IS UCAA PLAYER OF THE YEAR AGAIN May 22: Meredith Eisenhut
was named Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Year in softball
for the second straight year after leading the conference in batting average and
several other statistical categories. Eisenhut has been UCAA Player
of the Year five times in three different sports in the last two years. She earned
the player of the year award in soccer, basketball and softball as a junior and
repeated in basketball and softball this season. She did not play soccer as a
senior. The Saint standout, who will return to complete her softball
eligibility next year as a graduate student, led the UCAA in hitting with a .546
batting average and in stolen bases with 24. She was second in runs driven in
with 24. She made the switch from second base to shortstop this season and led
the team in assists with 93, finishing the year with a .947 fielding percentage.
The only first-team All UCAA selection for the Saints as the first-team shortstop,
Eisenhut was joined on the all conference team by four second-team selections.
Michelle Circelli was second team catcher and finished third in
the conference in batting with a .413 batting average and led the league in runs
driven in with 28. Freshman Nikki Lopez was a second team outfielder and was fifth
in batting in the UCAA at .388 and second in stolen bases with 18. Sophomore Tricia
King earned second team All UCAA at both pitcher and designated hitter, going
7-3 on the mound and hitting .279.
EISENHUT MVP AS SAINTS WIN NYSWCAA
TOURNAMENT May 5: Meredith Eisenhut
earned Most Valuable Player honors as St. Lawrence University's softball
team won the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association softball championship
with a 8-1 victory over Russell Sage on Sunday. The fourth-seeded
Saints, now 18-16, went a perfect 3-0 in the tournament, defeating top-seed Rensselaer
5-2 in the opening game and battering Russell Sage 10-0 in their second game.
Sage, which upset Union in the opening round, beat the Dutchwomen again in Sunday's
first elimination game, but could not stay with the Saints in the title game.
Eisenhut finished the tournament with a .667 batting average,
scored nine runs and drove in seven runs and had a .733 on-base percentage and
was a perfect four for four in steals. Joining
Eisenhut, on the all-tournament team were catcher Michelle Circelli, who hit .467
and drove in four runs with a .933 slugging percentage, pitcher Tricia King, (left)who
was 2-0 on the mound and hit .357, outfielder Nikki Lopez, who hit .750 and scored
five times and outfielder April Regonlinski, who drove in five runs in the tournament.
The softball crown is the second NYSWCAA tournament title in three
tries for Saint teams this season. The women's soccer team won the NYSWCAA title
in the fall. The Saints jumped on Russell Sage early for the second
straight time as Eisenhut singled, stole second and scored on Circelli's single
in the first. The Saints added five runs in the second, three of them on Regonlinski's
three run double and tacked on a run in the fourth when Regonlinski singled, went
to third on Circelli's double and scored on Val Angelichio's single. Circelli
capped a four for four day with a solo home run with two out in the top of the
sixth. Heather Tuttle pitched the victory for the Saints, allowing
one earned run on six hits. SLU will now await word on a possible

IN DRIVER'S SEAT AFTER NYSWCAA SOFTBALL SEMIS May 4: St.
Lawrence University's softball team scored four times in the top of the fourth
to upset top seed Rensselaer in Saturday's first game of the New York State Women's
Collegiate Athletic Association tournament at Union and then ripped Russell Sage,
itself an upset winner over Union, 10-0, to take command of the tournament with
the championship game set for Sunday. The Saints, the only team
without a loss in the double elimination tournament, will play the winner of an
elimination game between Union and Russell Sage set for 11 a.m. The Saints will
play the winner of that game at 1 p.m. with a second game scheduled for 3 p.m.
if the Saints do not win in their first shot at the title. Meredith
Eisenhut and Nicole Lopez combined for four hits and scored three runs in the
first game and Tricia King shut out RPI after the first inning in the Saints opening
5-2 win. Eisenhut gave the Saints a 1-0 lead in the top of the
first, scoring after a two-out wild pitch. RPI came back to take a 2-1 lead on
a two-run double by Leanna Smith in the bottom of the first, but King shut the
Engineers down the rest of the way. The Saints sent nine batters
to the plate in the top of the fourth, scoring four runs on three hits and two
RPI errors. King tied the game with a one-out single and Krystina Gotsch singled
to give the Saints a 3-2 lead. Two more runs scored when April Regonlinski's grounder
was booted for an error to give the Saints all the cushion King was to need. Russell
Sage, which upset Union 5-4 in nine innings, was dispatched in five innings by
the Saints as they scored nine times in the top of the third with Heather Tuttle
picking up the win in relief. King allowed just one hit and struck
out three in two innings and Tuttle took over and allowed three hits the rest
of the way. Eisenhut had two singles, a double and scored three
runs, driving in one while Gotsch had a pair of singles and drove in two and Lopez
also singled twice and drove in two runs in the Saint rout. EISENHUT
HOMER LIFTS SAINT SOFTBALL IN NYSWCAA QUARTERFINAL CONTEST May
1: Senior shortstop Meredith Eisenhut hit a grand slam inside the park home run
in the second inning and freshman pitcher Heather Tuttle saved the win for sophomore
Tricia King, ending a Rochester threat in the top of the seventh as St. Lawrence
eliminated Rochester 5-4 in the New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association
quarterfinals Wednesday afternoon. The Saints, now 15-16, advance
to the semifinals at Union this weekend. Rochester falls to 13-21 with the loss.
