SAINTS FINISH SEASON 19-19

Nov. 3:The Saint volleyball team continued to play teams tough, but remained winless in the Liberty League tournament at Clarkson on Saturday as Skidmore won 3-1 and Union completed a perfect weekend with a 3-0 win over the Saints.

 

Jessica Lucky was named first team All Liberty League and Abby Rose was a second team all league choice as the 2007 All Stars were announced at the conclusion of the tournament.

 

The Thoroughbreds won games one and two 30-20 and 30-10, but the Saints took game three 30-27 on Saturday before Skidmore finished it off with a 30-15 win in game four. Jessica Lucky led the Siants with ten kills while Kelly O'Connell had nine and Jordan Buzza eight. Tami Couch had 18 digs while Abby Rose had 31 assists, three service aces and 17 digs. Union went 4-0 in the tournament after 30-23, 40-27 and 30-22 wins over the Saints. Lucky contributed nine kills for the Saints and Abby Rose led St. Lawrence with 23 assists while Tami Couch added in 19 digs and four aces. Lucky led the team with 20 digs.

 

The Saint volleyball team took a 2-0 lead on Clarkson to open tourney play on Friday, but lost in five, and Vassar took a 3-1 win as the Saints played well, but had nothing to show for it after day one of the 2007 Liberty League volleyball tournament at Clarkson on Friday.

 

The Saints jumped out to a two-game lead after playing impressive defense and digging numerous tough balls, but Clarkson rallied back by matching St. Lawrence's intensity in the final three games. After digging only four balls in the first game and 10 through the first two, Clarkson freshman Alison Schroeder came through with 42 digs total, leading the Knights on the defensive end. Hilary Lockwood finished with 16 kills while Jessica Agnew and Amanda Rankin contributed 14 and 10 kills, respectively. Agnew also added 36 digs.

For the Saints, Tami Couch topped Schroeder with 44 digs. Jessica Lucky also came through with an impressive performance, posting 36 digs and 23 kills. Abby Rose assisted on 45 kills and dug 24 balls.

 

Lucky had nine kills and 20 digs, Couch had 20 digs and Rose had 29 assists to go with five kills in the Vassar match. Natalie Kurtz added eight kills and had three blocks for the Saints.

 

SAINTS DOWN PAUL SMITH’S FOR MOST MATCH WINS SINCE 1993

Oct. 30: St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team routed Paul Smith’s in three games in the final home match of the season on Tuesday night and recorded the most match victories in a season since 1993 with their 19 th win of the year.

 

The Saints, who will play in the Liberty League tournament at Clarkson Friday and Saturday, beat the Bobcats
30-13, 30-8 and 30-16 and are now 19-15 on the season. The Saints’ last winning record was 18-17 in 2000 and they finished the 1993 season 20-16.

 

Seniors Kelly O’Connell and Tami Couch finished off their home careers in style, combining for 13 kills, seven service aces and nine digs.

 

O’Connell had 10 kills, two aces and five digs while Couch had three kills, five aces and four digs. Abby Rose added 19 assists, four aces and five digs while Megan McNiven had a kill, seven assists, seven aces and eight digs.

 

Jessica Lucky, who was named second team All NYSWCAA earlier in the week and was an all tournament choice at the NYSWCAA tourney, had four kills and five digs in two games.
