and stealing 12 bases to gain her a second consecutive honor as
Regional All-America.
Porter gained recognition as both an Honorable Mention

doubles, 2 triples, 11 RBIs, and 11 stolen bases.
SAINTS DROP FIRST GAME IN ECAC
TOURNEY 2-1; RIT WINS ELIMINATION GAME 7-1
May
10: Geneseo snapped a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the seventh to hand St. Lawrence
its first loss in the opening game of the ECAC Upstate Softball Tournament at
Geneseo Saturday morning, 2-1. The Saints, the fourth seed
in the double elimination event, were knocked out of the tournament later Saturday
with a 7-1 loss to RIT in an elimination game. St. Lawrence
now 18-11, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Meredith Eisenhut opened
the game with a single, was sacrificed to second by Ashley Porter and scored when
Heather Tuttle's grounder was misplayed. Geneseo, 28-7, came back to tie it in
the bottom of the second as Jen Seitter walked, stole second, went to third on
a passed ball and scored on an error. Geneseo pitcher Katie
Hovey worked out of trouble in the top of the seventh when the Saints loaded the
bases on a double by Megan Ramos, a single by Tricia King and an error, and the
Knights won it in the bottom of the inning as Jackie Guba doubled, was sacrificed
to third and scored on a ground out with two outs to end the game. Hovey
allowed six hits and struck out nine while King took the loss for the Saints,
allowing five hits and striking out five. In the elimination
round, RIT's Shari McNamara threw a two-hitter and RIT scored five runs in the
top of the fourth en route a 7-1 win. Val Angelichio and Rebekah
Howrigan had the only hits for the Saints as Angelichio doubled and Howrigan had
a single and scored the lone Saint run when she scored on Ashley Porter's ground
out in the third. King took the loss for the Saints and finished her season with
a 12-6 record. CHAMPS

 KING
IS MVP AS SAINTS WIN 2ND STRAIGHT NYSWCAA TITLE May
4: Junior pitcher Tricia King came on in relief in the fourth inning and worked
the Saint softball team out of trouble and the Saints manufactured a run against
SUNY Institute of Technology pitcher Krista Hess in the bottom of the fifth inning
to win the championship of the 2003 New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic
Association softball tournament 2-1 in Canton Sunday afternoon. The
Saints, 18-9, won their second straight NYSWCAA championship
and are unbeaten in NYSWCAA tourney play over the last two seasons. King, (left)
who pitched the Saints past Utica College 8-0 in the Saints' tourney opener Saturday,
was named Most Valuable Player and was joined on the All Tournament team by Meredith
Eisenhut, Ashley Porter, Michelle Circelli and Val Angelichio. Runner-up SUNYIT
was represented by Kate D'Coursey, outfielder Brandy Napier and Hess, a Canton
native who pitched masterfully in two starts with a two hitter on Saturday and
a three hitter in the title game. While Hess had the Saint
batters off balance, allowing just three singles and striking out seven, SLU scored
the runs it needed to win with the help of errors by the Wildcats. SUNYIT
took a lead in the top of the first as Napier singled to lead off the game, was
sacrificed to second and scored on Erika Hock's single. The Saints tied it in
the bottom of the third as Nikki Lopez led off with an infield single, was sacrificed
to second by Eisenhut, went to third on a passed ball and scored when Tuttle hit
a grounder and the throw was dropped at first. Hess doubled
off Saint starter Heather Tuttle to lead off the fourth and King came on in relief.
While Stephanie Gajewski singled to right to greet King, Hess was held at third
with Gajewski taking second on the throw from the outfield. King then worked out
of trouble with a strikeout, a flyout and a grounder back to the mound. The
Wildcats threatened again in the fifth when DeCoursey singled, stole second and
moved to third on a groundout, but DeCoursey was out at third on a fielder's choice
and King again worked out of difficulty. The Saints took the lead in the bottom
of the inning when Lopez walked, stole second, was sacrificed to third by Eisenhut
and scored when Porter's fly ball was dropped in center field. A potential insurance
run was cut down at the plate when Porter was out trying to score on a wild pitch.
