![]() GERRITSEN, IBLER WIN TITLES IN AS SAINT TEAMS TURN IN SOLID PERFORMANCES Dec. 2: Sophomore Alida Gerritsen and junior Kim Watcke had big meets for the Saint women and freshmen Robo Ibler, Chris Woolston and sophomore diver Jason Johnson led the Saint men as the men finished fifth and the women sixth at the 2006 Liberty League championships at the University of Rochester Friday and Saturday.
Both teams had individual swims which were consistently better than seed times throughout the three-session, two-day meet.
Gerritsen was a two-time champion for the Saints, winning both the 100 and 200 breaststroke and accounted for 59 individual points and 16.5 relay points. Watcke had four top ten finishes in individual events and was on three relays, accounting for 58 individual points and 20.5 relay points.
Ibler was the 50 freestyle champion for the Saint men and swam all four relays accounting for 49 individual points and 28.5 relay points while Woolston had four top ten finishes and was on three relay teams to account for 55 individual points and 21.5 relay points during the competition. Johnson finished third in both the one and three meter diving competitions.
Union College won the women’s team championship with Rochester second in a nine-team field. The Saints scored 350 points, 20.5 behind fifth place Hamilton. Rochester won the men’s meet with RPI second in an eight-team field. The Saint men finished with 360 points, 56 behind fourth-place Union.
Gerritsen (left) trimmed seconds off her best times of the season in all four of her events. She won the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.01, and the 200 breaststroke in 2:33.27. She added a sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:19.55, nearly five seconds faster than her previous best time of the season, and was 11 th in the 100 fly in 1:04.96, also a season’s best time. She also swam on the 200 and 400 medley relay teams and turned a 1:10.72 breaststroke leg on the 400 medley relay team.
Watcke’s top finish was a third in the 100 back in 1:03.50 in addition to swimming on three of the four “A” relay teams. She was fifth in the 200 back in 2:17.61, eighth in the 100 free in 56.85 and 10 th in the 200 free in 2:05.44.
Gerritsen and Watcke joined Kate Farrell and Ashley Bogosian on the 200 medley relay which was fifth in 1:58.23. Abby Lynch joined Gerritsen, Watcke and Bogosion on the 400 medley relay team which finished sixth in 4:14.36. Lynch, Watcke, Farrell and Bogosian were fifth in the 200 free relay in 1:43.38 and Lynch, Farrell, Meaghan Vaughn and Bogosian swam 3:48.68 in the 400 free relay and were fourth for the Saints’ top relay finish.
Farrell had a trio of top ten finishes and accounted for 45 points in individual events. She was fourth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:34.22, third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.89, taking nearly two seconds off her best time of the year and was ninth in the 200 IM in 2:22.94. She also finished 12 th in the 100 free in 57.20. Lynch scored in four individual events as well, placing eighth with a time of 1:04.69 in the 100 fly, 12 th in the 200 free and 13 th in both the 50 and 100 free. Bogosian scored in all three freestyle races, finishing sixth in 25.83 in the 50, 14 th in 57.52 in the 100 and 15 th in 2:06.43 in the 200.
Other Saint scorers included Devan Meserve who was 11 th in the 200 fly and 13 th in the 400 IM, Kim Myers with a 12 th in the 200 back and a 14 th in the 100 back and Meg Bernier, who was 13 th in the 1650 freestyle. The Saints also earned points in the “B” relays with the 200 free team of Vaughn, Ashley McCarthy, Katie Waters and Gerritsen third among “B” relays in 1:48.40. The 400 free relay team of Waters, Myers, McCarthy and Meserve was sixth, the 400 MR “B” realy of Myers, McCarthy, Meserve and Vaughn was fourth and the 400 free relay of Waters, Myers, McCarthy and Meserve was sixth.
Ibler’s title in the 50 free came in a time of 22.30, .27 faster than his previous best time of the season and winning by .17. Ibler (right), added a second in the 100 free in 49.33, nearly a full second better than his previous best and added a seventh in the 100 fly in 57.33.
Woolston had a busy two days for the Saint men, but turned in his fastest times of the year in three of four individual events. He finished fourth in the 200 free in 1:49.87, was fifth in the 100 free in 50.38, over a second faster than his previous best, and was fifth in the 100 back in 55.89. He added a seventh in the 200 back in 2:06.16.
Johnson was third with a score of 361.10 on the one meter board and also finished third with a score of 396.25 on the three meter board to account for 32 points toward the Saint team total. Sophomore Eric Velasquez added a fifth in the one meter board and was eighth on the three meter board for 25 points.
Ibler was on all four “A” relays, joining Woolston, Steven Dally and Dave Burnham on the fifth place medley relay which finished in 3:51. Woolston, Dally, Ibler and Brandon Barone were fourth in 1:43.75 in the 200 medley relay while Ibler, Matt Feldman, Mike Trumbower and Woolston were fifth in 1:34.43 in the 200 free relay and Feldman, Burnham, Trumbower and Ibler were fifth in the 400 free relay in 3:31.08.
Dally scored in three individual events in addition to swimming the relays with a top finish of seventh in 2:23.5 in the 200 breaststroke. He was 10 th in the 100 breaststroke and 16 th in the 200 IM. Matt Kirkpatrick was ninth in the 400 IM in 4:35.08, 10 th in the 200 fly, 13 th in the 500 free and 15 th in the 200 IM while Trumbower scored with a 12 th in the 1650 free and Burnham was 145 th in the 1650. Geoff Walano scored with a 15 th place finish in the 200 back and was also on the “B” 400 medley relay team. The “B” 400 medley relay team which included Feldman, Alex Osborn, Barone and Walano was sixth and as was the 200 MR team of Steve Walano, Osborn, Trumbower and Kirkpatrick. The “B” 400 free relay team of Kirkpatrick, Dally and Steve and Geoff Walano was fourth while the “B” 200 free relay of Barone, Burnham and the Walanos was fifth.
Both teams are now off until a January training trip and will resume competition with a dual meet against Potsdam on Jan. 19.
