VARSITY EIGHT EARNS WEEKLY CONFERENCE ACCOLADES Apr. 14: The St. Lawrence University women’s crew team was named Liberty League Boat of the Week on Monday after defeating No. 5 Ithaca College on Saturday.
The Saints defeated the Bombers' on their home course in the grand final with a time of 6:48.6, just ahead of Ithaca's 6:49.7. The Saints earned the spot in the final after defeating Skidmore College by ten seconds in an earlier heat. The Bombers defeated Hamilton by a 15-second margin for their place in the final with St. Lawrence.
Going into the race, Ithaca's boat was ranked first in the New York region and fifth in the country in Division III, according to the CRCA/USRowing Division III National Coaches’ Poll.
Rochester Institute of Technology also raced in the weekend’s regatta.
The Scarlet and Brown will host two duals this weekend, racing the Continentals on Saturday and Union College on Sunday. Both race days are set to begin at 9:00am in Waddington, NY.
VARSITY EIGHT DEFEATS NATIONALLY-RANKED ITHACA Apr. 13: The St. Lawrence women’s crew team had outstanding races this weekend down in Ithaca, NY, including a victory in the grand final of the varsity eight race, edging No. 5 Ithaca College by just over a second in the 2,000-meter piece on the Cayuga Inlet on Saturday.
Other teams racing on Saturday were conference opponents Hamilton and Skidmore, as well as the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Saints in the victorious boat included junior Michelle Hicks (Austin, TX/St. Stephen’s), sophomore Jane Connolly (New Canaan, CT/St. Luke’s), first-year Lizzy Stokes-Cawley (Skaneateles, NY/Skaneateles), junior Allie Friedman (Buffalo, NY/Buffalo Seminary),
Ithaca ’s varsity eight was ranked first in Division III Regional Rankings for New York and fifth in the country according to the CRCA/USRowing Division III National Coaches Poll heading into the race, while the Saints were ranked third in New York before crossing the finish line first.
In the first heat of the day for the boat, St. Lawrence defeated Liberty League opponent Skidmore College by a ten-second margin, a win that sent the Saints to the grand final, while also having a significant impact on regional rankings, with the Thoroughbreds ranked second in New York before Saturday’s race.
Ithaca defeated Hamilton by 15 seconds in the other heat to earn their spot in the grand final, where both the Bombers and the Saints raced for the win. In what many would refer to as a photo-finish race, the Scarlet and Brown won with a 6:48.6, while the Bombers came in just over a second behind, finishing with a time of 6:49.7.
The Saints’ second varsity boat raced in the first heat of the morning, coming in behind Ithaca’s second varsity and RIT’s first to earn a spot in the petite final with a time of 7:26.5.
The boat had a much better race in their second piece of the day, winning the petite final with a time of 7:24, well ahead of conference opponents Hamilton and Skidmore.
Racing in the second varsity boat was sophomore Heather Demers (Shelburne, VT/Champlain Valley Union), senior Ann Seyse (Scotia, NY/Scotia Glenville), sophomore Katie Roy (Lake Placid, NY/Northwood School), junior Karen Wilcox (Ellenburg Depot, NY/Northern Adirondack), sophomores Erin Hussey (Biddeford, ME/Biddeford), Amelia Lalley (Ithaca, NY/Ithaca), and Brianna Kehl (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna), junior Jackie Costas (Greenwich, CT/Convent of the Sacred Heart), and senior coxswain Caroline Hannigan (New Rochelle, NY/School of the Holy Child).
The women’s novice four raced to a first-place finish as well, taking a commanding lead early on in the piece, winning their heat in a time of 8:22.1, 22 seconds ahead of Skidmore and 46 seconds ahead of the Bombers. The boat included first-years Erin Panek (Natick, MA/Natick), Catie LePage, sophomore Tara Hetz (Charlotte, VT/Champlain Valley Union), Maggie Wiener (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr School for Girls) and first-year coxswain Lauren Reed (Cortland, NY/Cortland).
The Scarlet and Brown will host two Liberty League opponents next weekend, racing the Hamilton Continentals on Saturday and the Union Dutchwomen on Sunday. Races are scheduled to begin at 9:00am on the St. Lawrence River in Waddington, NY.
