1999 VOLLEYBALL ARCHIVES SAINTS 0-3 AT MIDDLEBURY TOURNEY
The women's volleyball team went 0-3 at the Middlebury Tournament this weekend, finishing their regular season play with a 13-23 overall record. In a successful season compared to past Saint records, the team has been consistently ranked state-wide in service aces, blocks and assists per game. On Saturday, the Saints bowed to host Middlebury 3-0, Plymouth State 3-2 and Skidmore 3-0. Middlebury went 3-0 in their home tournament, while Skidmore finished 2-1. SAINTS RANKED IN THREE CATEGORIES FOR NYSWCAA STATS The volleyball team is currently ranked among the NYSWCAA in three different statistical categories. The Saints are now 4th in service aces with an average of 2.85 per game. They are 7th in blocks per game with a 1.79 average and 9th in assists per game with an 8.04 average. St. Lawrence will wrap up their regular season play this weekend at the Middlebury Tournament. CLARKSON DEFEATS SAINTS The Saints fell to host and arch-rival Clarkson on Saturday by a score of 3-1. Clarkson won teh opening game 15-11. The Saints answered back with a 16-14 victory in the second game, but Clarkson would claim the next two in a row (15-13, 15-8) to win the match. St. Lawrence now has a 13-20 overall record. They will travel to Middlebury this weekend for their final tournament of the regular season. SAINTS 4th STATE-WIDE IN SERVICE ACES The women's volleyball team is currently ranked fourth in the state for service aces with an average of 2.55 per game. Individually, Diana Oderczuk of St. Lawrence is seventh in the state with a .65 service aces per game average. Please visit the volleyball notes page for a list of current Saint statistics leaders. SAINTS TOP PLATTSBURGH After a successful weekend at the Skidmore Tournament, the Saints began this week of play by handing host Plattsburgh a 3-1 defeat on Tuesday evening. All four games were close in score, as neither team won by more than five points. The Saints claimed the first game 15-13. Plattsburgh then battled back to win the second game 15-11. St. Lawrence would take the next two in a row 15-12 and 15-10 for the 3-1 victory. With the win, the Saints improve their overall record to 13-19. They will play in the Clarkson Tournament at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. SAINTS TAKE 2ND PLACE, THREE MAKE ALL-TOURNEY TEAM St. Lawrence went 2-1 at the Skidmore Invitational this weekend, losing only to host Skidmore in the championship game. The Saints blanked Union 3-0 in their first match (15-11, 15-9, 15-13). They then defeated Keene 3-1 (8-15, 15-4, 15-3, 15-10) to advance to the championship game. Skidmore claimed the title in their home tournament by defeating St. Lawrence 15-6, 15-13 and 15-9. Saint sophomore Kara Maher and freshmen Diana Oderczuk and Jennifer Zagursky were named to the All-Tournament team. The Saints overall record improves to 12-19 after a successful weekend. SAINTS CLAIM SECOND HOME WIN The Saints defeated visiting St. Michael's College 3-1 on Thursday night, for their second home victory of the season. St. Michael's claimed the third game 15-12 however, and looked as though they would force a fifth game as they lead the Saints 10-5 in the fourth. But Saint head coach took a timeout so her team could re-group and rally for a 15-13 come from behind victory. St. Lawrence improves its overall record to 10-18 with the win, while St. Michael's falls to 0-13 on the season. SAINT'S GRAYDON NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM Sophomore captain Elizabeth Graydon was the only Saint player named to the UCAA All-Tournament Team at Union College last weekend. She was joined by Courtney Lee (Skidmore), Kathy Tshampel (Skidmore), Tina Hutton (Skidmore), Katelyn Clark (Hamilton), Sarah Tschampel (Hamilton), Corinn Jordan (Union) Jennifer Zubek (Rochester), Laila Ibrahim (Rochester) and Jocelyn Place (Clarkson). Skidmore's Hilda Arrechea received Coach of the Year honors, while Courtney Lee (also of Skidmore) was named MVP. Union's Corinn Jordan was named Rookie of the Year. In addition, the Saints are now 6th in the NYSWCAA in service aces with 2.47 per game. SAINTS FINISH 5TH AT UCAA'S The Saints went 1-2 in the UCAA Tournament this weekend, defeating Clarkson and losing to Skidmore and Rochester. Skidmore, who went on to win the tournament, defeated the Saints 15-9, 15-4, 15-5 on Friday night. Saturday morning, the Saints fell to Rochester 15-6, 15-12, 15-13. The Saints were victorious in their noon match against Clarkson. They defeated the Golden Knights 15-10, 15-1, 15-8. St. Lawrence finished 5th overall behind Skidmore (4-0), Hamilton (3-1), Rochester (2-2) and Union (2-2). Clarkson finished in sixth place (0-3). POTSDAM BLANKS SAINTS Visiting Potsdam handed the Saints a 3-0 loss on Wednesday