VARSITY KICKS OFF SEASON WITH SOLID FINISHES AT HEAD OF GENESEE

Oct. 9: The St. Lawrence women’s varsity crew team opened up their 2007-2008 campaign on Sunday in Rochester, NY, competing at the Head of the Genesee Regatta, where the Saints’ two evenly-matched 8 boats faired well against both Liberty League and ECAC competitors.

The Saints’ B boat finished with a 19:35.48 in the 5000m head race in the morning and maintained their position amongst the field, which included boats from all divisions as well as club boats, after the sprint piece with a time of 5:37.79. Saints in the B boat consisted of sophomore Jane Connolly, sophomore Heather Demers, senior Erin Hussey, first-year Margaret Wiener, sophomore Briana Kehl, sophomore Amelia Bell, senior Amanda Dudley, sophomore Amelia Lalley and senior coxswain Caroline Hannigan.

Saints’ A boat didn’t place far behind with an overall time of 19:50.58 in the morning. The team had a 5:31.41 in the sprint race, but also incurred a ten-second penalty for a lane violation. Saints in the A boat included sophomore Kate Roy, senior Ann Seyse, first-year Madeline Barnhard, junior Karen Wilcox, senior Kate Olsen, sophomore Corrie Mersereau, sophomore Eloise LaChance, junior Jackie Costas, and senior coxswain Renee Rubin.

Both St. Lawrence 8 boats were in the top ten among their NCAA Division III competitors at the regatta.

"I think both boats were pleased with their AM rows, where the ratings, duration and intensity were more in line with our training this fall,” says Nick Hughes, the Director of Rowing at St. Lawrence and the women’s head coach.  “The 1500-meter pieces seemed a tad frantic, but we've got time to build our effectiveness and efficiency at those higher ratings before the sprint races that really matter.  Still, I think the women enjoyed spinning it up a bit and getting after it over the short course.”

Overall, Hughes was happy with how well both boats competed. "We've prioritized a depth of speed this fall and I think our results this weekend demonstrated that,” he says.  “To field two eights that posted times competitive with and in some cases better than the 1V crews we'll be racing in the spring is an encouraging sign of the progress we've made."

Both the women’s varsity and novice teams will travel to Geneva, NY this weekend to compete in the Hobart William Smith Challenge on Saturday, October 13th.