The Wildcats had runners in both the sixth and seventh, but
could not get another runner to third as the Saints held the 2-1 lead for the
championship win. KING, DEFENSE LEAD SAINTS
TO NYSWCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME May 3: Junior pitcher
Tricia King threw a five inning one-hitter and faced the minimum number of hitters,
and Meredith Eisenhut went 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the top-seeded St. Lawrence
University softball team to an 8-0 win over Utica College in their first game
of the New York State Women’s Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Saturday
afternoon. St. Lawrence will face No. 3 seed SUNYIT, a 2-0
winner over Utica in the first elimination game of the tournament, on Sunday at
1 p.m. on Saints Softball Field for the Tournament title. King
retired the first ten batters she faced before Allison Montante finally reached
base on a bunt single, but the Saints turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.
The Saints were flawless defensively, putting out ten Lady
Pioneers on groundouts. St. Lawrence also made some flashy defensive plays, as
Utica College’s Stephanie Festa was robbed of two base hits. Eisenhut made a leaping
grab at shortstop in the second inning, and Ashley Porter tracked down a line
drive into center field to prevent an extra base hit in the fifth inning. Nicole
Lopez also made a great defensive play with a diving grab in foul territory in
the second inning. King didn’t need much run support, but
she got plenty as the Saints scored four unearned runs in the first inning as
the Lady Pioneers made three errors. Senior catcher Michelle Circelli added a
two-run double in the second inning to break the school record for RBI in a season
with 29. Eisenhut added a two-run single in the third inning. SUNYIT
2, Utica College 0 Krista Hess threw a two-hitter and
walked three to lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 win in the elimination round to advance
to Sunday's championship. Hess faced the minimum number of batters through four
innings, then kept Utica College off the scoreboard as the Lady Pioneers stranded
five runners over the final three innings. SUNYIT’s Kate DeCoursey
hit an RBI single, and later scored on an error to give the Hess all the run support
she needed. Utica College 2, SUNYIT 1 Utica
College beat SUNYIT 2-1 in the first game of the day. The Lady Pioneers scored
both their runs in the bottom of the second inning. Starting
pitcher Stephanie Festa started the inning with a walk, then moved to second on
a sacrifice bunt by Laura Meagher. Melissa Zebda hit an RBI single up the middle
to give Utica College a 1-0 lead, then stole second to move into scoring position.
After a strikeout by Kelly Field, Zebda scored on a single by Alicia Ray which
was misplayed by the left fielder. The two run lead was all
that Festa need as she allowed just five hits over seven innings. She was helped
by her defense, as Hess was gunned out at home in the second inning by Allison
Montante. SUNYIT’s Erika Hock started a two-out rally in the
sixth inning with a double, then scored on a single by Christy Cushman. Hess extended
the rally with a bloop single to center, but Festa got Stephanie Gajewski to pop
up to end the inning. Festa ended the game with a double play, making a nice catch
on a line drive by Heather Hamilton, then forcing out Becky Rupert at first. UNION
SWEEPS SAINTS 5-3, 6-1 Apr. 30Freshman Julie Gawronski
belted a two-run home run in the last of the fifth inning as Union rallied to
defeat St. Lawrence, 5-3, in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday at Alexander
Field. Freshman Jackie Coffey picked up her ninth pitching win in as many decisions
as Union won the nitecap, 6-1. The Dutchwomen are now 21-5
while the Saints, who will host Rochester on Friday, are 16-9. Union
rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 to win the opener and snap the Saints' five-game
win streak. With two out and freshman pitcher Abby Arceneaux on first following
a walk, Gawronski snapped a 2-2 tie by unloading a shot over the right field fence.
Jill Ring followed with a single and scored on Stephanie Rubino's double to give
the Dutchwomen a 5-3 advantage. Arceneaux, who picked up her
11th win of the year against just two losses, gave up two runs in the third as
Ashley Porter, Heather Tuttle and Michelle Circelli all ripped doubles. Union
tied the game in the last of the fourth on a double by Gawronski, a single by
Ring and a two-run single by freshman catcher Alicia Gifford. St.
Lawrence regained the lead in the fifth, 3-2, on Val Angelichio's two-out single.
The Saints threatened in the first when they loaded the bases with only one out.