night, beating them for the fourth time this season. Potsdam's record improves to 20-5 with the win, while the Saints fall to 8-16 overall. Potsdam took the first game 15-4, the second game 15-7 and the third 16-14. The Saints led the third game 14-10, but could not hang on as Potsdam came from behind for the sweep. The Saints will play in the UCAA Tournament at Union this weekend. SAINTS BLANK OSWEGO The Saints handed host Oswego a 3-0 loss on Tuesday after losing all four of their games in the Vassar Tournament last weekend. They defeated Oswego 15-5, 15-7 and 15-11. On Wednesday, the Saints will face Potsdam for the fourth time this season. Potsdam has won each of the three meetings between the two teams so far. The game will be played at St. Lawrence at 7:30 p.m. SAINTS LOSE FOUR IN VASSAR TOURNEY The women's volleyball team lost all four of their matches in the Vassar Tournament this weekend. Hamilton, Elmira and Bard each defeated the Saints in three straight games. The Saints made an impressive effort against Vassar however, losing just 3-2 (6-15, 15-13, 18-15, 4-15, 14-16). They will play at SUNY Oswego on Tuesday and return to their home court for a 7:30 p.m. meeting against Potsdam. The women's volleyball team went 2-3 in the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament this weekend. They defeated Philadelphia College of Bible (15-3, 16-14, 15-13) and Keuka College (15-9, 6-15, 15-10, 15-11). The Saints lost to South Hampton (15-7, 15-13, 15-3), Nazareth (15-11, 15-10, 15-5, 3-15) and host Roberts Wesleyan (15-4, 15-6, 15-8). They will play in the Vassar Tournament next weekend. SAINTS EDGE CLARKSON IN HOME OPENER Sophomore captain Elizabeth Graydon pulled through with one of many point winning serves to give St. Lawrence a 16-14 win in the fifth game of their home opener against Clarkson on Tuesday. The Saints were down 13-12 when head coach Kristenne Robison called a time out so her team could re-group. They came out to win four of the next five points to edge out Clarkson in the final plays of the match. The Saints opened the match with a 16-14 win. Clarkson then came back to claim the second game 15-7. In the third game, St. Lawrence dominated play 15-4 over Clarkson, who would force a fifth game with a 15-13 win in the fourth. With the victory, the Saints improve their overall record to 5-8.They will play in the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament this weekend. SAINTS LOSE TWO IN TRI-MATCH
Utica College defeated the Saints 15-12, 15-9, 15-10, while Keuka won by scores of 15-11, 15-12, 15-3. The Saints will play on their home court for the first time on Tuesday. A 7:00 p.m. game is scheduled against Clarkson. ZAGURSKY NAMED TO ALL-TOURNEY TEAM, SAINTS LEAD NYSWCAA IN SERVICE ACES Freshman Jennifer Zagursky was named to the North Country Invitaional All-Tournament Team at Potsdam College last weekend. Saints Head Coach Kristenne Robison also nominated Zagursky for All-State Player of the Week. She has collected 66 kills for the season, averaging 2.357 per game. The Saints finished the tournament 1-3, beating Hartwick College and losing to Colby-Sawyer, Potsdam and Buffalo.
St. Lawrence was defeated in three straight matches (0-15, 8-15, 9-15) by host LeMoyne on Tuesday. While LeMoyne's record improves to 6-3, the Saints record falls to 4-6. They will play at the Utica Tournament on Saturday, September 18. Their first game is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
St. Lawrence defeated Hartwick College 15-3, 12-15, 15-12, 15-11 on Saturday in the North Country Invitational at Potsdam College. They lost their other three games to Colby-Sawyer (9-15, 4-15, 6-15), Potsdam (10-15, 7-15, 11-15), and Buffalo (10-15, 14-16, 15-7, 4-15). Colby Sawyer went on to defeat Nazareth in the Championship game (15-11, 15-13, 15-4). The Saints will face LeMoyne on the road Tuesday. POTSDAM TOPS SAINTS AGAIN St. Lawrence University's volleyball team fell to 3-2 on the season with their second straight loss to Potsdam, bowing 3-0 in a dual match at Potsdam. The Bears won the first game 15-2, took the second 15-9 and the third 15-6 to remain undefeated. SAINTS 3-1 AFTER CAZENOVIA TOURNEY St. Lawrence University's volleyball team made the head coaching debut of Kristenne Robison a good one on Saturday as the Saints won three of four matches and finished second in the Cazenovia Invitational. The Saints, Sophomore outside hitter Beth Graydon was named to the all tournament team and led the Saints in the tourney. The Saints opened with a 3-0 sweep of host Cazenovia, winning 15-5, 15-5, 15-6 and advanced to the playoff round with a 15-9, 15-9, 15-8 sweep of Medaille. SLU beat Cazenovia again, 15-5, 15-1, 15-11 in the playoff round, but lost to Potsdam 15-5, 15-4, 15-7 in the championship match.
