11 saves for Harvard. SAINTS GOING TO ECAC FINALS; DOWN DARTMOUTH 4-2 Schenectady, NY: The St.Lawrence women’s hockey team (27-8-1, 15-3-0) will look to make a sweep of ECAC titles with a win on Sunday against Harvard in the ECAC Finals. The Saints, regular season co-champions, defeated the Dartmouth Big Green (24-6-2, 14-3-1) 4-2 in the ECAC Semi-finals to earn a trip to the championship game at noon in Schenectady. The St.Lawrence special teams were in top form Saturday afternoon, as the Saints first three goals all came on the power play. St.Lawrence went 4-for-5 on the penalty kill, showing why the Saints have the fifth-best penalty-kill unit in the country. Dartmouth evened the score 2:45 into the second period. Tiffany Hagge scored her 21st goal of the season with a helper coming from defenseman Louise Pietrangelo. Hagge slipped the puck past Saint goalie, senior Rachel Barrie, when the puck came sliding across the ice in front of the St.Lawrence net. Freshman Chelsea Grills, the ECAC Rookie of the Year, scored 58 seconds into a St.Lawrence power play when Cherie Piper went to the box at 3:09 for checking. Senior Gina Kingsbury, from the corner, fed the puck to Grills just outside the crease. Grills tipped the puck past Cochran for her 16th of the season and her fourth power play goal. Doyle netted her second of the season just 16 seconds into a Saints’ power play when Gillian Apps paid a visit to the box for checking. Connors picked up her second assist of the day when she slid the puck to Doyle. She pulled in the pass and wristed a shot from the point, blasting the puck past Cochran. Kingsbury put the Saints on top 4-1 with her 26th goal of the season at 5:46 in the third period. Grills skated into the Big Green zone with the puck. From the left face-off circle, Grills slid the puck to Kingsbury who skated in alone on Cochran and put the puck past the Big Green goalie. Piper made up for taking a penalty and allowing a power play goal, by scoring a power play goal for the Big Green to pull Dartmouth within two. At 16:20, freshman Abbie Bullard went to the box for tripping. Piper capitalized with her 10th goal of the season at 17:59. The Big Green pulled Cochran at the end, but were unable to get another puck past Barrie. Barrie, proving why she was named the ECAC Goalie of the Year for the third consecutive time, made 38 saves between the pipes for St.Lawrence. Cochran finished with 17 saves in net. The Saints will meet Harvard Sunday at noon for the ECAC Tournament Championship. The puck is set to drop at 12:00 p.m. Harvard beat Brown 2-1 in the first game, with the game winner coming in the 25th minute of overtime. BARRIE GOALIE OF THE YEAR, GRILLS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR, CHARLEBOIS SARAH DEVENS AWARD WINNER Mar. 19: Several Saints took home post-season honors at the ECAC Banquet in Glenville, N.Y. on Friday night. Senior goalie and tri-captain Rachel Barrie was named the ECAC Goalie of the Year for a record third straight time. Freshman forward Chelsea Grills became the second St.Lawrence player to be named the ECAC Rookie of the Year. Barrie was the first St.Lawrence player to earn the honor of Rookie of the Year in 2000-2001. Senior tri-captain Lindsay Charlebois was honored with the Sarah Devens Award which is given to the player that demonstrates leadership and commitment both on and off the ice. Charlebois is the second straight St.Lawrence player to receive this honor. Barrie was given the Sarah Devens Award last season. This season, Barrie has posted a 1.91 goals against average, a .929 save percentage, a 23-8-1 record and five shut outs. She set single season records for shut outs (5) and wins (23) by a goaltender this season. Barrie owns nearly every St.Lawrence goaltending record, including lowest goals against average, highest save percentage, most minutes played, most saves (career), most shut outs, longest shut out streak, most wins and best winning percentage. She was named the ECAC Goalie of the Week seven times in 2003-2004. In her rookie season, Grills has notched 33 points (15g, 18a) in 31 games. She tied the record for assists by a rookie with 18 and is seven points shy of tying the record for most points by a rookie. Grills was been named the ECAC Rookie of the Week three times this season. She leads all rookies in the ECAC scoring, 11 points ahead of the 2nd highest scoring rookie. On Sunday, March 14 against Colgate, Charlebois set the record for most games played by a Saint with 140 appearances. A solid blue liner for the Saints in her four years, she was named a tri-captain for the 2003-2004 season and has helped the Saints record a 1.81 goals against average, the sixth best in the nation. Charlebois has picked up five points this season, giving her 29 (7g, 22a) for her career. Currently, she is third all-time in scoring among defenseman. Barrie and senior forward Gina Kingsbury earned First-Team All-Conference honors. This is the third time Barrie has made First-Team and the first time for Kingsbury, who had a record setting senior season. She set the career record for points with 150, the single season record for points (55), the single game record for points (9 – 4g, 5a), the single season record for goals (25), and the single season record for assists (30). Kingsbury has tied the single game record for goals (4), the career record for short-hand goals (4) and the career record for game-winning goals (14). This season, she has registered 50 points (25g, 30a) becoming the first Saint to ever register 50+ points. Junior forward Rebecca Russell and sophomore defenseman Laurie Ross earned Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. This is the first time Russell has earned all-conference honors. The Clarenville, Newfoundland has netted 51 points (24g, 27a) this season to become only the second Saint to ever record 50+ points. She is the seventh Saint to record 100+ career points. She surpassed Chera Marshall for sixth all-time in career scoring with 105 points. Ross was named to the All-Rookie Team last season. She leads all Saints defensemen with 17 points (1g, 16a). In her short career, she has 28 points (5g, 23a), making her fifth all-time among defenseman in scoring. Grills and freshman defenseman Abbie Bullard were named to the All-Rookie Team. Bullard has picked up 16 points (2g, 14a) in 33 games. She set the single season record for penalty minutes with 59 and she is second on the team in rookie scoring. Since the 2000-2001 season, the Saints have had six players named to the All-Rookie team, including three (Rachel Barrie, Gina Kingsbury and Isabelle Chartrand) in 2001. ECAC FINAL FOUR GAMES BROADCAST ON 92.7 FM Mar. 17: The St.Lawrence women's hockey team will have their games this weekend in the ECAC Final Four broadcast on 92.7 FM "The Border". Fans can listen on the radio or via the web at: Fans can also view live stats of the semi-final game against Dartmouth on Saturday at BARRIE AND GRILLS NET ECAC HONORS Mar. 15: For the seventh time this season, senior goalie Rachel Barrie has been named the ECAC Goalie of the Week after her performance in the ECAC Quaterfinal series against Colgate. The only ECAC goalie to come close to Barrie this season is Rebecca Lahar of Colgate, who has been named ECAC Goalie of the Week four times. The Arnprior, Ontario native stopped 60-of-63 shots by the Raiders in the ECAC quarterfinal series. With the win on Friday night, Barrie set the single season record for wins by a goalie with 22. On Sunday, she added to that record by earning the win. This season Barrie has posted a 1.91 goals against average, a .929 save percentage, a 23-8-1 record and five shutouts. Freshman forward Chelsea Grills was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week for the third time this season, and the second week in a row. The Stittsville, Ontario native picked up 2 goals and 3 assists in the ECAC quarterfinal series against Colgate. Her two Senior forward Gina Kingsbury was named to the Honor Roll after notching 4 goals and 2 assists in the ECAC quarterfinal series against Colgate. On Sunday she recorded her fourth career hat trick. SAINTS ON THEIR WAY TO ECAC SEMI-FINALS; DOWN COLGATE 7-1 Mar. 14: St.Lawrence (26-8-1, 15-3-0) rebounded well from its 1-0 loss Saturday afternoon, to down the Colgate Raiders (16-17-3, 6-11-1) 7-1 to earn a trip to Schenectady, NY for the ECAC semi-finals. The Saints win the ECAC quarterfinal season with the Raiders 2-1. