![]() SAINTS SWEEP POTSDAM IN OPENING DUAL-MEET OF 2007 Jan. 19: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept their North Country rival, Potsdam State, in the team’s opening dual-meet of 2007. The men’s team defeated the Bears 121-97 behind first year students Robo Ibler and Chris Woolston, while the women’s team was victorious 125-75 thanks to solid performances from sophomore Alida Gerritsen and rookie Abigail Lynch.
Ibler and Woolston were both two-time winners for the Saints on Friday afternoon. Ibler, a native of Independence, MN, won the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 22.72 and the 100 Yard Freestyle with a time of 52.48. His fellow classmate Woolston was equally impressive, winning both the 200 Yard Back (2:04.05) and the 200 Yard IM (2:09.40). Each swimmer was also on the winning 200 Yard Medley Relay squad as they joined Stephen Dally and Brandon Barone in picking up 11 points for the Saints.
Potsdam was able to pick up a few victories and points in the 500 Yard Free and the 200 Yard Breast, but sophomore Mike Trumbower’s win in the 1000 Yard Free helped put the Scarlet and Brown over the top and handily defeat the Bears.
The women’s team got off to a quick start, taking the 200 Yard Medley Relay to grab the early lead. Relay members included Kim Watcke, Kate Farrell, Lynch, and Ashley Bogosian.
The Saints continued to pull away from Potsdam behind sophomore Devan Meserve, Gerritsen, and Lynch. Meserve won the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 11:44.60 and the 200 Yard Fly, racing in 2:24.58. Gerritsen chipped in with a win of her own in the 200 Yard Free (2:05.57), and Lynch and Bogosian finished one-two in the 50 Yard Free with times of 26.01 and 26.13, respectively.
Farrell and Watcke also added individual wins for the Saints on Friday. Farrell was a winner by over seven seconds in the 200 Yard IM (2:23.69), while Watcke took the 200 Yard Backstroke even with a time of 2:19.55, almost ten seconds ahead of the nearest competition.
Both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will be back in the pool tomorrow, Saturday, January 20th as Hartwick visit Canton, NY. The Saints and Hawks will meet in the Augsbury Natatorium at 1:00pm.
