2003-2004 ST. LAWRENCE UNIVERSITY Results FOUR SAINTS NAMED TO UCAA ACADEMIC TEAM Mar. 23- Four members of the St. Lawrence University Swimming and Diving team have been named to the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association All-Academic Team. To be honored, players must maintain an overall 3.2 grade point average and must have sophomore standing at St. Lawrence. Included on the All-Academic team are Joanne Cavallerano, geology and history, Sarah Latchney, biology, Joe Jablonski, chemistry, and Brian Wasserstein, biology. MIKE MURRAY FINISHES 35th AT NATIONALS PRELIMS Mar. 19- Junior swimmer Mike Murray raced in the preliminary round of the 200 freestyle at the NCAA Nationals held in Principia College in St. Peters Missouri and placed 35 of 39 with a time of 1:46.40. Murray’s best overall time in the event came at the state meet in Syracuse with 1:42.93. Christopher Pearson of Carnegie Mellon took first place in the prelims with his time of 1:39.90. MIKE MURRAY TO COMPETE AT NCAA NATIONALS Mar. 5- Junior swimmer Mike Murray qualified to compete at the NCAA Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships to be held March 17-19 in St. Peters Missouri. Murray previously set a school record of 1:42.93 in the 200 freestyle at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championships this past weekend and will be competing in that event on Thursday, March 18. SAINTS COMPLETE FINAL DAY OF COMPETITION AT UNYSCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS Feb. 28- The St. Lawrence University Men's Swimming and Diving Team completed their last day of the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championship and finished in eighth place with 546 points. Mike Murray had the highest place finish for the Saints in the 100 freestyle with a time of 47.65. Fielding Essensa was 19th in 50.62, Mike Wieneke was 24th in 51.42 and Jason Britt was 43rd in 56.28. Joe Jablonski clocked in at 17:40.48 for a 12th place finish in the 1650 freestyle while teammates Brian Wasserstein and Tim Akers were 11th and 22nd in the 200 backstroke with times of 2:02.40 and 2:08.78 respectively. Wasserstein later finished the 200 butterfly in 14th with a 2:03.87 finish. Roy Lee placed 18th in the 200 yard breaststroke in 2:22.16 and Tim Robinson was 27th with a time of 2:29.34. Diver Rob Doran earned 268.65 points for a 14th place finish in the three meter dive. Akers, Essensa, Wasserstein and Murray combined for the 400 yard freestyle relay with a total time of 3:18.30 for a ninth place finish. SAINTS REMAIN IN SEVENTH PLACE AFTER SECOND DAY AT UNYSCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS Feb. 27-The St. Lawrence University Men's Swimming team set two new school records and remained in seventh place through two days of competition and two swimmers qualified with "B" NCAA scores at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association Championship. Mike Murray placed second in the 200 freestyle and set a new school record with a time of 1:42.93. Chris Berich took third in the 100 backstroke in 52.63 to both qualify in the "B" time for NCAA's. The 200 medley relay team made up of Berich, Paul Moncrieffe, Brian Wasserstein and Murray combined for a second place finish and for the second time in the meet set a new Saints record with a time of 1:36.83. Fielding Essensa, Roy Lee, Joe Jablonski and Mike Wieneke finished in the 21st spot in 1:45.39. Wasserstein placed tenth in the 400 IM in 4:24.91 and Jablonski was 13th in 4:26.83. Tim Akers took 24th in the 200 freestyle with 1:51.62. Akers then placed 18th in the 100 backstroke in 57.51 and Essensa was 26 in 1:03.42. Moncrieffe led the Saint pack in the 100 breaststroke with a 16th place finish in 1:03.13. Tim Robinson was 24th in 1:05.81, Jason Britt came in 28th in 1:09.7 and Wieneke was 29th in 1:12.64. Wasserstein, Jablonski, Essensa and Akers combined for a ninth place finish in the 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:26.81. Robinson, Wieneke, Britt and Lee were 23rd in 8:01.47. SAINTS COMPETE IN FIRST DAY OF UNYSCSA CHAMPIONSHIPS, FINISH IN 7th PLACE Feb. 26-The St. Lawrence University Men's Swimming team finished the first day of competition at the Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association (UNYSCSA) in seventh place in a field with 13 competitors with 183 points. Chris Berich qualified for NCAA "B" time in the 50 yard freestyle swim with a time of 21.24. Mike Murray was close behind at 21.63. A multitude of Saint swimmers also competed in the 50 free including Paul Moncrieffe who finished in 21.98 and took 14th place, Fielding Essensa finished in the 26th in 22.91, Mike Wieneke swam it in 23.25, Roy Lee had 23.92 and Jason Britt finished in 24.92. The combination of Berich, Moncrieffe, Essensa and Murray finished the 200 yard freestyle relay in