DaSILVA AND WATCKE LEAD SAINTS PAST SAXONS, 126-111 Jan. 28: The tandem of Nikki DaSilva and Kim Watcke is becoming quite a formidable pair, as the two swimmers combined for three victories on Saturday afternoon as the Saints women’s swimming and diving team topped Alfred by the score of 126-111. The men’s team also had am impressive showing, but were nipped by the Saxons 115-104.
DaSilva and Watcke set the pace for the meet in the very first race, as they combined with Kate Farrell and Alida Gerritesen to win the women’s 400 Yard Medley Relay in 4:21.81. DaSilva followed with a second place finish in the 200 Free (2:05.87) and a win in the 100 Free (58.78).
Watcke won the 200 Back with an impressive time of 2:17.98, while Farrell also added two wins for the Saints, including the 200 Breast with a time of 2:37.95. Freshman Devan Meserve won the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:23.39) for the Saints, who closed out their dual-meet season with a victory.
Freshman Mike Trumbower was impressive on the men’s side, as he was on the Saints winning 400 Yard Free Relay team along with Matt Feldman, Dave Burnham, and Garrett Spencer (3:35.97). He also earned the victory in the 500 Yard Free with a time of 5:24.08. Senior co-captain Brian Wasserstein had a second place finish in the 200 Yard IM (2:10.11).
With the dual-meet season now complete, the Saints turn their attention to the NYSWCAA Championships. The women’s state championships are scheduled from Feb. 15th-18th while the men’s are Feb. 22nd-25th.
HARTWICK DEFEATS SAINTS, BUT FRESHMAN CONTINUE TO SHINE Jan. 21: The St. Lawrence University men’s and women’s swim teams ran into two tough Hartwick squads on Saturday afternoon. The Saints women’s team lost 128-109, while the men were up-ended 133-81.
Devan Meserve and Nikki DaSilva have had outstanding seasons as freshmen for the Saints, and the meet at Hartwick was no different. Meserve notched a victory in the 1000 Yard Freestyle with a time of 11:43.48. She also had a second place finish in the 400 Yard IM with a time of 5:06.43.
DaSilva earned and individual win in the 50 Yard Freestyle in a tight race with a time of 26.47, only .12 faster than Hartwick’s Devon Fuller. Sophomore Kim Watcke had an outstanding meet as well, winning back-to-back events, an extremely difficult task to accomplish. She won the 100 Yard Freestyle (56.91) and the 100 Yard Back, while Kate Farrell and Alida Gerritsen finished one-two in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with times of 1:12.93 and 1:13.43.
Meanwhile, on the men’s side, Garrett Spencer continued to be a force in the first year of his career, winning the 500 Yard Freestyle with a prominent time of 5:21.02. He also had a second place finish in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (11:05.90). Fellow classmate Eric Velasquez won the 3m Dive for the Saints with a final score of 152.05.
The Saints will conclude their dual-meet season next weekend as they take on Alfred University on Saturday, January 28th. The meet is set to start at 1:00pm.
WASSERSTEIN LEADS SAINTS TO SWEEP IN FINAL HOME MEET Jan. 20: In his final home meet in the Augsbury Natatorium, senior co-captain Brian Wasserstein had two victories, leading the Saints men’s team to a 99-60 victory over Potsdam State. The women, led by first year Nikki DaSilva, completed the sweep by winning 110-68 over the bears on Friday afternoon.
Wasserstein, who co-captains the Saints men’s swimming and diving team with senior Tim Akers, was the third leg in the 400 Yard Medley Relay team. The win gave St. Lawerence 11 points. He also picked up an individual victory in his final meet at home, taking the 200 Yard IM with a time of 2:09.45.
Freshmen Garrett Spencer and Matt Feldman also each had an individual win over Potsdam. Spencer won the 1000 Yard Freestyle for the men with a time of 10:53.37, while his classmate Feldman won the 100 Yard Freestyle in 52.71.
The efforts of DaSilva proved to be the spark the women’s team needed to begin 2006 with a win. The freshman scored two individual wins, including the 200 Yard IM in 2:20.39 and the 100 Yard Freestyle in 57.41.
Other excellent efforts were given by women’s captains Megan Bernier and Ashley McCarthy. Bernier won the 1000 Yard Freestyle in 11:50.90, while McCarthy contributed a win in the 50 Yard Freestyle (26.52). She also anchored the Saints winning 400 Yard Medley Relay Team (4:24.65).
After picking up a win in their final home meet, the Saints hit the road to take on Hartwick on Saturday. The meet is set to start at 1:00pm.
