2001 VOLLEYBALL ARCHIVES BLAIR TO REPRESENT SLU AT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
April 17, 2002 — Maricela "Reina" Blair, a sophomore on St. Lawrence University's volleyball team, has been selected to represent St. Lawrence at the 2002 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference in Florida. Blair will join over 300 student-athletes from across the country May 26-30 at Disney's Wide World of Sports and Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, FL. ODORCZUK, RANDALL EARN UCAA HONORS AS SAINTS FINISH SEASON ON A POSITIVE NOTE November 7 — Diana Odorczuk, a junior from Harwinton, CT, and Grace Randall, a freshman from Warrensburg, NY, were both named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference team in recognition of their season as players on the St. Lawrence University volleyball team. The Saints finished the 2000 season with a winning record for the first time in recent history and had high hopes for the 2001 season despite a tough schedule. But the team struggled early on, going 3-13 in the first half of the season after losing some top players from last year’s team. “I think we just didn’t know how to win,” said head coach Kristenne Robison. “We just had to find out what our potential was and start playing to it. Once we figured out that we were capable of winning, we did.” The team closed out the season on a 10-7 run, and had an excellent performance in the UCAA tournament, beating Clarkson in five games before losing to Skidmore in five games. The Thoroughbreds are the No. 5 seed in the New York Region in the NCAA tournament. “Even though we lost to Skidmore, it was a very positive day,” Robison said. “Beating Clarkson in five then taking Skidmore to five was great for this team.” The Saints will lose two valuable seniors in Potsdam’s Lilith Anderson and Elizabeth Graydon, a native of Thendara, NY. But Odorczuk and Randall, both middle hitters, will return and figure to make a huge impact next year. “We’re going to be very strong in the middle next year,” Robison said. “I think we’ve got the strongest two middle hitters in the conference. Middle is primarily a quick offense and having two players that are that strong in that position makes us a force.” Randall led the team in hitting percentage (.275) and Odorczuk was second (.215). The duo combined for 3.54 kills per game and both players were solid defensively, contributing a total of 1.54 blocks per game and 4.12 digs per game. “Both players are going to have solid seasons next year,” Robison said. “I think we’ll see some untapped potential from Diana next year.” Other key returning players for the Saints will be sophomore setter Anna Edwards, and sophomore outside hitters Beth Patterson and Serena Shallish. The volleyball team will play some non-traditional matches in the spring to prepare for the fall season.
