WOMEN 26th PLACE AT

HEAD OF THE CHARLES REGATTA

Oct. 22: St. Lawrence University’s women’s varsity crew team had one boat compete in the women’s collegiate 8 race on the 4,828-meter course at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston and placed 26th out of 44 teams on Sunday afternoon.

Rowers included sophomore Jane Connolly, seniors Anne Seyse and Kate Olsen, sophomores Eloise Lachance, Briana Kehl and Amelia Bell, senior Amanda Dudley, sophomore Amelia Lalley, and senior coxswain Renee Rubin.

The course length was 3 miles, all upstream, and involved going under seven bridges on the Charles River, but Head Coach Nick Hughes was impressed by Rubin’s skills that helped the boat maintain the desired speed. "Renee coxed a strong piece.  Her preparation for the race was evident in her clean, competitive line and a calm confidence that helped the crew maintain their focus in what has to be one of the more distracting race environments."

"The women were happy with their row,” said Hughes.  “The consensus was that it felt strong and powerful, as they were able to maintain their length and relaxation, despite a high level of effort and intensity.”

"Watching some of the other crews inside the last mile made it pretty clear that we under-stroked many of our competitors,” Hughes continued.  “If we had been more aggressive with the rating, we may have appreciated some marginal improvement in boat speed, but it may have been at the cost of the quality of our rowing.  That's not an attractive tradeoff for us at this point in our progression toward the spring season.  Still, given where our finish time locates us in our league and among our Division III competitors, I'm confident we'll be competitive in those races that really matter to us: the straight, 2000 meter ones.”

After the row, the head coach was very optimistic about what the group will be able to do in the future. "It's tempting to look at our lineup, which included five sophomores, and imagine how fast we could be in two years time, but I can assure you that the women in the program have no intention of biding their time.  We're focused on being fast this spring.”

The Head of the Charles began in 1965 with only 100 competitors who were all single rowers. In its 43 rd year, the Regatta, which is now the largest rowing race in the world, included 55 races, 1,736 boats, 8,220 competitors, and over 300,000 spectators.

The Saints will compete in their final race of the fall on Saturday, October 27th, at the Head of the Fish Regatta in Saratoga Springs, NY.
