SAINTS ENJOY RECORD-SETTING SEASON
St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team enjoyed one of the best seasons in the 29-year history of the sport at SLU in the fall of 2008 and with a roster which included no seniors and just three juniors, the gains in the first two seasons under head coach Melissa DeRan should continue.
The Saints set a record for victories in a 28-12 campaign, posted the second-best winning percentage in program history and had its best Liberty League finish since the formation o f the league. The Saints also had two first-team all league players for the first time in nearly 15 years and had three representatives on the 12-player team.
The 2008 Saints also set a number of team statistical records and several individuals on the team are in the top ten in career, season and match statistics. The Saints won one in-season tournament and were second in four others against very competitive teams in 2008 and included a pair of wins against eventual Liberty League champion and NCAA tournament representative Union among their wins.
Junior Jessica Lucky and sophomore Abby Rose were named to the Liberty League first-team all star squad. Lucky led the Saints in kills with 362 and had 456 digs and was a two-time Liberty League Player of the Week. Rose had 1200 assists, 86 service aces and was third on the team in digs with 447. First year Nyasha Miller, a four-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week, was named to the second-team all league squad and was second in kills with 307 and added 374 digs.
“I am very pleased with the progress our players have made over the last two seasons,” said DeRan. “We talk a lot about the difference between good seasons and good programs. It’s easy to have a good year, but it is tough to have a good program for the long term. The players understand that difference and are working very hard to build a great tradition of volleyball at SLU.”