However, Arceneaux started a 1-2-3 double play by fielding the ground ball and
flipping it to Gifford, who threw to Melissa Marra at first. St.
Lawrence threatened again in the seventh when its first two hitters reached base
as a result of infield errors. Arceneaux got out of that jam on a strikeout and
two fielder's choice outs at the plate. Union struck early
in the second game, scoring four times in the first inning. With two out and no
one on base, Gawronski doubled and scored on Ring's double. Rubino's infield grounder
was booted allowing Ring to make it 2-0 and after a walk to Karyn Rautenberg,
Gifford belted a two-run double for the 4-0 lead. The Dutchwomen scored again
in the third as Ring doubled and scored on Rautenberg's ground out. Jessica Lawton
made it 6-0 in the fourth with an rbi single. St. Lawrence,
which falls to 16-9, averted the shutout in the seventh when Angelichio doubled
and scored on a two-out infield error. SAINTS
SWEEP SKIDMORE April 29: Tricia
King and Heather Tuttle turned in solid pitching performances and Ashley Porter
went four for six with five runs scored in the two games as the Saint softball
team swept Skidmore 7-1 and 9-2 in an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association
doubleheader at Skidmore Tuesday. The Saints, now 16-7 overall
and 2-2 in the UCAA, will take a five-game win streak into a doubleheader at Union
Wednesday. They will host Rochester on Friday to complete UCAA play and then host
the NYSWCAA tournament on Saturday and Sunday. King earned
her tenth win of the season in the first game of the doubleheader, scattering
six hits and striking out five. The Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third
with the help of Skidmore errors and a run-scoring single by Megan Ramos. Skidmore
cut it to 3-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Porter tripled and Tuttle
drove her home with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth and the Saints tacked
on three more runs in the top of the seventh. Tuttle drove in one run and April
Regonlinski drove in another in the seventh. The Saints took
a five run lead in the first two innings in the nightcap. Tuttle doubled in Meredith
Eisenhut, who was three for four in the nightcap, and Michelle Circelli doubled
in Tuttle in a two-run first and Tuttle and Circelli each hit their second double
in as many innings to drive in three runs in the second. Eisenhut
doubled in two runs in the third and Porter singled home a run in the third and
Circelli hit a two run homer in the fifth to complete the Saint scoring. TUTTLE,
RAMOS EARN WEEKLY UCAA HONORS April 29: Heather Tuttle was selected
as the UCAA Player of the Week, and Megan Ramos earned UCAA Rookie of the Week
Honors on Tuesday. Tuttle, a sophomore from Rome, NY, hit .579 in a 5-1
week which included sweeps of Hamilton and St. John Fisher and a split with Middlebury.
She also scored seven runs, hit two doubles, two home runs and added seven RBI.
She also posted a .184 ERA in 19 innings on the mound. Ramos, a first-year
student from Berwick, ME, hit .368 with two home runs and five RBI. She hit a
towering single to left to drive home the winning run in th eighth inning in a
3-2 win over St. John Fisher, giving the Saints a sweep of the Cardinals. St.
Lawrence plays Skidmore on the road today, then faces Union in Schenetady on Wednesday. SAINTS
SWEEP ST. JOHN FISHER IN DOUBLEHEADER April 27: Junior pitcher Tricia
King held St. John Fisher to one run on seven hits with some help from outstanding
defense and Heather Tuttle singled home the winning run in the fifth inning to
give St. Lawrence a 2-1 win over the Cardinals in the first game of a doubleheader
and first year third baseman Megan Ramos singled over the drawn-in outfield to
drive home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Saints completed
the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap. King was the winning pitcher
in both games as she came on in relief in the nightcap and improved to 9-2 on
the season. The Saints are now 14-7 overall while Fisher falls to 23-10-1.