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury set yet another record with her three goals Sunday afternoon. Kingsbury now has 25 goals in 2003-2004, setting the record for goals in one season with 25. Freshman forward Crystal Connors opened up the scoring with a power-play goal at 10:38 in the first. Connors slipped the puck past Raider goalie Rebecca Lahar amid a scramble in front of the net. Kingsbury tipped in her first goal of the game at 19:12 in the first. Freshman forward Chelsea Grills lasered a pass to Kingsbury from the corner. Kingsbury one-timed the pass past Lahar to put the Saints up 2-0. Kingsbury added her second of the game at 3:11 in the second period. Thirty-one seconds later, sophomore forward Emilie Berlinguette added a short-handed goal, putting St.Lawrence up 4-0. Junior Rebecca Russell got in on the action, scoring her 23rd of the season. Kingsbury collected the puck and skated around the Colgate net, slipping the puck to Russell, who wristed it past Lahar for the score. Kingsbury scored her third goal to complete her fourth career hat trick at 14:03 in the second. She took a pass from Russell and skated through the Colgate defense and beat Lahar, giving St.Lawrence a 6-0 lead. Russell rounded out the scoring for the Saints, chipping in her 24th goal of the season at 17:59 of the second. The Saints power play unit was 2-for-5 and the penalty kill was 6-for-6 with a short-handed goal. Barrie finished with 18 saves. Lahar finished with 28 saves in two periods. Brook Wheeler played the final 20 minutes in net for the Raiders, finishing with 5 saves. LAHAR BLANKS SAINTS, COLGATE WINS 1-0 Mar. 13: The Colgate Raiders (16-16-3, 6-11-1) took the ice like it wasnt ready for its season to be over and rallied around the play of junior goalie Rebecca Lahar. Lahar made 50 saves in net to beat St.Lawrence (25-8-1, 15-3-0) 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena. Colgate evened the series at 1-1 to stay alive in the ECAC quarterfinal series. The Saints and the Raiders will meet in the final game in this best-of-three series Sunday afternoon at Appleton Arena, game time is set for 4:00 p.m. The Saints outshot the Raiders 14 to 5 in the first period but were unable to get the puck in the net. St.Lawrence continued to pound the Colgate net in the second with 16 shots. But Lahar was playing like a goalie possessed. Sophomore Becky Irvine put the Raiders on the net at 8:47 in the second. There was a scramble in front of Saints goalie Rachel Barrie and Irvine was able to get her stick on the puck, putting it past Barrie for the eventual game-winner. St.Lawrence came out firing in the third period, outshooting the Raiders 20 to 6. At 17:39 in the period, Micki King went to the Colgate box for obstruction-holding, putting the Saints on the power-play. At 18:46, Amanda Barre joined King in the box for tripping. Barrie left the ice and the Saints took a 6-on-3 advantage for 55 seconds. The Raiders packed in front of their own net, not giving the Saints much room to stick the puck in the back of the net. St.Lawrence reeled off a flurry of shots, but Lahar and the Raiders held strong to earn the win. Barrie finished with 17 saves for the Saints. Lahar had 50 stops to earn her fourth shutout of the season. The Saints were shutout for the first time ever in the ECAC playoffs and just the second time this season. The Saints were 2-of-6 on the power-play while going 5-of-5 on the penalty kill. The win tonight gives St.Lawrence 25 for the season, breaking the record of 24 set in the 2000-2001 season, the season when the Saints went to the Inaugural NCAA Frozen Four. Junior forward Rebecca Russell notched her 100th career point when she picked up an assist on senior forward Gina Kingsburys power-play goal at 10:16 in the first period. Freshman defenseman Abbie Bullard fired the puck from the point down low to Russell who threaded the needle to Kingsbury who one-timed the puck into an open net. At 15:23 sophomore forward Emilie Berlinguette scored the game-winner, a power-play goal with assists from senior forward Rickie-Lee Doyle and sophomore defenseman Laurie Ross. Doyle took a pass from Ross and then skipped it to Berlinguette who skated in front of the Raider net and beat goalie Rebecca Lahar for her 11th of the season. Grills picked up her 14th of the night when she collected a pass from Bullard and skated through the Colgate defense and beat Lahar to put the Saints up 3-0. Grills scored her second with 28 seconds remaining in the second amid a scramble in front of the Raider net. Russell scored her 22nd goal of the season to put the Saints on top 5-0 at 2:56 in the third period, beating Raider goalie Brook Wheeler. Brittany Briggs of Colgate ended Saint goalie Rachel Barries bid for a shutout at 13:18 in the third period. Barrie finished with 25 saves in her record-setting 22nd win of the season. Lahar stopped 19-of-23 shots in 35:38. Wheeler stopped 10-of-11 shots in 24:14. The Saints and the Raiders will meet again Saturday afternoon in game two of the ECAC quarterfinals. Kingsbury was named the ECAC Co-Player of the Week after her record-setting performance against Union. Grills earned ECAC Rookie of the Week honors. This is the second time this season that Kingsbury and Grills have received these honors. Kingsbury became the Saints all-time Division I career points leader in the Saints' 9-1 win over Union Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, Kingsbury picked up 9 points (4g, 5a) to set the record for most points in a game, most points in a season (47) and most assists in a season (26), and tied the record for most points in a career with 142. In Sunday's game, she earned an assist on the first goal of the game, 4:45 in to the first period, to become the Saints all-time points leader. She picked up a second assist in the game for an 11-point weekend. She now has 144 career points in 105 games for the Saints. The Saints will share the league title with the Harvard Crimson. St.Lawrence moves onto the ECAC Playoffs next weekend where they will be seeded No.2. Since Harvard swept St.Lawrence during the regular season, the Crimson earn the No.1 seed. The Saints will host the No.7 Colgate Raiders at Appleton Arena for a best-of-three ECAC Quarterfinals series. The Saints special teams unit was in top form this afternoon. St.Lawrence scored five short-handed goals, a new school record, and three power-play goals. The Saints 11 short-handed goals this season also sets a new school record. St.Lawrence tied the record for wins in a season with 24 this afternoon. Senior goalie Rachel Barrie tied the record for wins in a season with 21. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury broke the record for most points in a career when she assisted on Kate Michael's power-goal in the first period. With her next point, she will become the seventh player in Saints Division I history to record 100 points. Junior Whitney Carbone put the Saints up 3-0 in the first. Freshman Chelsea Grills notched a short-handed goal to put the Saints on top 4-0. The Dutchwomen finally ended their scoring draught with a power-play goal 51 seconds into the third period. St.Lawrence set the record for most goals in a game, breaking the previous record of 11. The Saints also set the record for most goals in a period with six, besting the previous record of five. HARVARD DOWNS SAINTS 5-1 Feb. 21- Junior Nicole Corriero led the No.2 Harvard Crimson (22-2-1, 12-2-0) to a 5-1 win over the Saints (20-7-1, 11-3-0) with a hat trick Saturday afternoon. The win pushes the Crimson into first place in the ECAC with 24 points, depending on the outcome of the Darmouth-Princeton game Saturday afternoon. On Friday night, the Saints were able to keep Harvard and its power-play unit, ranked second in the nation, in check. On Saturday afternoon, that would not be the case. The Crimson went two-for-five with the player advantage. The Crimson got on the board early in the first period. Junior Nicole Corriero put Harvard up 1-0 with her 29th goal of the season at 4:57. Corriero skated into the Saints zone and beat Barrie glove-side for the score. Harvard extended its lead to 2-0 when junior Rebecca Russell went to the penalty box for slashing at 18:45 in the first period. Senior Lauren McAuliffe collected a pass from Corriero and put the puck past Barrie for her 14th goal of the season at 19:21. Corriero scored her second of the game to put the Crimson up 3-0 at 6:02 in the second. Corriero blasted a shot from just beyond the left face-off circle that beat Barrie for the score. Junior Christin Powers went to the penalty box at 9:43 in the second for roughing, putting Harvard on the power play. Corriero scored her third goal of the game to complete her hat trick at 10:31. Senior Angela Ruggiero blasted a shot from the blue line and Corriero, standing just outside the crease got her stick the puck, tipping it past Barrie. Ruggiero put the Crimson up 5-0 with her 20th goal of the season. Sophomore Julie Chu and Ruggiero skated into the Saints zone on a breakaway. Barrie stopped Chu’s shot but the puck rebounded out to the left where Ruggiero stuck it in for the score. Freshman Crystal Connors finally ended Crimson Ali Boe’s bid for a shutout at 14:31 in the third. Sophomore Jennifer Raimondi went to the penalty box for cross checking at 12:53 and the Saints went on the power play. Freshman Abbie Bullard fired a shot on the Harvard net and Boe came up with the stop. But Connors was there to stick the rebound in the net for her third goal of the season. Barrie finished with 30 saves in net for the Saints. Boe finished with 25 for Harvard. The Saints return home next weekend to face Colgate in a Friday- Saturday ECAC series. HARVARD STUNS ST.LAWRENCE 3-2 IN OVERTIME Feb. 20: In an overtime thriller in Cambridge, Mass. the No. 2 Harvard Crimson (21-2-1, 11-2-0) ended No. 4/3 St.Lawrence’s (20-6-1,11-2-0) record nine-game winning streak. Senior Angela Ruggiero scored the game-winner 2:10 into the extra stanza. With the win, St.Lawrence and Harvard are tied atop the ECAC with 22 points each. The Saints got on the scoreboard first with 1:30 left to play in the first St.Lawrence looked to have the momentum heading into the intermission, but Harvard took it away. The Crimson evened the score at 1-1 with 35 seconds left in the period. Sophomore Jennifer Raimondi scored on a two-on-one assisted by sophomore Julie Chu and senior Angela Ruggiero. Senior Gina Kingsbury put the Saints back up at 5:08 in the second. Kingsbury collected a rebound off Boe in the right circle and blasted a shot into the Crimson net for her 17th goal of the season. Freshman Abbie Bullard made history when she was sent to the penalty box for roughing at 9:45 in the second period. The penalty gave Bullard 59 penalty minutes this season, breaking the record for most penalty minutes in a season set by Stacy Boudrias in the 1997-1998 season. With 12:43 gone in the second, the Crimson pulled even again. Freshman Liz Solley scored her first goal of the season to knot the score at 2-2. Both teams would have more opportunities, but they would head to the locker rooms all tied up. Senior goalie Rachel Barrie made some huge saves to keep her team in the game. With 14 minutes gone in the third, Barrie stuffed a shot attempt by Ruggiero to keep the score at 2-2. At 17:28, Barrie came up with a big glove save on Raimondi. Barrie denied Raimondi again, 45 seconds into the overtime. In the game, Barrie made 43 saves between the pipes for the Saints. Boe finished with 20 for the Crimson. Whether the occasion be the Frozen Four or elsewhere, St. Lawrence senior goaltender Rachel Barrie is tough to beat when the opponent is ranked No.1 and wearing Green. Barrie, the USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week, stopped 53 of 55 shots in carrying the Saints to a sweep of No. 1 Dartmouth at Thompson Arena this past weekend. Barrie made 23 saves in St. Lawrence's 3-0 shutout of Dartmouth on Friday night and 30 saves in the 3-2 victory in Saturday's rematch. The victories moved the Saints into first place in the ECAC standings and up to No. 4 in the USCHO.com poll. They now own the longest active unbeaten streak in the nation at 9-0-0, which is also the longest in school history. With her shutout on Friday night, Barrie set the Saints Division I record for most shutouts in a season with five. In her career, she has 14, also a school record. Barrie (Arnprior, Ont.) in this sweep brought back memories of St. Lawrence's 3-1 upset of top seed Dartmouth in the inaugural NCAA tournament semifinal three years ago. Barrie improved to 5-3-2 for her career with a 2.07 goals against average and .944 save percentage against the Big Green. Her save percentage of .930 this season ranks sixth nationally. This marks the fifth time this season that Barrie has been named ECAC Goalie or Co-Goalie of the Week. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury and freshman Elisabeth Pahler were named to the ECAC's honor roll for the play this weekend in the Saints sweep of No.1 Dartmouth. Kingsbury netted two goals, including the game winner Saturday afternoon and picked up an assist. Pahler also scored two goals in the series. SAINTS WIN 3-2, SWEEP NO.1 DARTMOUTH Hanover, NH: The Saints are making their case for a bid to NCAA Frozen Four in Providence, March 26. After spending five straight weeks at home, the Saints traveled to No.1 Dartmouth with first place in the ECAC on the line. St.Lawrence hung on for a 3-2 win over the Big Green to complete the sweep and takeover first place in the ECAC. St.Lawrence improves to 20-5-1 overall and 11-1-0 in the ECAC. This marks the fourth-straight 20-win season for the Saints. Dartmouth falls to 17-4-2 overall and 9-2-1 in the ECAC. Dartmouth, looking for revenge, came out firing Saturday afternoon, picking up where they'd left off Friday night. So did Saints goalie senior Rachel Barrie. The Big Green outshot the Saints 14-6 in the first period. Sophomore Tiffany Hagge finally ended Barrie's shutout streak at 12:41 in the first period. Hagge took a pass from sophomore Cherie Piper and blasted a shot over Barrie's shoulder to take the lead. Freshman Elisabeth Pahler knotted the score at 17:59 with her second goal in the series. Amid a flurry of shots in front of the Dartmouth net, Pahler collected the loose puck and one-timed a shot on goal. Sophomore netminder Stephanie Cochran got her glove up, the puck hit her glove, bounced over and into the net. Junior Rebecca Russell put the Saints up 2-1 just 29 seconds into the second, with her sixth power play goal of the season. Hagge went to the penalty box 15 seconds in for high sticking and the St. Lawrence power play finally bore fruit. Senior Gina Kingsbury won the faceoff in the Dartmouth zone, skipping the puck to freshman Crystal Connors. Connors fired a shot from the right side, but Cochran blocked the shot. The puck rebounded out to the left where Russell lifted the puck into an open Dartmouth net. The remaining 19:31 of the period passed without a score, as both Barrie and Cochran came up with huge saves. Dartmouth held the advantage in shots, 24-15, but the Saints had the advantage where it counts - on the scoreboard. The St.Lawrence power play unit came up big again at 8:06 in the third period. Junior Alana BreMiller went to the Dartmouth penalty box for tripping at 7:36. Freshman Crystal Connors had control of the puck when she was knocked to the ice by a Big Green skater. Kingsbury pulled in the loose puck and took off into the Dartmouth zone. She rifled a shot from the left circle, blasting the puck past Cochran to put the Saints up 3-1. Skating four-on-four, BreMiller pulled the Big Green within one at 15:55. Junior Megan Walton won the faceoff in the Saints zone, sending the puck out to BreMiller. She pulled in the puck and blasted a shot past Barrie for her second goal of the season. Barrie finished with 30 saves in the goal for her 18th win this season. A loud and boisterous home crowd celebrated as Germany jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on two goals from Maritta Becker before Canada stormed back to tie the game with two quick markers in the first 5:53 of the second period from Dana Pretty of Richmond, BC and Jeni Creary of Shell Lake, SK. The victory marks the second consecutive Air Canada Cup title for the National Women's Under 22 Team. Canadian players and staff will return home on Sunday, February 8th. Feb. 8: Canada's National Women's Under 22 Team upped their record to 2-0 at the Air Canada Cup with a 6-0 victory over Switzerland on Friday at Bad Tolz, Germany. Fifteen year old goaltender Florence Schelling was stellar in goal for the Swiss, holding Canada off the scoreboard until Heather Logan opened the scoring at 7:24 of the second period. Meaghan Mikkelson of St. Albert, AB added her first of two goals before the end of the period, while Annie Guay of Rouyn Noranda, QC, Rebecca Russell of Clarenville, NF and Jeni Creary of Shell Lake, SK scored for Canada in the third period. Jana Bugden of Cornerbrook, NF posted the shutout. Saints freshman forward Chelsea Grills picked up an assist on Russell's goal in the third period. KINGSBURY SCORES HAT TRICK; SAINTS BEAT YALE 5-2 Feb. 7: Senior forward Gina Kingsbury netted her third career hat trick this afternoon leading the Saints to a 5-2 victory over ECAC opponent Yale. The Saints improve to 18-5-1 overall and 9-1-0 in the ECAC, just one point behind first-place Dartmouth. Yale falls to 7-11-3 overall and 4-7-0 in the ECAC. Junior Whitney Carbone opened up the scoring with about five minutes gone in the first. Freshman Nicole Mandras tipped a Yale pass, skipping the puck to junior Christin Powers. Powers collected the puck and skated from the right circle down to the left side of the net and fired on Yale goalie Sarah Love. Love came up with the save but the shot rebounded out to the right. Carbone stuck the puck in past Love for the score. Yale's Christina Sharun evened things up four minutes later when freshman Elisabeth Pahler went to the penalty box for tripping. Sharun took a pass from Sheila Zingler and blasted a shot from beyond the right circle, beating Saint goalie Rachel Barrie to tie the game. About five minutes later, the Saints had the apparent go-ahead goal by sophomore Emilie Berlinguette called back because of a player in the crease. The Saints outshot the Bulldogs 20-6 in the second, but managed just one goal. Four minutes into the period, Kingsbury netted her first goal of the game. Freshman Crystal Connors slid the puck to Kingsbury in the right circle. She took the pass and skated to left and rifled a shot from directly in front of the net, beating Love for her 12th goal of the season. In a three-minute stretch midway through the third, three goals were scored. Senior Rickie-Lee Doyle got the first one, six minutes into the third. Two minutes later, Yale's Jenna Spring scored the second, pulling the Bulldogs within one. Spring took a pass from Regan Gilbride and blasted a shot from between the circles, putting the puck in the top of the net. Kingsbury scored the third just 60 seconds later. Kingsbury finished a rebound from a Sara Simard shot for her second of the night. Kingsbury added an empty-net goal with 47 seconds remaining to complete her hat trick. Love finished the game with 47 saves, giving her 91 saves for the weekend. Love reminded Saints fans of Vermont's Kami Cote, making tremendous saves to keep her team in the game. Barrie finished with 25 saves for the Saints. Next weekend, the Saints will hit the road for the first time since December 5, as they travel to Dartmouth. The series will be a match-up between the No.1 and No.2 teams in the ECAC. The teams will meet Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
SAINTS HOLD OFF BULLDOGS, WIN 3-2 Feb. 6: Sophomore Kate Michael netted the eventual game-winner late in the second period. Michael's goal put the Saints up 3-1. But the Saints had to hold off an upset-minded Yale team, to earn the win. St. Lawrence improves to 17-5-1 overall and 8-1-0 in the ECAC, keeping a hold on second place. The Saints came out firing from the very beginning. St. Lawrence outshot Yale 20-3 in the first period. Bulldog goalie Sarah Love kept her team in the game. Senior Gina Kingsbury finally broke the net for the Saints with 11 minutes gone in the first period. Freshman Crystal Connors slid the puck to Kingsbury who was waiting to the left of the net. Kingsbury collected the pass and skated around behind the net and tucked the puck behind Love from the right side. "I was really impressed with the first twenty minutes, I thought we created a lot of chances," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Everyone was playing with a lot of enthusiasm." Sophomore Emilie Berlinguette put the Saints up 2-0 with just 90 seconds gone in the second period. Senior Rickie-Lee Doyle slid a pass through traffic to Berlinguette who was just outside the crease on the left side. Berlinguette fired on the Yale goal, but Love came up with the stop. The puck rebounded back out to Berlinguette. This