ODORCZUK, RANDALL EARN ALL-UCAA SELECTION; SAINTS SWEPT AT UCAA TOURNAMENT

November 9 - Diana Odorczuk was selected to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Tournament Team for her performance in the Saints four matches over the weekend. The Saints season ended this weekend with four three-game loses at the UCAA Tournament hosted by Clarkson on Friday and Saturday.

The Saints opened the tournament with loses to Clarkson and Vassar on Friday. Beth Patterson led the Saints with 12 kills and Serena Shallish added seven kills and four aces against Vassar. Patterson added 12 kills in the Saints loss to Clarkson, and Shallish had eight kills in the match. Odorczuk totalled seven kills and five blocks on Friday for the Saints.

The Saints were also swept on Saturday, falling to Skidmore in three games. Odorczuk had a great all-around match for the Saints, totalling eight kills, six blocks and 12 digs. Shallish added six kills and 15 digs, while Kristen Ross had 20 assists and 10 digs.

Union closed out the Saints season with a three-game sweep. Odorczuk contributed eight kills and five blocks, while Shallish had 10 kills, 12 digs and three aces. Rachel Lindstrand had 12 digs, and Anna Edwards and Ross combined for 26 assists.

The All-Conference Teams were announced at the tournament, and Odorczuk and sophomore middle hitter Grace Randall were both selected to the All-Conference team for the second consecutive year.

Vassar won the tournament with a 3-1 record, winning a tie-breaker with Union (also 3-1) because of a head-to-head win over the Dutchwomen.

The Saints finish the 2002 season with an 11-25 record. The team will have a five-week non-traditional season in the spring to begin working towards the 2003 season.

SAINTS BEAT POTSDAM FOR FOURTH TIME THIS YEAR

October 30 - After losing the first game of the night, the St. Lawrence University volleyball team battled back to take the next three games, beating Potsdam 3-1 in Maxcy Hall on Wednesday night.

The win marks the fourth time this season that the Saints have defeated Potsdam.

Diana Odorczuk led the Saints with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Beth Patterson added 11 kills and seven digs. Kristen Ross contributed 30 assists and 11 digs for the Saints, who improved to 11-21 on the season.

The Saints will wrap up the season with the UCAA Tournament beginning on November 8th at Clarkson.

SAINTS FALL TO CLARKSON IN FIVE ON SENIOR DAY

October 26 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team came back from a two-game deficit against north country rival Clarkson, but were unable to complete the comeback, losing to the Golden Knights 3-2 on senior day in Burkman Gymnasium.

Clarkson won the first two games 30-28, 30-23, but the Saints responded by winning a close third game 31-29, then beating the Golden Knights 30-15 to force a fifth and decisive game, which Clarkson won 15-8.

Diana Odorczuk, the lone senior on the team, led the Saints with 14 kills, 17 digs, six blocks and three aces. Grace Randall added a triple-double with 11 kills, 13 blocks, and 16 digs. Beth Patterson added 19 kills and 14 digs, while Serena Shallish contributed 15 kills, 17 digs and four aces.

Anna Edwards and Kristen Ross were both effective at the setter position for the Saints, with Edwards notching 31 assists and Ross adding 27.

The Saints fall to 10-21 on the season, and will compete in the UCAA Tournament on November 8th and 9th at Clarkson. The Golden Knights improve to 17-10.

SAINTS SPLIT MATCHES ON SECOND DAY OF OSWEGO INVITE

October 19 - After being swept on the opening day of the Oswego Invitational on Friday night, the St. Lawrence University volleyball team responded by beating Hartwick in three games for their tenth win of the season.

In their second match of the day, the Saints were swept by New Paltz. The Saints lost a four-game match to Geneseo to start the tournament on Friday, then lost to Fredonia in three games.

The Saints will host Clarkson at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Burkman Gymnasium for their final home match of the season.

SAINTS BEAT PURPLE KNIGHTS IN FOUR GAMES

October 15 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team lost a tough game one to St. Michael's on Tuesday night in Burkman Gymnasium, but responded by winning the next three games to beat the Purple Knights 3-1.

In the fourth and decisive game, Diana Odorczuk got the Saints out to a quick start by serving for nine consecutive points to give the Saints a 9-0 lead. St. Michael's cut the lead to two five times, but never got any closer as the Saints closed out the Purple Knights for the third consecutive game.

