SAINTS READY FOR NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The St. Lawrence University women’s swim team heads into its “second season” and coach Bob Clemmer and his swimmers are looking for results which reflect a strong finish to the dual meet season.

The Saints will compete in the NYSWCAA Championships February 15-17 in Syracuse and Clemmer and his swimmers are excited about the opportunity to show the improvement in the program.

“We are a deeper team than we have been in the past and this group has the best dedication and work ethic of any single women’s team since I took over as coach,” said Clemmer. “The preparation they have put in throughout the season and for this meet in particular will help them immensely in the meet and some of our upperclassmen have evolved to a much higher level as athletes over the last couple of seasons.

“The work ethic of this crew and the amount of work we have been able to give them enables them to have three productive days of competition. Many college teams will have one day that is a little off in the three day meets, but the consistency, work ethic and camaraderie of this team will really show for this group in this type of meet.”

The Saints will face a busy schedule with preliminary swims in the morning with a goal of making the evening championship competitions. The top 24 swimmers from the morning events advance to the evening swims while all “A” relays and the top eight “B” relays will have the opportunity to swim again in the evening.

Competition on Thursday includes the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and the 400 medley relay. Friday’s events include the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 800 free relay. Saturday’s events are the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breaststroke, 200 fly and 400 free relay.

The Saints will be well represented in all events and have a number of swimmers who should advance to the evening rounds.

One of the leaders for the Saints is an athlete who has been told time and time again that she should not be swimming because of shoulder problems. Junior Kim Watcke (left) is one of the Saint leaders and leads by example as well as by performance. “Kim is a story unto herself,” said Clemmer. “She has persevered under trying physical conditions and has moved from the sprints to the middle distances and is just on fire. She is an exceptional leader by example…she has always been one of our top point getters, but the other swimmers know what she is going through to do what she does and that is inspiring them to work all that much harder.”

Watcke was fifth in both the 100 back and 50 free in last year’s NYSWCAA championship and was a key swimmer on Saint relays. She will swim the 200 free, 200 back and 100 back in the championships in addition to swimming on relays.

Another top scorer for the Saints has been sophomore Alida Gerritsen, who has had a great dual meet season and was one of the Saints top scorers this season. “Alida is a classic example of taking it up a notch or two,” said Clemmer. She has been swimming really well.” Gerritsen will compete in the 200 individual medley and the breaststroke events.

The Saints should also score points in the sprint freestyles where two North Country products, sophomore Ashley Bogosian of Massena and freshman Abby Lynch (right) of Norwood have been outstanding this season. “Ashley and Abby have been a great one-two punch for us in the sprint freestyles and are also key relay swimmers,” Clemmer said.

Bogosian will swim the 50, 100 and 200 free while Lynch will compete in the 50 and 100 free and the 100 fly and both will race on relay teams.

Devan Meserve will compete in the 200 and 400 IM and the 200 fly and Kate Farrell will swim in the 200 IM and the 100 and 200 breast. This will be the third NYSWCAA championship for Meserve while Farrell is a senior and swimming in her fourth state championship meet.

“Devan has been a consistent point scorer for us this year and Kate is a very versatile swimmer with her abilities in the IM and the breaststroke,” said Clemmer.

Joining Lynch in her first NYSWCAA championship will be freshman Kate Waters, who will swim in the 100, 200 and 500 free. “Katie has really come along late in the season and is swimming very well right now. It took her a little while to adjust to the work load and the longer season of college swimming, but she has really shown second half improvement,” Clemmer said.

Other Saint competitors in the meet will include junior Katie Alexander in the 200, 500 and 1650 free, junior Lyndsay Belt in the 100 breast and the 100 and 200 backstroke; senior Meg Bernier in the 200, 500 and 1650 free; sophomore Aimee Clinkhammer in the 100 fly, 100 free and 200 breast; junior Angie Lathwell in the 200 and 400 IM and 200 fly; senior Ashley McCarthy in the 200, 500 and 1650 free, junior Kim Myers in the 50 free and 100 and 200 back; senior Becca Roy in the 200 and 400 IM and 200 fly and sophomore Meg Vaughn in the 50, 100 and 200 free.