fourth place with a time of 1:26.64. Wieneke, Tim Robinson, Lee and Tim Aker finished in 1:32.44. Joe Jablonski came in 23rd in the 500 yard freestyle in 5:01.74. Diver Rob Doran was 17th in the one meter dive with 266.35 points. Robinson was 31st in the 200 IM in 2:15.22 while the team of Berich, Moncrieffe, Jablonski and Murray combined for a time of 3:37.27 and an eighth place finish in the 400 medley relay. Akers, Lee, Wasserstein and Wieneke were 23rd in 3:48.52. http://www.naz.edu/dept/athletics/swimming/unyscsa/2004/index.html CAVALLERANO THIRD, SAINTS 8TH IN FINAL DAY OF NYSWCAA MEET Feb. 21: The St. Lawrence University women's swim team finished the third and final day of competition at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association Swim Championships Saturday in 8th place with 577 points. This year's team improved upon last year's finish by moving up three spots. Joanne Cavallerano paved the way for the Saints with a second place finish and new team record in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 17:49.45. During that swim she also set a new team record in the 1000 yard freestyle in a time of 10:40.53. Rebecca Roy O'Gorman was 27th in the same event with a time of 20:32.84. Kate Riley earned an eighth place finish in the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:20.00. Caitlin Fleming's time of 2:31.72 gave her fifth place in the 200 yard breaststroke while teammate Kate Farrell was 21st with her 2:42.43 finish. Meg Bernier's time of 2:35.52 in the 200 yard butterfly earned her the 23rd spot. Diver Jenny Nichols was fifth in the 3 meter dive with 349.65 total points and the St. Lawrence 400 yard freestyle relay placed seventh with a combined time of 3:47.67. WOMEN 8TH AFTER DAY TWO OF NYSWCAA MEET Feb. 20: St. Lawrence University's women's swim team finishes the second day of competition at the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association swim Championships in Webster eighth overall in a 15-team field. Caitlin Fleming led the way for the Saints and set a new team record in the 100 breaststroke with her final time of 1:08.98. Joanne Cavallerano clocked in at 1:58.75 in the 200 yard freestyle for a third place finish. Lindsay Oertel finished ninth in the 200 free in 2:01.58 and Kate Farrell swam to 20th place in the 100 breaststroke with a final time of 1:14.45. Both Fleming and Farrell combined with Oertel and Cavallerano in the 800 yard freestyle relay for a third place finish with a total time of 8:11.85. Kate Riley was twelfth in the 100 yard backstroke in 1:04.91. Riley and teammate Meg Bernier finished 21st and 22nd respectively in the 100 yard butterfly with times of 1:06.91 and 1:06.94 while Rebecca Roy- O'Gorman came in 21st in the 400 yard IM with a time of 5:20.82. WOMEN 7TH AFTER DAY ONE OF NYSWCAA MEET CAVALLERANO, MURRAY EARN DOUBLE WINS AS SAINTS FALL TO ALFRED Jan. 31-Joanne Cavallerano recorded three first place finishes as the Saints fell to Alfred University 124-118 Saturday afternoon in their last dual meet of the season. Jenny Nichols was second in the one Meter dive with 194.20 points. Meredith Bircher placed first in the three meter dive with 191.25 points. For the men, the St. Lawrence 200 yard medley team, made of Chris Berich, Roy Lee, Brian Wasserstein and Paul Moncrieffe, placed first in a time of 1:42.02 and fell 151-86 at Alfred University this afternoon. Joe Jablonski placed second in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:43.55 while teammate Mike Murray collected two first place finishes. One was in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:47.30 and the other was in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.42. Berich was second in the 50 freestyle in 22.02. Wasserstein earned first place points in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.33 and second place points with his 2:09.95 finish in the 200 yard backstroke. The Saints will now compete in the New York State Championships held February 18-21 for the women and February 25-28 for the men. FLEMING NAMED UCAA ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Jan. 27-Caitlin Fleming was named the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie of the Week based on her performances during last weekend's competition. On Friday, the Saints hosted their last home meet against neighboring Potsdam. In that meet she earned a first place finish in the 200 IM with her time of 2:19.98. Against Hartwick she placed first in the 200 free with a time of 2:04.61 and then recorded two second place finishes, one in the 100 freestyle and the other in the 200 breaststroke. MURRAY, CAVALLERANO AND NICHOLS EARN FIRST PLACE FINISHES AS SAINTS FALL TO HARTWICK Jan. 24-Mike Murray placed first in two individual events and then joined the 400 yard medley relay to post a first place win as the men