SAINTS ENJOY BEST SEASON THIS DECADE

St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team had the most wins since the 1993 season and its first .500 season since 2000 in 2007 under the guidance of coach Melissa DeRan and the team is looking forward to continued improvement as nine of 11 players from the current squad will return for next season.

The Saints went 19-19 for the year and made just the second NYSWCAA Championship appearance of the current decade, finishing ninth with a split of matches. The Saints also had strong showings during in-season tournaments at Scranton, winning the Purple Division with a 3-1 record and going 3-0 at the Oswego Round Robin. The 19 wins are the most for a Saint team since the 1993 team went 20-16 and the 19-19 record was the best since the 2000 team went 18-17.

Ranked through much of the season by the NYSWCAA the Saints will graduate middle hitter Kelly O’Connell and libero Tammy Couch, but return the rest of the team from the current season for next year and will augment the returnees with incoming first year players.

Sophomore Jessica Lucky (right) earned first team All Liberty League honors and was honorable mention All State for the Saints despite playing much of the season at less than 100 percent due to injury. She was named to all tournament teams at Plattsburgh, Scranton, the Liberty League-SUNYAC Challenge and at Skidmore. She led the team in kills with 407 and digs with 612.

First year Abby Rose (left) was named second team All Liberty League and was co-MVP in the season-opening Oneonta Invitational. Rose was three-time Liberty League Rookie of the Week and set the Saint record for service aces in a match with 14 in a match against Green Mountain College. Rose led the team with 1097 assists and 83 service aces and had 440 digs to go with 58 total blocks.

O’Connell had 217 kills and 68 total blocks, finishing second on the team in both categories while Couch was second in digs with 470.

First year Jordan Buzza, Liberty League Rookie of the Week for October 1, had 196 kills, was second in assists with 47 and had 39 total blocks while sophomore Julia Congdon had 213 kills, was second in service aces with 57 and had 446 digs. Sophomore Natalie Kurtz led in blocking with 101 total and sophomore Lara Gibbons was second in service aces with 60 and had 336 digs.

First year players Megan McNiven, Lauren Drozynski and Jennifer Collins also saw action for the Saints will compete for regular roles in the 2008 season.