Odorczuk, who had team season-high nine aces in the match, had a great all-around game, contributing eight kills, six blocks and 18 digs. Serena Shallish led the Saints attack with 15 kills, while Grace Randall helped Odorczuk in the middle with 10 kills, five blocks and 18 digs.

Beth Patterson had 11 kills to help the offense, while Maricela Blair played well defensively, digging up 23 St. Michael's attacks. Junior setter Anna Edwards had 38 assists and three kills for the Saints.

Katie Herb led St. Michael's with 15 kills. Lindsey Shumway added 10 kills for the Purple Knights, while junior setter Heather Frame dished out 41 assists.

The Saints improved to 9-17, while St. Michael's falls to 8-11. The Saints will play in the Oswego Invitationalthis weekend.

SAINTS WIN GAME TWO, BUT LOSE TO CARDINALS

October 8 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team rebounded from a tough game one loss to Plattsburgh on Tuesday night with a 30-27 win in game two, but lost the next two games to lose 3-1 in a non-league match in Burkman Gymnasium.

The Saints were led by Diana Odorczuk who had nine kills, five blocks, seven aces and 15 digs in the match. Beth Patterson added 12 kills, while Maricela Blair had 18 digs for the Saints.

Grace Randall had seven kills, nine digs and six blocks for St. Lawrence, and Kristen Ross had 30 assists, 13 digs and three aces.

The Saints fell to 8-17 on the season, while Plattsburgh improved to 11-14. The Saints will host St. Michael's next Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

SAINTS WIN FIRST GAME, BUT LOSE THE REST IN PAIR OF LOSSES

October 5 - St. Lawrence University's volleyball team won their first game of the day, but was swept in the final six, as Rochester defeated the Saints 3-1 in the morning before St. John Fisher beat the Saints 3-0 in the afternoon.

St. John Fisher also beat Rochester in three games.

SHALLISH SHINES AS SAINTS SWEEP BEARS

October 2 - St. Lawrence University outside hitter Serena Shallish continued her strong play against Potsdam, notching 11 kills and 10 digs in a 30-20, 30-18, 30-27 win over the Bears in a non-league volleyball match on Wednesday night.

Shallish, a junior from Syracuse, NY, has been dominant against Potsdam this season, notching 41 kills in their three matches.

Grace Randall added eight kills and six blocks for the Saints, while fellow middle hitter Diana Odorczuk had 12 digs and was tough on the Bears from the service line, notching seven aces. Beth Patterson had seven kills for the Saints, while Kristen Ross contributed 30 assists, five kills and eight digs.

The Saints improved to 8-14 on the season. Potsdam fell to 4-18.

The Saints continue their seven-match homestand this weekend with a tri-match as Rochester and St. John Fisher will visit Canton on Saturday. The first match is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.

SAINTS BEAT MEDAILLE IN FIVE, FALL TO SKIDMORE

September 28 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team split matches on Saturday in Burkman Gymnasium, beating Medaille in five games before falling to Skidmore in three.

The Saints won the first two games against Medaille, but lost games three and four. St. Lawrence controlled game five, however, beating Medaille 15-11. Kristen Ross had 14 digs and 55 assists in the Medaille match, and Diana Odorczuk contributed nine kills, six blocks and four aces. Grace Randall added 15 kills and six blocks, Serena Shallish had 12 kills, and Rachel Lindstrand had 15 digs for the Saints.

In the Saints second match, Skidmore defeated the Saints 30-26, 30-23, 30-14. Randall led the Saints with eight kills and four blocks, Odorczuk contributed six kills and four blocks, and Beth Patterson had eight kills.

Skidmore defeated Medaille 30-22, 30-22, 30-26.

The Saints are now 7-14 on the season, and will host St. John Fisher and Rochester in another tri-match next Saturday.

SAINTS FALL TO KNIGHTS IN FOUR

September 24 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team lost to Clarkson in their first match last year last season, and the Golden Knights repeated their performance against the Saints this year, winning in four games in Potsdam on Tuesday night.

The Saints, however, rebounded to beat Clarkson twice last year, and will face the Golden Knights at least two more times this season.

Clarkson won the first game 30-26 on Tuesday night, but the Saints rebounded to win game two 30-27. The Golden Knights responded by taking the next two games 30-26, 30-25.