The Saints have also been chosen as the top seed in the NYSWCAA tournament and
will host the event Saturday and Sunday. King held Fisher scoreless through
the first four innings of the first game and the Saints took a 1-0 lead in the
bottom of the third inning as King singled to left and bunt singles by Nikki Lopez
and Meredith Eisenhut loaded the bases. Tuttle then hit a one-out single to right
to score King, but Lopez was out at the plate on a close play at home. Fisher
tied it in the bottom of the fifth as Nikki Cardaro singled and scored on pinch
hitter Heather Luksch's single, but Lopez, who had a great doubleheader with four
shoestring catches and four outfield assists in the two games, gunned down a run
at the plate to keep it a tie game. Eisenhut walked to lead off the fifth,
was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on an error and scored on Tuttle's
infield hit to give the Saints the 2-1 lead. King surrendered a single in both
the sixth and the seventh, but Fisher could not plate the tying run. Tuttle
started the second game for the Saints and shut Fisher out through the first five
innings. The Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Ashley
Porter reached on an error, went to second on Tuttle's single and scored on a
passed ball. It went to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth as Porter reached on a
one out infield hit, moved up on Tuttle's ground out, stole third and coasted
home when Michelle Circelli doubled down the left field line. Fisher tied
it up in the top of the sixth as Tiffany Buk singled to right center and Joylynn
Daggett rocked a home run to dead center to make it a 2-2 game. Both teams
had chances to score in a wild seventh inning. Cordaro led the top half of the
inning off with a triple to left, bringing King on to pitch. King got the first
out on a ground out and pinch runner Ashlee Easterly was caught off third on a
play from Eisenhut to Lopez on Jennah Muse's grounder for the second out. Amanda
Kent then singled to left, but Lopez gunned down Muse at the plate to end the
inning. Eisenhut opened the bottom of the seventh with a bunt single, advanced
on Porter's sacrifice, but was cut down at the plate on a throw from Muse trying
to score on Tuttle's ball which was dropped for an error in right. The
teams went to the tie breaker in the eighth and while King stranded Fisher's inserted
runner at third in the top of the eighth, Saint pinch runner Rebecca Armstrong
advanced on April Regonlinski's sacrifice bunt and scored when Lopez hit a high
and long single to left with the infield in to give the Saints the 3-2 win. SAINTS,
MIDDLEBURY SPLIT April 22: Middlebury College scored six
runs in the second inning in the first game of a NCAA Division III softball doubleheader
at St. Lawrence on Tuesday and went on to a 7-1 win over the Saints, but SLU salvaged
a split of the doubleheader with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. Middlebury,
now 15-8 overall, used five hits and two Saint errors plus some heads-up baserunning
in its big inning in the first game. The Panthers scored five unearned runs off
Saint starter Heather Tuttle in the inning, and it was plenty of run support for
Andrea Russo, who won her sixth of the year with Lauren Bowe earning her second
save. Megan McCarthy, Lindsay Ladd and Kelly Slack each had two
hits in the game for Middlebury while Tuttle had two of the six Saint hits and
Val Angelichio doubled home the lone Saint run in the bottom of the sixth. Tricia
King pitched her seventh win of the season in the nightcap as the Saints improved
to 12-7 on the year with the 5-3 win. The Saints jumped out to a 2-0 first inning
lead on Michelle Circelli's run-scoring double and a pair of Middlebury errors,
but the Panthers came right back to tie it in the top of the second. The
Saints went back on top in the bottom of the third when Tuttle singled home a
run, but Middlebury tied it again at 3-3 on Lauren Guza's run scoring single in
the third. St. Lawrence took the lead for good with two in the
bottom of the fifth on a pair of bunt singles by Meredith Eisenhut and Ashley
Porter and Circelli's run scoring double. Christina Freyer went
two for two for Middlebury while Circelli, Eisenhut and April Regonlinski each
were two for three for the Saints. A non-league doubleheader with
Elmira scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled due to league scheduling commitments
on the part of Elmira. A Friday doubleheader against Russell Sage has een postponed
because Russell Sage cannot field a full lineup due to injuries and family commitments. SAINTS
SWEEP HAMILTON 10-9, 11-4 April 21: Hitting just .201 in
the six games since its return from Florida, the Saint softball team snapped out
of the hitting doldrums Monday and went on to a sweep of Hamilton College, winning
the first game 10-9 and the second, shortened to six innings by darkness, 11-4.
