CLARKSON SNAPS SAINT STREAK AT FIVE

Oct. 9: Neighboring rival Clarkson topped the Saint volleyball team 3-0 in Potsdam on Tuesday night, ending the Saints’ five-match win streak.

 

St. Lawrence, now 13-8, will play in the Liberty League/SUNYAC Challenge at Union this weekend. The Saints will play Union at 6 p.m. and Potsdam at 8 p.m. on Friday and will play Skidmore at noon and New Paltz at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

 

In Tuesday’s match, the Golden Knights topped the Saints for the second time this season, winning by scores of 30-17, 30-18 and 30-27.

 

Natalie Kurtz turned in a solid defensive performance at the net in the Clarkson series with one solo block and six assisted blocks. Jessica Lucky contributed eight kills and 12 digs while Lara Gibbons had 11 digs and Julia Congdon 10.

 

Jessica Klopp led Clarkson with eight kills in the three game set.

 

SAINTS CONTINUE VOLLEYBALL WIN STREAK

Oct. 6: St. Lawrence University’s volleyball team ran its match win streak to five straight and has won nine of its last ten after sweeping SUNY Canton and Green Mountain College in matches at the Burkman Gymnasium on Saturday.

 

First year Abby Rose was named Liberty League Rookie of the Week after her outstanding performance in the two matches. It was the second straight rookie award for a Saint player as Jordyn Buzza was the league's top newcomer after her performance at Oswego.

 

The Saints won the first-ever head-to-head competition with neighboring SUNY Canton in Canton’s first year as a four-year program with 30-14, 30-15 and 30-21 game scores and then swept Green Mountain 30-20, 30-14 and 30-14 to improve to 13-7 on the season.

 

First year Abby Rose had nine kills with a .643 attack percentage, 24 assists, three service aces and 11 digs in the match against Canton. Jessica Lucy added ten kills and 12 digs while Julia Congdon had five kills and four service aces with Lara Gibbons adding four aces and nine digs.

 

Tami Couch had 12 kills and Kelly O’Connell ten in three games against Green Mountain while Rose had 35 assists and a SLU record 14 services aces to go with 12 digs. Gibbons added three assists and 17 digs.

 

The Saints will return to action at Clarkson on Tuesday.

 

 

SAINTS SWEEP THE WEEKEND AT OSWEGO

Sept. 28: The Saints improved to 11-7 on the season with a trio of wins at the Oswego Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Saints, ranked 13th in the NYSWCAA poll, have won seven of their last eight matches.

 

First year Jordyn Buzza had a big weekend for the Saints with 32 kills in the three matches and a attack percentage of .464. She also had five assists, eight digs and six assisted blocks.

 

The Saints opened the weekend with a 3-0 sweep of Hamilton on Friday night. The Saints won game one 30-20 and then took two close decisions, 30-28 and 30-27 to complete the sweep of the Continentals. Buzza and Julia Congdon each had nine kills in the match while Abby Rose had 27 assists and four service aces. Congdon added 26 digs and Jessica Lucky had 25 digs to go with five kills. Lara Gibbons had five service aces and 12 digs.

 

SLU swept Oswego, a team they have defeated by 3-2 and 3-1 scores in previous meetings, with 30-25 and back-to-back 30-24 wins and then completed the weekend with a 3-0 win over Elmira, winning 30-25, 30-19 and 30-22.

 

Lucky had 11 kills and 15 assists in the Oswego match while Buzza added eight kills and three assisted blocks. Rose had 29 assists, five aces and 11 digs and was part of four blocks while Congdon and Gibbons added 11 digs each and Tami Couch had eight.

 

Buzza had 15 kills and an attack percentage of .600 in the Elmira match, adding five digs and an assisted block. Rose had 33 assists, three aces and 14 digs while Lucky had ten kills and 15 digs and Kelly O'Connell had seven blocks, three of them solo to go with five kills and three aces.