Clarkson improved to 10-4 with the win, while the Saints fell to 6-13. St. Lawrence hosts Medaille and Skidmore in a tri-match starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

ODORCZUK MAKES ALL-TOURNEY TEAM AS SAINTS SPLIT

September 21 - Diana Odorczuk made the All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive week as the St. Lawrence University volleyball team split their matches on the second day of the RIT/Mizuno Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

The Saints beat North Country rival Potsdam in four games 3-21, 27-30, 30-25, 30-15, but fell to Cortland 17-30, 12-30, 23-30. Geneseo won the tournament championship, while Cortland was the runner-up.

The Saint record moves to 6-12 on the season. The Saints will play at Clarkson on Tuesday before hosting a tri-match next weekend.

SAINTS DROP PAIR AT RIT/MIZUNO INVITATIONAL

September 20 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team lost a pair of matches on the opening day of the Rochester Institute of Technology/Mizuno Invitational on Friday night.

Brockport defeated the Saints in four games 30-19, 30-26, 30-23, 30-16. Geneseo followed, beating St. Lawrence 30-14, 32-30, 30-22. The Saints fall to 5-11 on the season and will face Potsdam and Cortland on Saturday.

SAINTS FINISH FOURTH, ODORCZUK MAKES ALL-TOURNEY

September 14 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team beat Hartwick in three games to advance to the 3rd/4th Place match at the North Country Invitational at Potsdam on Saturday afternoon, but lost to Oswego in four games to finish in fourth at the eight-team tournament.

Diana Odorczuk led the Saints in the tournament and was selected to the All-Tournament Team. Odorczuk had nine kills, eight digs, eight blocks and three service aces in St. Lawrence's 30-28, 30-27, 30-20 win over Potsdam. She added six kills, eight aces, 12 digs and nine blocks in the 23-30, 30-19, 27-30, 15-30 loss to Oswego.

Grace Randall also had a solid day for the Saints, totalling 23 kills and 12 blocks, while Anna Edwards had 58 assists on the day for St. Lawrence.

The Saints move to 5-9 on the season. The team travels to Rochester next weekend for the R.I.T./Mizuno Invitational.

SAINTS SPLIT OPENING DAY AT NORTH COUNTRY INVITE

September 13 - Serena Shallish led the St. Lawrence University volleyball team to a split in a pair of matches in the North Country Invitational hosted by Potsdam on Friday night.

The Saints beat Potsdam in their opening match in four games 28-30, 30-22, 30-25, 30-27. Shallish had 20 kills in the match, a season-high for the Saints. She added 12 digs and eight service aces in the match.

Diana Odorczuk added nine blocks, while Grace Randall had five blocks for the Saints, who currently lead New York State in blocks per game.

Buffalo State beat the Saints 21-30, 26-30, 22-30 in St. Lawrence's second match of the night. Shallish led the Saints with eight kills, while Randall added seven.

The Saints move to 4-8 on the season and will face Hartwick on Saturday morning.

SAINTS LOSE BRONZE MEDAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

September 7 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team split a pair of matches in Bronze Medal Bracket play in the Red Dragon Invitational hosted by Cortland on Saturday.

The Saints beat Alfred in the semifinal round 30-13, 29-31, 30-19, 30-23, but lost to Fredonia for the second time in the tournament in the Bronze Medal Championship, 28-30, 27-30, 24-30.

The Saints move to 3-7 on the season and will be playing closer to home next weekend as Potsdam will host the North Country Invitational.

SAINTS SWEPT IN FIRST DAY OF RED DRAGON INVITATIONL

September 6 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team was swept in three matches in the opening round of the Red Dragon Volleyball Classic on Friday night.

The Saints started the day with a four-game loss to Lebanon Valley, 30-27, 31-33, 25-30, 24-30, then suffered another four-game loss to Fredonia, 24-30, 30-16, 23-30, 24-30. The day ended with a three-game loss to Cortland 26-30, 30-12, 30-24.

The Saints will play in the Bronze Medal Bracket on Saturday, and faces Alfred at 2 p.m. If the Saints win, they will face either Fredonia or Lebanon Valley at 6 p.m. for the Bronze Medal Championship.

SAINTS FALL TO LeMOYNE IN FOUR IN HOME OPENER

September 4 - The St. Lawrence University volleyball team came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat LeMoyne 30-25, but ended up losing to the Dolphins in four games in a non-league volleyball match in Burkman Gymnasium on Wednesday night. LeMoyne won the match 30-20, 30-27, 25-30, 30-16.

