SAINTS 2ND IN SILVER BRACKET IN VICTORY PROMOTIONS INVITATIONAL
Sept. 8: St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Middlebury to beat Oswego 3-1 and finished second in the Silver Bracket in the Victory Promotions Invitational at Potsdam on Saturday. The Saints went 2-2 for the tournament, beating Plattsburgh, but dropping a 3-0 decision to Rochester on Friday.
Sophomore Jessica Lucky, who had 35 kills and 68 digs in the tournament was named to the all tourney team.
The Saints defeated Plattsburgh 30-20, 30-18 and 30-26 at the Burkman Gym on Friday afternoon to assure themselves of at least second in Pool C. The first and second place teams in each of the three pools will play at Potsdam on Saturday while the third place teams play at the Burkman Gym.
Rochester beat Plattsburgh in the second Pool C match 3-1. Rochester beat Plattsburgh 3-1 in game two of Friday’s play, dropping the first game 35-33, but winning three straight 30-15, 30-20 and 30-13 to close out the match. The Yellowjackets then took the top spot in the pool with a 3-0 win over the Saints, winning 30-22, 30-20 and 30-25.
Laura Gibbons ran points in each of the three games against Plattsburgh with strong serving and Abby Rose had seven kills and 20 assists in the three games. Jessica Lucky had 20 digs defensively and Kelly O’Connell had six kills and five block assists.
Middlebury won the first two games of Saturday's first match handily 30-16 and 30-17, but the Saints gave the Panthers a battle in game three before Middlebury pulled it out 30-27.
Lucky had ten kills while Rose had 15 digs and Gibbons, Lucky and Julia Congdon had nine digs each in the Middlebury match.
Oswego won the first game of its match with the Saints 30-26, but the Saints bounced back with 30-21, 31-29 and 30-26 wins to finish the weekend 2-2. Congdon had 17 kills in the four games against Oswego and added 18 digs and five service aces while Lucky had 13 kills and 29 digs. Rose had 32 assists and five kills and Jordyn Buzza added ten kills and six digs.
