![]() SAINTS OPEN SEASON WITH SWEEP OVER ARCHRIVAL CLARKSON Oct. 27: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their 2006-07 seasons on Friday afternoon in Potsdam , NY against archrival Clarkson University . The men’s team avenged last season’s loss to the Golden Knights with an impressive, down-to-the-wire 126-113 victory. Meanwhile, sophomore Alida Gerritsen won three events to spark the women’s team in a 122-92 win.
The Saints men’s team got off to a nice start behind sophomore Mike Trumbower and junior Dave Burnham. The duo delivered a one-two finish in the men’s 800 meter freestyle, giving the visitors some confidence in the early going.
First year students Matt Kirkpatrick and Steve Dally wasted little time getting into the St. Lawrence-Clarkson rivalry, as the pair matched Trumbower and Burnham’s effort in the 200 IM. Kirkpatrick won the event, while Dally picked up critical points with a crucial second place finish.
Though the Saints were sharp, Clarkson collected key points that kept them in the meet. Kirkpatrick, Trumbower, and Burnham gave the Saints additional points in the 500 Free, taking the top three spots in the race. They were joined by sophomore Jason Johnson, who added another dimension for the Saints off the boards on Friday. The Newark, NY was excellent in both the 1m and 3m dives, taking both events to set up a critical 200 Free Relay for the meet.
With the meet on the line, the Saints turned to sophomore Matt Feldman, junior Geoff Walano, Trumbower, and rookie anchor Chris Woolston in the 200 Free relay. The quartet bested Clarkson, giving the Saints a tight 126-113 win.
On the women’s side, the 200 Medley Relay team consisting of junior Kim Watcke, senior Kate Farrell, Gerritsen, and sophomore Ashley Bogosian sparked the Saints early, posting a victory in the early going to put the Saints ahead.
The Scarlet and Brown never looked back, as they received contributions from a variety of swimmers to help seal the victory. Sophomore Devan Meserve, senior Meg Bernier, and junior Katie Alexander finished in the top three, respectively, in the 800 Free. Gerritsen posted one of three first place finishes in the 200 IM, with Farrell taking second place in the same event. She would also come through in the 500 Free, with Bernier earning the second spot.
Other victories for the Saints women’s swimming and diving team came from Watcke in the 50 Free, first years Abby Lynch in the 100 Fly and Emily Baron in the 100 Back, and Farrell in the 100 Breast. The team effort led St. Lawrence to a 122-92 victory to open the 2006-07 campaign.
Both the men’s and women’s teams will be in action again tomorrow, Saturday, October 28 th as the Saints welcome Skidmore College to the Augsbury Natatorium in the team’s first home meet of the season. The meet between the Saints and Thoroughbreds is set to begin at 1:00pm.