The Saints came back from an early 19-12 deficit in the second game to tie the game 27-27, but LeMoyne scored the next three points to claim a 2-0 lead. Jessica Russell ended the second game with a hard kill to the center of the Saint court.

Game three was also tied near the end, as the teams were knotted at 24-24. Grace Randall had two kills, and the Saints were able to capitalize on two LeMoyne errors to win the game 30-25.

Randall led the Saints with 10 kills, 14 digs and nine blocks. Serena Shallish added 12 kills and 25 digs, while Kristen Ross had 39 assists for St. Lawrence. Ann Marie Bilodeau and Diana Odorczuk had five blocks apiece for the Saints.

Jessica Burns led LeMoyne with 21 kills, five aces and 10 digs. Russell added 9 kills and three blocks, while Britni Trapasso dished out 41 assists and had 10 digs for the Dolphins, who improve to 3-1 on the season.

The Saints, now 2-3, will travel to Cortland this weekend for the Red Dragon Invitational.

SAINTS SWEPT IN CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET AT ONEONTA

August 31 — After starting the season with a pair of three-game wins over Hartwick and Hunter, the St. Lawrence University volleyball team was swept by Frostburg and Oneonta on the second day of the Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational at Oneonta on Saturday.

Frostburg beat the Saints 30-27, 30-18, 30-19 in the championship bracket semifinals. The Saints were then defeated 30-23, 30-20, 30-13 in the third place game by host Oneonta.

Grace Randall, who led the Saints with 19 kills and 10 blocks in two matches on Friday, was named to the All Tournament Team.

The Saints fall to 2-2 on the season, and will look to move above .500 again this Wednesday at 7 p.m. when the team hosts LeMoyne in their first home match of the season.

RANDALL LEADS SAINTS TO A PAIR OF WINS IN DAY ONE OF ONEONTA TOURNAMENT

August 30 — Grace Randall started the 2002 season right where she left off. Randall, a sophomore middle hitter from Warrensburg, NY, made the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association’s All-Conference Team in her rookie season. Randall opened the 2002 season with a total of 19 kills and 10 blocks to lead the Saints to a pair of three-game wins over Hartwick and Hunter on the first day of the Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational at Oneonta State.

The Saints started the tournament with a 30-17, 30-22, 30-18 win over Hartwick. Randall led the team with nine kills and five blocks. Senior middle hitter Diana Odorczuk added nine kills, and Serena Shallish led the Saints with five aces.

St. Lawrence then defeated Hunter 30-25, 30-26, 30-25 behind 10 kills and five blocks from Randall. Odorczuk added five kills and three blocks, while Shallish had five kills and six aces.

Oneonta, Nazareth, Frostburg and St. Lawrence are the only teams in the 12-team tournament to finish the day with two wins. The Saints will play in the championship bracket on Saturday, starting at 11:30 a.m.

SAINTS SET TO OPEN SEASON TONIGHT, HOPE FOR SECOND WINNING SEASON IN THREE YEARS

August 30 — After closing out the second half of the season with a winning record, the St. Lawrence University volleyball team will look to produce its second winning season in three years when the 2002 season officially begins at 4 p.m. today with a match against Hartwick in the Oneonta Tournament.

The program had its first winning season in recent memory in the 2000 season, but struggled for the first half of last year after losing a number of top players from the 2000 team. The Saints rebounded, however, closing out the season with on a 10-7 run.

The team finished the season with an excellent performance at the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament, beating Clarkson in five games and pushing Skidmore to five games before bowing to the Thoroughbreds, who were the fifth seed in the New York Region of the NCAA Tournament.

The Saints return all but two players from last year’s season, including senior middle hitter Diana Odorczuk and sophomore middle hitter Grace Randall, who were both All-UCAA selections last year. The duo combined for 172 blocks last season, and Randall led the team with 240 kills and a hitting percentage of .275.

Also returning is junior setter Anna Edwards, who already holds the school record for assists. Edwards, who will be one of head coach Kristenne Robison’s starters for the third consecutive year, averaged 8.86 assists per game last season.

Juniors Beth Patterson and Serena Shallish both return at the outside hitter position. Patterson led the Saints with 2.05 kills per game and was third with 2.16 digs per game, while Shallish added 150 kills in 101 games last season.

While the Saints have a number of experienced players, the team also includes seven freshman who will make significant contributions this year.

The Saints have more home games than in many recent years, hosting two tri-matches and five regular season home matches. The team will host LeMoyne on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to open the home schedule.
