FOUR SAINTS LAND IN TOP TEN AT 2007 "CARDINAL CLASSIC" Sept. 1: The St. Lawrence University women’s cross country team opened their 2007 season at Plattsburgh State’s “Cardinal Classic” on Saturday. The Saints had four runners finish in the top-10, including graduate student Elizabeth Ludovici and sophomore Johannah Ludington, and finished in 2nd place in the meet.
Ludovici missed last the 2006 cross country season, as she chose to study abroad for a semester. However, the Lyons Falls, NY native showed her poise and consistency by leading the Saints in her return with a 3rd place overall finish behind a time of 18:55. Ludington, the 2006 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, was 10 seconds behind ( 19:05) in 4th place.
First year student Wendy Pavlus wasted little time getting into the scoring for the Scarlet and Brown, as the Tupper Lake, NY native placed 6th overall in her first collegiate meet. Pavlus ran in a time of 19:20, placing her two spots ahead of sophomore Chelsea Nuffer, who finished in 8th position overall with a time of 19:52.
Rookie Chelsea McKenzie was next for St. Lawrence, which finished behind the hosting Plattsburgh State Cardinals. McKenzie raced in a time of 21:08, landing her in 13th place overall.
Also competing for the Saints in the 2007 season opener were sophomore Hilary St. John (14th, 21:30) and junior Lyndsey Bisaccio (15th, 21:54).
“I’m very pleased with the times today, and are excited to see two of our rookies getting into the scoring,” said Saints head coach Deb Lyndaker. “ Elizabeth continues to be a leader for our program, while Johannah and Chelsea each have a solid year of competition under their belts.”
St. Lawrence (34) finished ten points behind the Cardinals (24), while Clarkson University took third place with 81 points and Johnson State took fourth position with 120 points.
The Saints will be in action again a week from today when they host the 2007 St. Lawrence University Alumni Race on Saturday, September 8th.
SAINTS LOOK TO CONTINUE LIBERTY LEAGUE DOMINANCE IN 2007 Aug. 30: When the 2007 St. Lawrence University women’s cross country team steps to the starting line at the Plattsburgh State “Cardinal Classic” on Saturday morning, the squad will be looking to take their first steps towards a sixth straight Liberty League championship.
“Winning our conference is certainly one of our primary goals every year,” said Saints coach Deb Lyndaker, who enters her seventh season as head coach of the women’s cross country team. “Our string of victories in our league is something we’re very proud of and something we’ll work very hard to continue.”
Though the Saints are without standout runner and 2006 Liberty League Champion Laura Clarke, who graduated in the spring, the team welcomes back graduate student Elizabeth Ludovici. Ludovici, who was studying abroad in Spain last fall, returns to the women’s cross country team coming off of an outstanding spring track season that included a victory in the 3000m Steeplechase at the ECAC Championships.
“We are obviously thrilled to have Elizabeth back this season to serve as both a team captain, but also a strong leader on the course,” said Coach Lyndaker.
Joining Ludovici will be a pair of sophomores, Chelsea Nuffer and Johannah Ludington, who both got their cross country careers off to a great start in 2006. Ludington was named the Liberty League’s Rookie of the Year last season, having been named Rookie of the Week six times. She was the third place finisher and top rookie in the conference meet and was 18 th in the NYSCTC Championships. Nuffer also left her mark as a first year student, as the Beaver Falls, NY native won the Hoffmann Invitational last season.
Coming into 2007, Coach Lyndaker also added Wendy Pavlus from Tupper Lake, NY, who hopes to add consistency and depth to the roster. Pavlus ran 2 nd place in the New York State Class D State Championships in Cross Country, and won the state Small School Division 2000m Steeplechase last spring.
“Chelsea and Johannah will be key to our success this season as they’re both coming off great rookie years,” said Lyndaker. “Adding Wendy also gives us another strong competitor, and we’ll be looking for her to score for us on a regular basis.”
The Saints will also look to senior co-captain Lyndsay Bisaccio and sophomore Hilary St. John to offer consistent times throughout the 2007 campaign, which begins at 11:00am on Saturday afternoon at Plattsburgh State.
“We’re very excited to get underway at Plattsburgh on Saturday, while our first intense meet will come at NYU for the Pre-Regionals on September 15th,” added Lyndaker.