suffered a 152-86 loss at Hartwick on Saturday afternoon. For the women, Joanne Cavallerano and Jenny Nichols each tallied two wins for the Saints as they fell to Hartwick 132-107 on Saturday and dropped to a 6-3 dual meet record. Nichols scored a 200.15 and a 210.25 in the diving events while teammate Meredith Bircher followed in second with points of 178.15 and 192.20. Caitlin Fleming earned a first place finish in the 200 free with a time of 2:04.61. She then recorded two second place finishes, one in the 100 freestyle and the other in the 200 breaststroke. The Saints will travel to Alfred next Saturday at 1 p.m. WOMEN WIN 128-73, MEN 93-77 OVER POTSDAM IN LAST HOME MEET OF SEASON Jan. 23-Both of the St. Lawrence University men's and women's swimming and diving teams enjoyed a win in their last home meet of the year as they both competed against neighboring SUNY Potsdam. The women won 128-73 while the men won 93-77. Joanne Cavallerano swam to a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 2:02.07. Ashley McCarthy earned first place points in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.99.Caitlin Fleming came in first with her time of 2:19.98 in the 200 yard IM and finished behind of Kate Farrell for a second first place finish in the 100 yard freestyle. Jenny Nichols earned first place for her one meter dive with 225.80 points. Meredith Bircher finished first in the three meter dive with 224.95 points. For the men, Brian Wasserstein placed first in the 1000 yard freestyle with his time of 10:48.06. Jason Britt came in second with a time of 12:32.85. Tim Akers placed first in the 200 yard freestyle in a time of 1:56.13 while Mike Murray and Paul Moncrieffe placed first and second in the 50 yard freestyle. CHRIS BERICH AWARDED Jan. 17- Freshman swimmer Chris Berich was named Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Rookie Swimmer of the Week based on his performances in the Saints home meet against the University of Rochester. MEN AND WOMEN FALL TO UCAA MATCH UP ROCHESTER IN SATURDAY'S HOME MEET Jan. 17- Joanne Cavallerano continued to dominate for the Saints as she earned three first place finishes in Saturday’s 149-90 loss against UCAA rival Rochester including a new pool record. Brian Wasserstein recorded three second place finishes as the Saints fell to the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon. The Saints drop to a 4-3 dual meet record as they prepare to host SUNY Potsdam next Friday. Wasserstein placed second in the 400 yard IM with his time of 4:40.96. He then finished the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 59.09 and the 500 freestyle in 5:22.38. Chris Berich and Tim Akers went one and two in the 100 yard backstroke with times of 56.61 and 1:00.37. WOMEN FINISH IN SIXTH PLACE, MEN EARN 430.50 POINTS IN UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS Joanne Cavallerano had a time of 18:20.81 in the 1650 freestyle race and collected another first place finish as the Saints competed in the second day of the UCAA Championships hosted by Union College on Saturday afternoon. Cavallerano later earned 15 points for the Saints with her fourth place finish in the 200 yard butterfly. Teammate Caitlin Fleming recorded a final time of 2:03.92 in the 200 yard freestyle to earn her a fifth place finish. She then swam a 1:13.36 to a sixth place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke and a fourth place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with her time of 56.99. Kate Farrell was close behind Fleming in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:18.92 in eighteenth place. She also swam to a sixteenth place finish in the 100 freestyle in 58.93. Divers Jenny Nichols, Meredith Bircher and Bobbie Faivus each tallied points for the Saints placing fifth, ninth and sixteenth overall. On the men's team, Mike Murray finished first in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 yard freestyle with his time of 48.11.Chris Berich finished behind Murray in fourth place in 49.08. They later combined with Paul Moncrieffe and Brian Wasserstein to finish third in the 400 yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:19.97. Moncrieffe also placed fifth in the 100 breast in a time of 1:04.31 while teammates Roy Lee and Tim Robinson finished in ninth and eleventh. Berich and Wasserstein both earned points for the Saints by finishing second and tenth in the 100 backstroke with times of 53.10 and 58.96. Joe Jablonski came in eighth place in the 1650 freestyle with his time of 18:18.57 while Dan Traub placed twelfth in 20:10.61. Four Saints earned points in the 200 breaststroke as Lee, Moncrieffe, Robinson, and Jason Britt placed eighth, ninth, twelfth and sixteenth respectively. The lone Saint male diver, Rob Doran, placed fourth in the one meter dive with a total of 268.55 points. The