VARSITY 8 NAMED CONFERENCE

BOAT OF THE WEEK

May 6: For the fourth time this season, the St. Lawrence University Women’s Varsity 8 boat earned Liberty League ‘Boat of the Week’ honors after another successful weekend at the New York State Collegiate Rowing Championships.

 

St. Lawrence's fifth-ranked Women's Varsity 8 crew finished second over the weekend at the Championships in Whitney Point, NY. The crew defeated Skidmore, Binghamton, Army, Albany and RPI on Day 1 to earn a spot in the grand final on Sunday, where they earned the silver medal, finishing ahead of nationally-ranked William Smith, as well as Rochester, Skidmore and Hamilton.

 

Saints in the first varsity 8 included junior Michelle Hicks (Austin, TX/St. Stephen’s), sophomore Jane Connolly (New Canaan, CT/St. Luke’s), first-year Lizzy Stokes-Cawley (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), junior Allie Friedman (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary), sophomore Amelia Bell (Portland, OR/Grant), senior Kate Olsen (Muncy, PA/Muncy), sophomore Eloise LaChance (Philmont, NY/Taconic Hills), senior Amanda Dudley (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool), and senior coxswain Renee Rubin (South Burlington, VT/South Burlington).

 

The Saints will look forward to racing in this upcoming weekend’s ECAC National Invitational, which will be held in Worcester, MA on Saturday, May 10.

 

TWO BOATS MEDAL IN FINAL DAY OF

NYS CHAMPIONSHIPS

May 4: The St. Lawrence University women’s crew team continued to race strong in the second and final day of the New York State Championships on Sunday, as two crews medaled in their races in Whitney Point, NY.

 

The No. 5 Varsity 8 boat’s undefeated streak ended at seven, as they placed second behind nationally-ranked Ithaca College, who the Saints defeated earlier in the season. The Bombers came in with a time of 7:06.9 to earn the gold medal, while the Saints crossed the finish line second at 7:11.4, good enough for the silver. Rochester placed third (7:12.2) while William Smith, also nationally-ranked, came in fourth (7:16.7). Skidmore and Hamilton rounded out the race, with the Thoroughbreds coming in fifth (7:21.7) and the Continentals came in sixth (7:25).

St. Lawrence’s Novice Four crew also earned the silver medal in their race, as the Saints finished just behind NYU, who crossed the finish line at 8:15.5. St. Lawrence’s time of 8:19.9 earned them second place points, while Union came in third at 8:23.8, just ahead of Army’s boat, who clocked in at 8:24.2. Skidmore finished fifth (8:49) while Hamilton finished sixth (9:07.2).

 

The boat included first-years Erin Panek (Natick, MA/Natick), Catie LePage, Britne Tyler (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Maggie Wiener (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr School for Girls) and coxswain Lauren Reed (Cortland, NY/Cortland).

 

The Second Varsity 8 earned a spot in the grand final of their race on Saturday and finished sixth overall in Sunday’s final. Ithaca’s “A” crew finished first (7:10.1) while Rochester (7:15.2) and William Smith (7:18.7) rounded out the top three, respectively. The Bomber’s “B” boat came in fourth (7:20.8), while Skidmore edge the Saints by four-tenths of a second to earn the fifth place spot (7:24.1), while the Saints finished with a time of 7:24.5.

 

Racing in the second varsity boat was sophomore Katie Roy (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood School), senior Ann Seyse (Scotia, NY/Scotia Glenville), sophomore Tara Hetz (Charlotte, VT/Champlain Valley Union), junior Karen Wilcox (Ellenburg Depot, NY/Northern Adirondack), sophomore Erin Hussey (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford), junior Jackie Costas (Greenwich, CT/Convent of the Sacred Heart) sophomores Brianna Kehl (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and Amelia Lalley (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca) and senior coxswain Caroline Hannigan (New Rochelle, NY/School of the Holy Child).

On Saturday, Sophomores Corrie Mersereau ( Corinth, NY/The King’s School) and Heather Demers ( Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union) rowed together for the first time as a pair and medaled in the Women’s pair timed final event after placing third. NYU took home the gold with a 9:26.6, while USMMA came in at 9:40.2. The Saints came in at 10:43.2, more than a minute ahead of Clarkson (11:56.1).

 

The Saints will look forward to racing in next weekend’s ECAC National Invitational, which will be held in Worcester, MA on Saturday, May 10.

 

THREE CREWS ADVANCE TO GRAND FINALS

AT NEW YORK STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

May 3: Day one of the New York State Championships proved to be an exciting one for the St. Lawrence University women’s crew team on Saturday morning in Whitney Point, NY, as the Saints’ Varsity 8 boat remained undefeated in 2008 after winning their heat, while the Novice Four earned a victory in their heat and the Second Varsity 8 took a second place finish as all three crews earned a lane in the grand final of each race.

 

The No. 5 Varsity 8 boat, who is the top seed in the event, won their heat with a time of 7:42.4, ahead of Rochester (7:44.4), Liberty League opponent Skidmore (7:50.2), Binghamton (8:06), Army (8:44.4) Albany (9:43) and Rensselaer (11:01), earning them their seventh straight win of the season and a spot in the coveted grand final, which also includes nationally-ranked squads from Ithaca, the winner of the other heat with a time of 7:37.2, as well as William Smith, who finished second at 7:47.6. Others in tomorrow’s heat include Rochester, Hamilton, and Skidmore.

The Second Varsity 8 crew raced in the second heat of the event, placing second behind Rochester, who clocked in at a winning time of 8:15.3. The Saints, who finished at 8:27.1, defeated Skidmore (8:46.2) and Hamilton (9:19.2). The crew will face the winner of the first heat, Ithaca’s “A” boat (8:11.2), as well as William Smith, Ithaca “B”, Rochester and Skidmore in tomorrow’s grand final.

St. Lawrence’s Novice Four boat also had an impressive showing, winning their heat with a time of 10:12.1, well ahead of opponents NYU, Skidmore, Albany, and Sarah Lawrence, with NYU coming the closest, crossing the finish line at 10:12.1. With the win, the Saints earned a spot in the grand final and will race Army, Union, Hamilton Skidmore, and Albany. The boat included first-years Erin Panek (Natick, MA/Natick), Catie LePage, Britne Tyler (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary), Maggie Wiener (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr School for Girls) and coxswain Lauren Reed (Cortland, NY/Cortland).
