TRUAX WIELDS HOT BAT IN SAINT SPLIT AT SKIDMORE
April 9: St. Lawrence University’s softball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the second game of a Liberty League doubleheader at Skidmore on Saturday and held on for an 8-7 win to gain a split in their league openers.
Skidmore won the first game 7-6, scoring the winning run with one out in the bottom of the eighth. The Saints will take a 7-7 overall mark and a 1-1 Liberty League record into a doubleheader against Union at the University at Albany at 1 p.m.on Sunday. Skidmore is now 6-7 overall and also is 1-1 in conference play.
Paige Truax had a big day for the Saints with six hits in eight at bats, four runs scored and two runs driven in. Rebekah Howrigan added four hits and dorve in three in the two games as the Saints got outstanding production from the top of their batting order.
The Saints had a 6-5 lead in the top of the seventh in game one, but Skidmore tied it with a run off first year pitcher Jess McPherson in the bottom of the seventh. Skidmore then won it in the bottom of the eighth scoring the inserted runner under softball tiebreaker rules with one out.
Truax had three of the Saints nine hits in the game while Howrigan went two for four and drove in two runs and Ashley Porter was one for three with two runs driven in. Heather Tuttle hit a run-scoring double in the first game.
Tuttle pitched the Saint victory in game two, improving to 5-3 on the season. Truax was again three for four with two runs scored and drove in two while Howrigan was two for three with a run scored and a run driven in and Tuttle was two for four with two runs driven in . Truax had two doubles and Tuttle one for the Saints. Catcher Shelly Martin also went two for four and scored two runs.
