May 29: The St. Lawrence University women's crew team arrived safely in California on Tuesday, and used their time on Wednesday rigging the boats and practicing in the afternoon before competition gets underway at the 2008 NCAA Women's Crew Championships on Friday.
The afternoon practice session was open to all of the competing Division I, II and III teams. St. Lawrence University Director of Rowing Nick Hughes was pleased with the team's practice session before competing in the national championships for the first time in the program's nine year history.
"I thought we had very solid practice rows this afternoon on a beautiful day with the temperature in the low 70's," said Hughes. "With low humidity and light winds, a very impressive site allows for a specatculor race course."
The 2008 NCAA Women's Crew Championships are set to begin tomorrow, Friday, May 30 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, CA. The event is hosted by The University of California Berkeley. To visit the official NCAA Women's Crew Championship site, click here.
TEAM EARNS FIRST EVER BID TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS May 13: The NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Committee announced the teams that will compete in the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Rowing Championships on Tuesday, and for the first time in program history, the St. Lawrence University women’s crew team is one of seven squads to be selected for the highly competitive championship.
The championships are comprised of seven teams with each fielding two boats of eight rowers and a coxswain, in addition to two teams with one at-large entry. Williams, the defending Division III champion, earned an automatic bid, while St. Lawrence, as well as Puget Sound, Trinity (CT), Ithaca, Bates, and William Smith each earned a team berth. Varsity Eights from the United States Coast Guard Academy and Washington (MD) were at large-bids into the championships.
The Saints, who have been nationally-ranked throughout much of their spring season, have enjoyed their most successful season to date after the team captured their first ever Liberty League title in late April, led by the No. 6 Varsity Eight crew’s victory.
The Varsity Eight went undefeated throughout much of their season, extending their winning streak to seven before placing second at the New York State Championships behind No. 4 Ithaca College, who they had defeated earlier in the year. The crew finished fifth at the ECAC National Invitational Collegiate Regatta this past weekend, their best finish ever.
The NCAA Championships will be held May 30 through June 1 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, California. The University of California, Berkeley, will serve as host.
