POTSDAM SNAPS SAINT STREAK, 3-0 Sept. 25: Potsdam State snapped the Saints four-match volleyball winning streak with a 3-0 win at Maxcy Hall on Tuesday night.
The Bears, now 9-10, won the first game 30-26, took the second 30-17 and closed things out with a 30-16 win to drop the Saints to 8-7 on the season heading into a round robin at Oswego on Friday and Saturday. SLU will enter the weekend tournament ranked 13th in the NYSWCAA poll.
SLU will play Hamilton at 6 p.m. Friday at Oswego, and will meet the Lakers at 11 a.m. Saturday with a match against Elmira to follow at 1 p.m.
Jessica Lucky led the Saints in the Potsdam match with ten kills and 17 digs. Setter Abby Rose also turned in a solid pe4rformance with five kills, 22 assists, two service aces and 11 digs while Tami Couch had 16 digs and Julia Congdon added six kills and 11 digs.
SAINTS WIN FOURTH STRAIGHT MATCH, 3-0 OVER CAZENOVIA Sept. 20: St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team ran its match win streak to four straight with a 3-0 win over Cazenovia at the Saints’ Burkman Gym Thursday night.
St. Lawrence, now 8-6, turned back the 2-9 Wildcats 30-21, 30-11, 30-25.
Jessica Lucky led the Saints with nine kills and 15 digs while Kelly O’Connell had seven kills and five service aces and Julia Congdon added six kills and three service aces. Abby Rose had 23 assists in the three games fo rhte Saints and added seven digs.
The Saints are now idle until Tuesday Sept. 25 when they will play at North Country rival Potsdam .
SAINTS WIN PURPLE DIVISION TITLE AT SCRANTON INVITATIONAL
Sept. 14: The Saint volleyball team lost its first match to host Scranton in the Scranton Invitational on Friday, but came back with three straight victories to capture the Purple Division title on Saturday.
Sophomore Jessica Lucky was named to the all tournament team for the second straight weekend as she helped the Saints improve their record to 7-6 overall for the season. She had 54 kills, six service ages and 49 digs in the tournament. In addition, setter Abby Rose was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the second time this year in recognition of her play in the tournament.
Scranton turned back the Saints 30-15, 30-24 and 30-27 and was the pool A winner with a 2-0 record. The Saints bounced back with a marathon win over Kings, winning 30-23 and 30-21 before Kings won two straight games, 33-31 and 30-26 to force a tiebreaker. The Saints won the tiebreaker 15-13 to finish day one at 1-1.
Lucky had 12 kills and 16 digs in the three game set against Scranton while Abby Rose had three kills, 25 assists and 13 digs. Lucky had 18 kills and Tami Couch added 12 while Rose had 47 assists, five service aces and 18 digs in the five-game series against Kings. Megan McNiven added 28 digs and Lara Gibbons had four aces and 14 diges.
The Saints came out strong Saturday morning in their opening match against Centenary and after splitting the first two games, advanced to the Purple Division final against Wilkes with a 3-1 win. The Saints won the first game
Kelly O'Connell had a big series against Centenary with 20 kills in the four games. Lucky had 13 kills and 18 digs while Jordyn Buzza added nine kills and Rose had 39 assists and eight digs.
SLU then toppled Wilkes 30-25. 30-18 and 30-20 in the Purple Division title match on Saturday afternoon to finish the tournament with a 3-1 record. Lucky had 11 kills against Wilkes while Rose had six kills, 21 assists and four aces. Couch added 12 digs and Natalie Kurtz had three solo blocks and two assisted blocks with O'Connell adding two block solos and three assisted blocks.
The Saints will host Cazenovia in the Burkman Gym at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 20.