Saints return to action at home on Saturday January 17 at 1 p.m. CAVALLERANO SETS RECORD IN 500 AFTER FIRST SESSION OF UCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN SESSION ONE Joanne Cavallerano swam to a first place finish and new Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association record in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:15.36 at the UCAA Championships held at Union College in the first session on Friday night. This time replaces the old record she set in 2002 in her time of 5:15.62. The St. Lawrence women's 200 yard freestyle relay team made up of Cavallerano, Caitlin Fleming, Ashley McCarthy and Lindsay Oertel took third place with a combined time of 1:45.63.Oertel also swam to a 10th place finish in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:35.19 and a fifteenth place finish in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.78. Fleming earned fourth place points with her time of 2:17.37 in the 200 yard IM. Jenny Nichols scored a 322.50 in the one meter dive to grab a fourth place finish while teammate Meredith Bircher also earned some points for the Saints with her score of 250.50. The men's 200 yard freestyle relay made of Chris Berich, Paul Moncrieffe, Fielding Essensa and Mike Murray place third with their time of 1:28.78. Murray also placed third in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:53.80 and fifth in the 200 yard IM with his time of 2:03.89. Berich finished fourth in the 50 yard freestyle in 21.74 while Moncrieffe was close behind with a time of 22.49 in seventh place. CAVALLERANO NAMED PERFORMER OF THE WEEK Joanne Cavallerano was named Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Female Swimmer of the week for November 17-23. She was awarded for her efforts against LeMoyne on Saturday November 22. Cavallerano set pool records in the 200 and 1000 freestyle events as she swam to a 1:59.20 finish in the 200 free just minutes after finishing 59 seconds ahead of her closest competitor in the 1000 with a time of 10:48.72. This time replaces last week’s (10:53.41) as a new Saint's record. Cavallerano also swam to a first place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.98. CAVALLERANO SETS A NEW SAINT RECORD IN THE 1000 FREESTYLE Nov. 22- Joanne Cavallerano set pool records in the 200 and 1000 freestyle events as the St. Lawrence University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to LeMoyne at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The women lost their first dual meet 132-111 while the men lost their second in a row 134-101. Cavallerano swam to a 1:59.20 finish in the 200 free just minutes after finishing 59 seconds ahead of her closest competitor in the 1000 with a time of 10:48.72. This week’s time replaces last week’s (10:53.41) as a new Saint's record. She also swam to a first place finish in the 500 free with a time of 5:21.98. Freshman Caitlin Fleming earned 18 points for the Saints as she earned first place in the 100 breaststroke with her time of 1:10.57 and the 200 IM in 2:18.25. Jenny Nichols earned top spot in the one meter dive with a score of 188.85. Since LeMoyne doesn't have a three meter dive, the competitors dove from the one meter twice, and her combined score from both of the one meters qualified her for the NCAA Championship. On the men’s side, the Saints were paced by Rob Doran who scored a 145.85 and 222.75 in the one and three meter dives. Mike Murray swam to a 4:53.91 finish in the 500 freestyle while Paul Moncrieffe placed first in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 50 freestyle. Joe Jablonski earned nine points for his first place finish in the 1000 freestyle. The Saints will next travel to Union to compete in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Championships December 5-6. WOMEN EDGE CORTLAND 122-121, MEN FALL 127-112 Nov. 15-Junior diver Jenny Nichols swept the one and three meter events and Meredith Bircher finished third in the one meter and second in the three meter to help the Saints squeak by SUNY Cortland 122-121 on Saturday to improve their dual meet record to 5-0 while the Saint men lost their first dual meet of the season 127-112. Junior swimmer Joanne Cavallerano racked up 27 points for the Saints and earned two new pool and team records in the 1650 freestyle with her time of 18:08.37. Cavallerano also set a pool and team record in the 1000 on the way out of her 1650 swim with a time of 10:53.00. She also finished first in the 400 IM in 4:51.71 and the 200 yard butterfly in 2:17.05. Freshman Caitlin Fleming placed first for the Saints in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:03.89 while teammates Kate Riley and Megan Bernier followed behind finishing fourth and fifth respectfully. Riley also swam to a 2:22.13 first place finish in the 200 yard backstroke to take first