time, the Ottawa, Ontario native fired the puck past Love for the score. The game started to get a little rough in the second period. Referee Tom DiFusco appeared to tire of the play and called seven penalties in the period. "The special teams seemed to take us out of our flow in the second period," Flanagan said. "Yale's a real good team and they work real hard, they put us back on our heels a bit." The Bulldogs pulled within one, at 8:01 left in the second. Erin Duggan capitalized on a turnover in the Saints zone. Duggan collected the puck and passed it to Jenna Spring. Spring quickly passed to Kristin Savard who came up from her right side. Savard took the pass and fired from just outside the crease on the right, putting the puck past Barrie into the top of the net. With 47 seconds remaining, Michael scored what turned out to be the game-winner. From the right corner, Kingsbury passed the puck across the ice to Michael who was just outside the left circle. Michael corralled the puck, teed it up and wristed a shot past Love for the score. Spring made things interesting when the Bulldogs went on the power play with seven minutes to play. Nicole Symington fired from the right circle but the shot was blocked by a Saint defender. The puck pin-balled around in front of the net. Duggan one-timed a shot directly at Barrie, but the Saint goalie came up with the save. Again, the puck bounced back out. Spring picked up the loose puck and fired it past Barrie for the score. Up by one goal, the Saint tightened their laces, determined to hold on. Love went to the bench with 1:25 left to play and Yale took the player advantage. However, the Bulldogs were unable to manage any shots on goal, thanks to the Saints defense. Barrie finished with 31 saves in her 15th win of the season. Love finished with 44 saves. The Saints and the Bulldogs will tangle again tomorrow afternoon at Appleton. The puck is set to drop at 4:00 p.m. GRILLS SCORES IN CANADA'S 6-1 WIN OVER FINLAND Feb. 5: Canadas National Womens Under 22 team opened the 2004 Air Canada Cup with a 6-1 victory Finland on Thursday at Garmisch-Perlenkirchen Germany. Playing with the U-22 team are junior Rebecca Russell, sophomore Laurie Ross and freshman Chelsea Grills. In the second period it was all Canada as the line of Marieve Provost, Stephanie Jones and Kaley Hall were in on all three-second period goals. Provost from Laval, QC put Canada up 2-0 at the 20:54 mark when she tapped the puck into a wide open net off a Jones rebound, Annie Guay from Rouyn-Noranda, QC recorded the second assist. At 30:10 Kerri Wallace of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta jumped in from the point to give Canada a 3-0 cushion; Jones from Kimberley, British Columbia had the assist. The entire line would be in on Canadas fourth goal as Hall, from Calgary, Alberta buried the puck from the slot @ 39:09, assisting was Provost with her second point and Jones with her third assist. Both teams would head to the dressing rooms with Canada in full control leading 4-0 and out shooting Finland 23-3 after two. At 42:28 of the third, with both teams playing 4 on 4, Bobbi Jo Slusar From Swift Current, Saskatchewan put Canada up 5-0 when she one timed a pass from her defensive partner Guay. A breakdown in defensive zone face-off coverage gave Finland their lone goal at 48:31 Mira Huhta scored from the point with Riikka Noronen assisting. Team Canada would round out the scoring at 50:16 when Chelsea Grills of Stittsville, ON got in alone, scoring Canadas sixth goal of the game. Canada went 5 for 5 on the penalty kill and 0 for 5 on the power play. Team Canada out shot Finland 65-21, Brittony Chartier of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan recorded the win in net while Marieve Provost with a goal and an assist was named Canadas Player of the game. Lindsey Tilbury evened the score with under five minutes to play in the period. Jenny Hogan fired a shot from the left circle. The puck bounced around in front of the net, where Tilbury was able to get her stick on it and slide it past Saint goalie Lea Armendariz to tie the game. Doyle scored her second to put the Saints back on top just 57 seconds into the second period. Kristen Norris went to the penalty box for Vermont for high sticking. Thirty seconds into the power play, the Saints scored. Freshman Elisabeth Pahler fed the puck to sophomore Emilie Berlinguette. Berlinguette tipped the puck to Doyle who fired from the left circle. Doyle tucked the puck just inside the far post past Cote. Hilary Johnson answered when the Saints got called for too many on the ice. Pahler went to the box to serve the penalty. Hogan, from just outside the right circle, fed the puck to Johnson who was to the left of the net. Hogan took the puck and skated behind the net and tucked the puck past Armendariz to even the score. With under five minutes to play in the third, Doyle completed her hat trick, putting the Saints on top for good. Sophomore Kate Michael rifled off a shot that was blocked by a Vermont defender. Sophomore Tracy Muzerall collected the puck and fired on net. Cote came up with the stop, but the puck ricocheted back out. Doyle collected the puck and blasted it past Cote for the score. Cote came to the bench with 1:07 left to play as the 'Cats were looking for the equalizer with the extra skater. Vermont managed just one shot on net with the advantage. With time winding down, Doyle got her stick on a Vermont pass, starting a two-on-one advantage with Simard. Doyle drew the defender and slipped the puck to Simard. Simard collected the puck and fired it into the empty net for the insurance goal. Cote faced 51 shots by the Saints, with 25 coming in the third period. She finished with 47 saves, doing her best to keep Vermont in the game. Armendariz finished with 10 saves en route to her eighth career win and second of the season. The Saints were playing without junior forward Rebecca Russell, sophomore defenseman Laurie Ross and freshman forward Chelsea Grills as they traveled to Europe with the Canadian U-22 team. "This provides an opportunity for some kids to elevate their game, with more ice time, a chance to play with someone who's a regular," said head coach Paul Flanagan. BARRIE NAMED ECAC GOALIE OF THE WEEK FOR FOURTH TIME THIS SEASON Jan 27: Senior goalie Rachel Barrie was named the ECAC Goalie of the Week for the fourth time this season. Barrie stopped 20 saves on Friday night to record her second consecutive shutout and extend her shutout streak to 123:44. Barrie has tied the Saints' Division I record for shutouts in a season with 4. On Saturday, Barrie made 25 saves and allowed two goals. Her shutout streak ended at 163:05, which ranks as the longest in Saints Division I history. Her shutout Friday night was the 13th of her career. Barrie is the only goalie in the ECAC to receive this honor four times. Rebecca Lahar of Colgate has been named ECAC Goalie of the Week three times this season. Senior Rickie-Lee Doyle and freshman Chelsea Grills made the honor roll. Doyle scored a short-handed goal and added an assist in the Saints' 4-0 victory over Niagara Friday night. On Saturday, Doyle scored and added an assist to help the Saints to a 5-2 win over Niagara. Grills scored the game-winning goal just over a minute into the game Friday night in the Saints 4-0 win. She also added an assist. On Saturday, Grills assisted on a