SAINTS SHOULD SCORE IN UNYSCSA MEET Feb. 20: St. Lawrence University’s men’s swim team is looking forward to increased point production as it heads into the 2007 Upper New York State Collegiate Swim Association Championships to be held at Nottingham High School in Syracuse Wednesday through Saturday.
The Saints, ninth in the championship a year ago, have several swimmers with top eight potential and while depth may be a factor, the team should score more points this year.
“We are a stronger team than we were a year ago,” said coach Bob Clemmer. “A big part of that is the addition of our freshman class and sophomore diver Jason Johnson. “With Robo Ibler, Chris Woolston, and Matt Kirkpatrick in the pool and Johnson and Eric Velasquez in the diving, we are more talented at the top and have several athletes with potential for top eight finishes.
“We are hurt a little bit in depth in that Geoff and Steve Walano are studying abroad this semester. We will have a tough time putting two strong relays together for each of the relay events without them. We should be fine in the A relays, but might find it tough to get scoring out of our B relays.”
All A relays advance to the finals and the top eight B relays as competition includes preliminaries in the morning and championship rounds at night. Diving preliminaries begin Wednesday with the swimming events starting Thursday morning and continuing through Saturday. The top 24 swimmers in each individual event advance to the evening finals.
“I like the team unity this group is showing and our team chemistry is such right now that it will be a positive factor in our performance in a three day meet,” Clemmer added. “Our freshman class comes in with a lot of experience in the longer type of meet because of their extensive club backgrounds. They are used to marathon meets, and that is important because that is what the UNYSCSA meet is…a marathon.”
Ibler will be a key performer for the Saints in the sprint freestyles and has the third best time among the entries in the 50 free at 22.30 and is also in the top ten in the 100 free. He will also be a potential scorer in the 100 fly in addition to being a significant component of Saint relays. Woolston has top ten times in the 100 and 200 back and 200 free while Kirkpatrick has potential to score in both the butterfly and individual medley. Mike Trumbower in the distance freestyle events, Matt Feldman in the backstroke and Stephen Dally in the breaststroke are also potential scorers for the Saints based on times already recorded this season.