place. Lindsay Oertel placed first in the 100 yard freestyle in 57.65 and in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:33.83. For the men, Mike Murray had two first place finishes in the 1650 freestyle and the 500 yard freestyle. Murray finished over a minute ahead of the competition with a 17:08.28 in the 1650 yard race. Freshmen Paul Moncrieffe and Chris Berich each earned 18 points for the Saints. Moncrieffe had two first place swims in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle sprints while Berich took the 200 yard freestyle and backstroke events. The Saints will travel to LeMoyne next Saturday at 1:00 before heading to the UCAA Championships in two weeks. SAINTS COMPETE IN RELAY MEET Nov. 8-Sophomore Kate Riley competed in six events this past weekend as the Saints headed to Rochester for the Harvest Relay meet held on Saturday. Freshman Chris Berich also came up big for the Saints as he too participated in six events. SAINTS AWARDED FOR WEEKEND PERFORMANCES Three St. Lawrence Swimmers and Divers were named UCAA Performers of the week. Joe Jablonski was the male swimmer of the week as he was part of the 400 medley relay team that earned a win in 4:20.41. He also added individual wins in the 200 IM in 2:27.34 and was second in the 200 fly against Nazareth on Saturday. The Saints swept the weekend's competition and are now 4-0 in dual meet action. Joanne Cavallerano was named the women swimmer of the week because of her performance against the Nazareth swim team. Cavallerano led the women with a 9:39.12 win in the 800 free, a pool record 2:32.37 win in the 200 fly and a 4:45.68 win in the 400 free as the Saints defeated Nazareth 124 to 112. Jenny Nichols was named diver of the week as she posted impressive point totals in leading a Saint sweep on both the one and three meter boards, totaling 205.49 points on the one meter board and 207.15 points on the three meter board on Saturday against Nazareth. CAVALLERANO LEADS WOMEN, TRIO PACES MEN AS PERFECT DUAL START CONTINUES Nov. 1: Joanne Cavallerano won three events and set a pool record and Brian Wasserstein Chris Berich and Mike Murray won two events each with Murray and Berich swimming on a winning relay team as the Saint men's and women's swim teams continued their perfect start to the 2003-2004 season with dual meet wins over the Nazareth women's and men's teams in Rochester on Saturday. SAINTS SWIM TO 3-0 IN DUAL MEET ACTION Oct. 31- The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s team downed nearby Rivals Clarkson University 128-98 and 127-100 respectively as the Saints had their home opener on Friday evening. The men’s 200 yard medley relay combined of Chris Berich, Paul Moncrieffe, Mike Murray and Fielding Essensa out swam three Clarkson teams to open meet on a positive note for the Saints. Berich also swam to a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.81 while Moncrieffe earned first place points in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.84 and in the 100 yard breaststroke. Murray also went on to win his next two events, the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:04.13 and the 100 yard freestyle in 48.77. Junior Joe Jablonski placed first in the 1000 yard freestyle, the 500 yard freestyle and he finished second in the 100 yard butterfly. Rob Doran took home first place finishes in both the one meter and three meter dives as the Saint women swept both events. Jenny Nichols earned 18 points for the Saints by scoring 186.80 on the one meter dive and 218.60 in the three meter dive. Meredith Birher, Missy Roser and Bobbie Faivus also placed for the Saints in both events.
Lindsay Oertel placed first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 26.48 by edging Clarkson’s Veronica Wolak who finished closely behind with a time of 26.74. Oertel also placed first in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 58.31. Freshman Caitlin Fleming raced to a first place finish in the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:19.33. Fleming later placed second in the 100 yard butterfly. NICHOLS, MURRAY HONORED Junior Jenny Nichols (Great Falls, VA) won the 1 meter dive with a score of 221.50 and placed second in the 3 meter dive with a 211.85 against Skidmore as she was named UCAA Diver of the Week. At St. Rose, Nichols swept the two events with a score of 168.35 in the 3 meters and a 176.25 in the one meter. Junior Mike Murray (Albany, NY) was named UCAA Swimmer of the Week as he lead the Saints in their two wins against Skidmore and St. Rose winning the 200 and 500 freestyle against St. Rose and the 1000 yard freestyle and 100 yard backstroke against Skidmore. MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TEAM DEBUT STRONG Oct. 25- St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept both of their competitors this weekend.