shorthanded goal to put the Saints up 2-0. St. Lawrence would win 5-2. COACH FLANAGAN HITS CENTURY MARK, SAINTS WIN 5-2 Jan. 24: Head Coach Paul Flanagan led the Saints (14-5-1) to his 100th victory this afternoon, a 5-2 win over the Niagara Purple Eagles (4-15-3). Freshman Kim Kodatsky scored the game winner with 11 seconds remaining in the first period. When asked how he felt about earning his 100th career win behind the bench, Coach Flanagan credited everyone involved with the program. "It's important for the program and how hard we've worked. It says a lot about everyone involved, [assistant coach] Jodi McKenna and everyone who helped start the program - Bernie McKinnon, Pam Mahoney and Ron Waske," said Flanagan. Freshman Elisabeth Pahler scored her second goal in as many games to open up the scoring for the Saints. Sophomore Emilie Berlinguette tipped the puck to senior Rickie-Lee Doyle. Doyle skated in and fired a shot that was blocked by a Niagara defender. The puck ricocheted back out to Pahler who was just outside the left circle. Pahler collected the puck and blasted it past goalie Jennifer Mascaro for the goal. Junior Rebecca Russell put St. Lawrence up 2-0 with 14:00 minutes gone in the first. Senior Lindsay Charlebois got her stick on a Niagara pass and tipped the puck to freshman Chelsea Grills. Grills took off with the puck on a two-on-one with Russell. The rookie from Stittsville, Ontario took the puck all the way down into the Niagara zone, pulling the defenseman and the goalie to her side. Grills slipped the puck to Russell who was waiting on the right side of the net. Russell fired it into the top of the net for the short handed tally. Kodatsky scored what turned out to be the game winner with time winding down in the first. Sophomore Tracy Muzerall brought the puck into the Niagara end and passed it to freshman Nicole Mandras. Mandras skated around the left circle looking for an opening. She fired the puck and it bounced around in front of the net where Kodatsky put in for her second of the season. Connors put the Saints up 4-0 with a power play goal at the 17 minute mark in the second period. Jessica Clermont went to the Niagara box for hooking at 15:38 and put the Saints on the power play. Russell skipped a cross ice pass to Muzerall who was at the top of the right circle. Muzerall lasered a pass right to Connors who was just outside the crease. Connors fired it past Mascaro for her first career collegiate goal. Candice Moxley notched a short handed goal to end senior Rachel Barrie's shutout streak of 163 minutes and 5 seconds. With under a minute to play in the second, Heather Maracle intercepted a St. Lawrence pass and rifled the puck to Moxley who took off into the Saints zone. Moxley, on a breakaway, was able to put the puck past Barrie to end the shutout. The Purple Eagles started to make things interesting in the third. With just over eight minutes gone in the period, Michelle Del Monte pulled Niagara within two. Maracle rifled a pass to Del Monte in the left circle. Del Monte took the puck, skated to her right and fired on the goal, putting the puck past Barrie. Doyle gave the Saints a three-goal cushion five minutes later. Berlinguette brought down the left side in the Niagara zone. She rifled a cross ice pass to Doyle in the right circle and Doyle blasted the puck past Mascaro to put the Saints up 5-2. Barrie finished with 25 saves. Her shutout mark of 163:05 ranks as the longest in Saints Division I history. Mascaro finished with 31 stops in net for the Purple Eagles. The Saints return to league action and continue their record 10-game homestand as the Vermont Catamounts travel to Canton. "We've had to tough series back-to-back, a big series with Brown and then a physical series with Niagara," Flanagan said. "We've got 12 leagues games left and we need to get as many wins as possible. We need to pick up a head of steam heading into the Dartmouth and Harvard series." SAINTS BLANK PURPLE EAGLES, WIN 4-0 Jan. 23: The Saints (13-5-1) netted four goals, but in the end only needed one to beat the Niagara Purple Eagles (4-14-3) 4-0 at Appleton Arena tonight. Freshman Chelsea Grills scored the game-winner and senior Rachel Barrie registered her 13th career shutout and second consecutive. Tonight's win marks number 99 for head coach Paul Flanagan. After playing to a scoreless first period, Grills opened up the scoring with just over a minute gone in the second period. Sophomore Laurie Ross slid the puck to Rebecca Russell who fired off a shot from the left side of the goal. Niagara goalie Allison Rutledge stopped the shot, but the puck rebounded back out to Russell. Again, Russell fired on the net but Rutledge came up with the stop. This time the puck rebounded straight in front to a waiting Grills. The rookie from Stittsville, Ontario slipped the puck past Rutledge for her eighth goal of the season. "We played tentative in the first period. Niagara played how we expected them to, they were physical and in our face," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "Niagara made us exploit our strengths tonight - controling the puck, using our speed and skill. Kate's goal really broke it open for us tonight," said Flanagan. Just four minutes later, freshman Elisabeth Pahler would net her first career collegiate goal. Sophomore Emilie Berlinguette took the puck into the Niagara zone and passed it to senior Rickie-Lee Doyle. Doyle took a shot, but it was blocked by a Niagara defenseman. Pahler collected the loose puck and fired it into the top of the net past Rutledge. Minutes later, Erin Toth stole the puck for the Purple Eagles. Toth took one step and was off on a breakaway. Barrie came up with a huge pad save to keep the shutout intact. The save killed any momentum Niagara had heading into the intermission. Doyle sealed the game for the Saints with a short-handed goal with under two minutes to play. Sophomore Tracy Muzerall was in the box for cross-checking and the Purple Eagles were on the power play. Thirty seconds in, Niagara turned the puck over in the Saints end. Berlinguette scooped up the loose puck and took off down the ice. Instead of firing it into the corner for a shift change, she slid it to an on-coming Doyle. Doyle fired the puck from the left circle into the net for the final goal of the night. Barrie finished with 20 saves in her fourth shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. Her four shutouts this season, ties the Saints Division I record for shutouts in a season. Rutledge finished with 25 saves. Barrie registered back-to-back shutouts for the first time since the 2001-2002 season when the Wayne State Warriors were held scoreless on Jan. 12 and Jan. 13. Senior Rickie-Lee Doyle and freshman Chelsea Grills were named to the honor roll. Doyle scored three goals and added an assist in the weekend series with Brown. SAINTS EXPLODE FOR EIGHT GOALS, BARRIE NETS 12TH CAREER SHUTOUT Jan 17: When the Saints (12-5-1, 5-1-0) took the ice this afternoon, they looked like they were on a mission. They seemed out to prove to the Brown Bears (8-5-2, 4-1-1) how good of a hockey team they are. That message rang through loud and clear. Seven different Saints put the puck in the net this afternoon to lead St. Lawrence to an 8-0 victory over Brown. Sophomore Emilie Berlinguette started the scoring early. Sophomore Laurie Ross fired a shot on net from the right circle, but