The Saints scored 21 runs on 29 hits in the doubleheader and hit
seven homers as they improved to 11-6 overall heading into a Tuesday home doubleheader
against Middlebury. Heather
Tuttle (left) and Michelle Circelli were the hitting stars for the Saints and
Tuttle was the winning pitcher in both games, coming in to relieve Tricia King
in the first game and pitching the nightcap. Tuttle went seven for eight, scored
five runs, had two doubles and two homers and drove in five runs. Circelli was
four for seven with five runs scored, a double, two homers and six runs driven
in. Megan Ramos also had a pair of homers in the doubleheader and drove in four
runs.
Circelli's three run homer got the doubleheader off to a
good start for the Saints in the top of the first and the Saints took a 6-2 lead
on Ramos' three run shot in the third. Hamilton battled back against Saint starter
King and cut it to 6-5 in the bottom of the third, but King's two run double gave
the Saints an 8-5 cushion in the top of the fifth. Hamilton came
back to tie in the bottom of the fifth, but Meredith Eisenhut hit a leadoff homer
in the top of the sixth and singles by Tuttle and Ashley Porter brought home a
second run to make it 10-8. Hamilton cut it to a one-run game with an unearned
run in the bottom of the seventh, but Tuttle worked out of further trouble to
preserve the win. Tuttle hit the first of her two home runs in
the second game in the second inning to give the Saints a 1-0 lead and SLU busted
it open with a eight run fourth which included a two run homer by Circelli, a
two run homer by Ramos and a solo shot by Tuttle. Tuttle also doubled home a run
in the sixth, going four for four with two homers, a double and three runs driven
in in the game. 4th RANKED CORTLAND
SWEEPS SAINTS, 7-2, 8-0 April 19: St. Lawrence University's
softball team will be out to snap a four-game losing skid when it plays an Upstate

Saints dropped a pair to the nation's fourth-ranked team Saturday, losing 7-2
and 8-0 in a doubleheader at Cortland State. The Saints, now 9-6,
played Cortland tough in the first game and trailed only 3-2 into the bottom of
the fifth, but Dragon sophomore Erin Bock hit a grand slam home run to break it
open. Meredith Eisenhut went two for three with a triple and Ashley Porter, Michelle
Circelli, Megan Ramos and Val Angelichio had singles for the Saints. Tricia King

had a homer and Julie Gentner had a double and a triple for Cortland, which was
helped along by four Saint errors. Lara Almansberger pitched a three hitter for
the win as Cortland improved to 26-4 on the season. Heather Tuttle took the loss

the fifth on Previo's two out two-run single. SLU came right back
to tie it in the bottom of the fifth as Eisenhut singled and scored on Regonlinski's
triple, and Angelichio singled home pinch runner Erin Lloyd. The Saints took a
6-3 lead with three in the bottom of the sixth as Ashley Porter singled in one
run, Megan Ramos scored on a wild pitch and Regonlinski drove in a run with a
ground out. While Potsdam did get one back in the top of the seventh on Rebeideau's
run scoring double, King worked out of further difficulty to lock up the win.
Tuttle improved to 3-2 on the season and struck out three in five
innings as the Saints coasted to the win in the second game. Rebideau took the
loss for the Bears. Ashley Porter was one for one and scored three runs to pace
the Saints, who scored eight runs on only three hits, but took advantage of walks
and three Potsdam errors. Erica Lussier and Leslie Hartley had the hits for Potsdam,
which fell to 1-12 on the season. Porter opened the scoring when
she singled with one out in the first and scored on a bases loaded walk to Angelichio.

King walked with the bases loaded for another. It went to 6-0 in the fourth as

records and was the 2002 UCAA Player of the Year, will lead the Saints into the
new season. The Saints, who started workouts in the Leithead Field
House on January 27, return a nearly intact lineup from the team which won the
New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association championship last spring
and have added some promising first year players to add to the Saint depth. Eisenhut,
who hit .546, senior catcher Michelle Circelli, who hit .413 and sophomore Nicky
Lopez, who hit .388 are the leading returning hitters for the Saints while Tricia
King, 7-3 with a 3.26 earned run average, and Heather Tuttle, who was 11-13 with
a 3.96 ERA, return on the mound. Note: Scores and recaps
from the Southern trip will be posted upon the team's return to the North Country. |