it was blocked by a Bear defenseman. Senior Rickie-Lee Doyle picked up the loss puck and passed it to Berlinguette who stuck it past Katie Germain for the score, with just 38 seconds off the clock. Three minutes later, Doyle would get her first goal of the game. Freshman Elisabeth Pahler took a shot at the Bear net, but Germain came up with the save. Doyle fired on the rebound, but again Germain came up with the save. Doyle scooped up the loose puck and this time put it past Germain. Senior Sara Simard got in on the action with ten minutes to go in the period. Juniors Whitney Carbone and Christin Powers both got off shots at the Bear goal, but the puck rebounded back out. Simard slid the loose puck into the net amid a scramble in front of Germain. With Ashlee Drover in the penalty box for holding, the Saints went on the power play. Junior Rebecca Russell put the Saints up 4-0 two minutes later. Russell and senior Gina Kingsbury played keep away with the puck down in the Brown zone. Kingsbury took a shot at the net, but the Germain batted the shot down. Russell collected the loose puck from behind the net. She skated around the back of the net and tucked the puck behind Germain for her fourth power play goal of the season. Down by four goals, coach Murphy pulled Germain and put in Marie-Pier Desbiens. Doyle got her second goal of the night with just three minutes gone in the second and Myria Heinhuis in the box for obstruction-interference. Ross and sophomore Kate Michael picked up the assists. From just outside the left circle, Doyle fired on net and zoomed the puck past Desbiens. With just over five minutes to play in the period, Kingsbury and Russell went to work again. Russell slid the puck to Kingsbury who was at the top of the left circle. Kingsbury fired on goal and put the puck past Desbiens in the top of the net. Desbiens went back to the bench and Murphy put Germain back in. Freshman Nicole Mandras would score her first career collegiate goal with six minutes gone in the third to put the Saints up 7-0. Freshman Crystal Connors skipped the puck to Mandras just outside the crease. Mandras slipped it past Germain for the score. Michael put the final nail in the coffin with under three minutes to play. Freshman Kim Kodatsky dropped the puck to Michael who was directly in front of the net. Michael put the puck past Germain for her third goal of the season. Senior goalie Rachel Barrie made some spectacular saves on the way to her 12th career shutout. She made 40 saves on the night. Germain finished with 16 saves and Desbiens finished with five. The Saints will remain at home next weekend as the Niagara Purple Eagles come to town for the Saints final non-conference series of the season. BEARS SCORE THREE THIRD PERIOD GOALS, WIN 5-4 Jan 16: The Brown Bears (8-4-2, 4-0-1) scored three third period goals to storm back for the 5-4 win over the St. Lawrence Saints (11-5-2, 4-1-0) in an ECAC tilt at Appleton Arena tonight. Freshman Abbie Bullard put the Saints on the board with just 29 seconds gone in the game. Freshman Chelsea Grills skated the puck into the Bears zone and dropped it to senior Gina Kingsbury. Kingsbury flipped the puck up into the air and Grills brought it back down, slidding it to Bullard. Bullard fired it past Katie Germain for her second goal of the season. Brown knotted the score with under six minutes to play in the period. Krissy McManus skated into the Saints end and fired the puck at senior goalie Rachel Barrie. Barrie blocked the shot, but the puck skidded back out. This time McManus put the puck past Barrie to tie the game. With under three minutes to go before intermission, Grills put the Saints back up on top. Kingsbury passed the puck to Grills who slipped it past Germain amid a scramble in front of the Brown net. Keaton Zucker would knot the score again for the Bears to open the second period. Jessica Link skipped the puck to Lindsay Glennon who fired on the goal. The shot was blocked, but Zucker cleaned up the rebound to tie the game. Ninety seconds later, senior Rickie-Lee Doyle gave the Saints the lead for the third time. Sophomore Emilie Berlinguette slid the puck to freshman Elisabeth Pahler. Pahler dropped the puck to Doyle who fired it into the top of the net for her fourth goal of the season. Freshman Casey Hughes notched her first career collegiate goal one minute later. Junior Christin Powers passed the puck to junior Whitney Carbone. Carbone dropped the puck to Hughes who slipped it past Germaine to put the Saints on top 4-2. The Bears came out firing in the third period. With sophomore Tracy Muzerall in the penalty box for cross-checking, the Bears went on the power play. Zucker took the puck into the Saints end and passed it to Margaret Ramsay. Ramsay slid the puck to Link who fired it past Barrie to pull the Bears within one. Two minutes later, Glennon would knot the score. McManus tipped the puck to an oncoming Katie Lafleur. Lafleur brought the puck near the Saints net. Lafleur slid the puck in front of the net where Glennon pushed into the goal to tie the game. With under four minutes to play, both teams were looking to score. Brown was the team that did. Katie Guay scored the winning goal at 16:16. She took a pass from Kerry Nugent and fired it into the Saints goal. With time winding down, the Saints went on the offensive and the power play. Myria Heinhuis went into the box at 18:23 for body checking. With the player advantage the Saints kept the puck in the Bears zone. At 19:12, Barrie raced to the bench and an extra skater took the ice. Unfortunately for the Saints, the two player advantage and a flurry of shots were not enough. The Bears managed to hang on for their come from behind victory. Barrie finished with 25 saves and Germain finished with 23. Freshman forward Chelsea Grills was named to the honor roll. Russell scored the gamewinner, a powerplay goal, in the Saints 1-0 win over North Dakota Friday night. On Saturday, Russell notched a hat trick and added to two assists to lead the Saints to a 6-2 victory over North Dakota. Her first goal of the night turned out to be the game winner. She also had a power play goal. The five point effort is a career high for the junior. This marks the second time in her career that the Clarenville, Newfoundland native has notched a hat trick. Barrie stopped 38 of 40 shots in the weekend series versus North Dakota. She notched her 11th career shutout, making 21 saves in the Saints 1-0 win Friday night. Barrie is the Division I career leader in shutouts at St. Lawrence. Grills notched a goal and two assists in the Saints 6-2 victory over North Dakota Saturday night. Her three point effort is a career high. RUSSELL NETS HAT TRICK, SAINTS WIN 6-2 Jan. 9: Junior Rebecca Russell netted a hat trick to lead the Saints (11-4-1) over the Fighting Sioux of North Dakota (5-13-2) by a score of 6-2. Russell also chipped in two assists on the night. Senior Gina Kingsbury put the Saints on the board early. Freshman Chelsea Grills skated the puck into the North Dakota zone, dropping it off to Russell. Russell took the puck and slid it to Kingsbury who put it past goalie Margaret-Ann Hinkley. Less than two minutes later, senior Sherrie White would knot the score at 1-1 with a power play goal. Kate Michael went to the box for a cross-checking penalty. Devon Fingland slipped the puck to Liz Funk Funk took the puck into Saints territory and passed it to White. White fired the puck past St. Lawrence goalie Rachel Barrie. Grills put the Saints back on top with 12 minutes gone in the period. Russell and freshman Casey Hughes chipped in assists on Grills sixth goal of the season. Russell pushed the lead to two with her first goal of the night five minutes later. Kingsbury and Laurie Ross added assists on the goal. Amber Yorga would cut the lead to just one with nine minutes gone in the second period. The Saints were on the power play, but they turned the puck over late. Yorga took the puck and slipped it past Barrie to pull the score to 3-2. The Saints came out firing in the third period, scoring three goals on their first four shots. Junior Christin Powers scored her second goal of the season with five minutes gone. Ross chipped in her second assist on Powers' goal. Two minutes later, on the power play, Russell would net her second goal of the night. Kingsbury added her second assist and freshman Abbie Bullard also had a helper. Russell closed out the scoring for the Saints with over 11 minutes gone in the third period. Grills slid the puck to Kingsbury who fired on the North Dakota goal. Hinkley stopped the shot, but the puck bounced back out. Russell slipped the puck past Hinkley to complete the hat trick. The Saints improve to 11-4-1 on the season, having won four straight and seven of their last eight. Next weekend, the Saints host the Brown Bears in an ECAC match-up. Game time for Friday night is set for 7:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. SAINTS BLANK FIGHTING SIOUX 1-0 Jan. 9: Junior Rebecca Russell scored the lone goal to lift the Saints (10-4-1) over the visiting Fighting Sioux of North Dakota (5-12-2). Senior goalie Rachel Barrie stopped 23 shots to earn her 11th career shutout. With North Dakota's Devon Fingland in the penalty box for hooking, the Saints went on the power play. Russell took a pass from senior forward Sara Simard and slipped it past Fighting Sioux netminder Margaret-Ann Hinkley. North Dakota had its share of opportunities to even the score, but the Fighting Sioux couldn't get the puck past Barrie. The Saints were able to fend off an attempt at a late rallly by North Dakota. St. Lawrence was able to keep the puck in the offensive zone for most of the last 90 seconds, keeping Hinkley on the ice. She finally made it off with 21 seconds remaining, but to no avail. The Saints and the Fighting Sioux will meet again tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. at Appleton Arena. St. Lawrence will look to sweep its opponent for just the third time this season. SAINTS SET TO TANGLE WITH NORTH DAKOTA Jan. 9: As the Saints (9-4-1) gear up for the second half of the season, they return home to kickoff a 10 game home stand. After playing 10 of 14 games on the road to start the season, the road-weary Saints return to the friendly confines of Appleton Arena. The ten straight road games and the ten straight home games this season both set team records. BARRIE NAMED HOCKEY HUMANITARIAN AWARD NOMINEE Jan. 2: The Hockey Humanitarian nominees were announced today and senior goalie Rachel Barrie was among them. The Arnprior, Ontario native is the only female on the list to be a repeat nominee. Joining Barrie from the ECAC are Chelsea Loughran, a senior at Brown University, Jamie Laubisch, a senior at Union College, Rob Fried, a senior at Harvard University and Trevor Edwards, a senior at Clarkson University. The award is open to any division I-III male or female NCAA college hockey player, who best exemplifies personal character, a commitment to studies, and whose contributions to his/her larger community is worthy of attention. Indeed, the candidates this annual award honors are not just a group of terrific athletes, they represent future leaders in education, business, and our communities, people who may well become our childrens teachers, employers, and neighbors. It has always been the belief of the Foundation that there needs to be room in our lives for both games and responsibility and that the men and women recognized by the Humanitarian Award are really the kind of individuals our kids should be looking up to. In the end, they claim, it is not about how many times you touch the puck, but often you touch a life. Last years Hockey Humanitarian recipient was Cornells Sam Paolini. He was the first ECAC Division I recipient although Kristine Pierce earned the honor for ECAC Division III team Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1999. The finalists will be announced on January 15th at 1 p.m. The finalists will be honored at home games between January and February and the presentation of the Humanitarian Award will take place April 9th at the NCAA Frozen Four. BARRIE NAMED ECAC GOALIE AND NATIONAL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Dec. 8- Senior goalie Rachel Barrie earned ECAC and National Player of the Week honors for her performance in the Saints' sweep at #7 Princeton last weekend. St. Lawrence visited a Princeton team featuring the nation's top goal scorer and one of the nation's best power plays. The Tigers managed just two goals over the weekend thanks largely to Barrie. She was named ECAC Goalie of the Week Monday afternoon and US College Hockey On Line named Barrie as its national defensive player of the week on Tuesday night. Playing in her 100th game for the Saints Friday night, Barrie allowed just one goal on 24 shots as St. Lawrence defeated Princeton 2-1, earning her 60th career win. The following day, Barrie allowed one goal on 36 shots in the Saints' 3-1 win. Barrie was at her best in the clutch. She stopped 24 of 25 shots total for the two third periods and kept Princeton scoreless on nine power plays on the weekend. She is 9-4-1 this season with a 2.19 goals against average and a .920 save percentage. Senior forward Gina Kingsbury was named to the Honor Roll. Kingsbury scored both of the Saints goals Friday night in the 2-1 win at #7 Princeton. The following day, Kingsbury scored the game winner in the Saints' 3-1 win at Princeton. She extends her point streak to six games. She has netted seven goals and six assists for 13 points in the last six games. Kingsbury was named the US College Hockey On Line Player of the Week runner-up. SAINTS SWEEP TIGERS, WIN 3-1 Dec. 6 - Sophomore forward Emilie Berlinguette scored two goals for St. Lawrence and senior goalie Rachel Barrie made 35 saves as the Saints (9-4-1 overall, 4-0-0 ECAC) got their second-straight win over Princeton at Baker Rink, topping the Tigers (7-5-0, 2-3-0), 3-1, tonight. St. Lawrence started off strong thanks to an early Princeton penalty. After Tigers' sophomore forward Becky Stewart went to the penalty box for body-checking at 3:16 of the first period, Berlinguette scored her first goal of the game, taking a pass from senior forward Rickie-Lee Doyle and pushing a wrist shot past senior goalie Megan Van Beusekom's right skate for a 1-0 lead. Nearly eight minutes later, senior forward Gina Kingsbury, who scored both goals in the Saints' 2-1 win Friday night, struck again on a wraparound on a power play at 11:16, just twelve seconds after the Tiger penalty. The Princeton offense picked up late in the second period, but neither team scored in the middle frame. Kingsbury, who was injured late in the first period, played only one shift in the second before returning to regular action in the third. |