Rochester starter Kathy Gagne shut the Saints out 5-0 on three
hits in a regular season meeting last Saturday, but this time the Saints struck
early. Eisenhut led off the bottom of the first with a bunt single, stole second
and was sacrificed to third, scoring on April Regonlinski's squeeze bunt. Kelly
McAuley and King then rapped sharp singles to start the top of the second and
Nikki Lopez loaded the bases with a bunt single. Eisenhut then lined a shot down
the first base line that rolled all the way to the fence to clear the bases and
the Saint start never stopped running for the inside the park grand slam. King
kept Rochester off the board through the first five innings, surviving a trio
of Yellowjacket singles in the fifth unscathed. Rochester finally broke through
with a four run sixth as Kristin Maloney and Meredith Gray hit consecutive singles,
and with one out Val Palermo delivered a run-scoring single. Rebecca Ryszkiewicz
then singled up the middle to drive in two runs and the fourth scored on an error
before King worked out of the inning. Maloney and Bridget Baran
singled to lead off the top of the seventh, but King enticed a ground out before
giving way to Tuttle, who enticed a pop-up and then struck out Rochester leadoff
hitter Jessica Fanning to end the game. Eisenhut, Michelle Circelli,
Val Angelichio, McAuley, King and Lopez all had two hits each for the Saints while
Tracy Simon, Maloney and Palermo had two hits apiece for Rochester. SAINTS
SEEDED FOURTH IN NYSWCAA TOURNAMENT, HOST ROCHESTER April
28: The Saint softball team was awarded the fourth seed in the New York State
Women's Collegiate Athletic Association tournament and will host Rochester at
2 p.m. in a quarterfinal game on Wednesday. Rensselaer was the
top seed in the tournament, followed by Union, Cazenovia and the Saints. Rochester
was the fifth seed and Russell Sage was seeded sixth. RPI and Union received first
round byes. The semifinals and finals will be played at Union this weekend. CIRCELLI
HOMER HELPS SAINTS TO SPLIT April 27: Michelle Circelli's
second two-run home run of the week helped St. Lawrence University's softball
team to a 4-3 win over the University of Rochester in the second game of a UCAA
doubleheader Saturday and a split of the series. Rochester won
the first game 5-0 as Kathy Gagne pitched a three-hit shutout for her eighth win
of the season. Losing pitcher Heather Tuttle had two of the three hits for the
Saints. Circelli hit a two run triple in the first inning of the
nightcap and then added a two run homer to left in the fifth to stake the Saints
to a 4-0 lead. Rochester rallied with three runs in the fifth, but winning pitcher
Tricia King (5-3) worked out of the inning and preserved the victory.
The Saints 14-16 overall and 3-3 in the UCAA are scheduled to host Skidmore for
a pair of games on Sunday at 2 p.m. Rochester is now 13-20 overall and 4-2 in
the UCAA. HAMILTON SWEEPS ST. LAWRENCE IN SOFTBALL
April 26: Amy Greenan singled to drive in the winning run with
two outs in the top of the eighth and Amanda Fix shut down St. Lawrence in the
bottom of the eighth to give Hamilton College an 8-7 win and a sweep of its softball
doubleheader in Canton on Friday. In the first game of the twinbill,
Hamilton jumped out to a 5-0 lead and then held off a Saint rally for a 6-5 win.
The Continentals improve to 12-12 overall while St. Lawrence is now 13-15 heading
into a doubleheader at Rochester Saturday. In the first game,
winning pitcher Karen Pogonowski tripled in a run in the first inning and scored
on Stephanie Dunn's home run and Amanda Fix and Krista Marran hit run scoring
doubles for the Continentals in the third. Tricia King came on in relief of Saint
starter Heather Tuttle and checked Hamilton's offense, while the Saints got two
back in the fifth when Meredith Eisenhut, who was three for four in the game,
singled in Krystina Gotsch and Nikki Lopez. The Saints threatened
again in the sixth when it put two runners on with none out, but Pogonowski worked
out of the jam. Erica Gomez homered for Hamilton with one out in the top of the
seventh to make it a 6-2 game and while the Saints got three back in the bottom
of the seventh, they couldn't plate the tying run. Ashley Porter led off with
a double and scored when Lopez reached on an error and Eisenhut hit a run-scoring
double, but was thrown out trying for third. Michelle Circelli then doubled and
scored on Kelly McAuley's two out single before Pogonowski got the final out on
a fly ball. St. Lawrence had a 5-3 lead heading into the top of
the sixth inning in the nightcap, but Hamilton rallied for four runs to take a
7-5 lead. Greenan, Erica Gomez and Niki Dafoe had run-scoring singles in the rally.
The Saints came back to tie in the bottom of the seventh as Lopez
and Eisenhut reached on bunt singles and scored on sacrifice flies by Circelli
and April Regonlinski. Eisenhut was four-for-four in the nightcap for the Saints
and is hitting .700 in her last six games. SAINTS
GAIN SPLIT WITH UNION April 24: Meredith Eisenhut scored
from third on April Regonlinski's squeeze bunt in the bottom of the sixth inning
to give the Saints a 2-1 win as St. Lawrence University's softball team gained
an Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association split with Union College Wednesday
afternoon. Union, now 15-12-1 overall and 2-4 in the UCAA rode
the bats of Jill Ring, Meredith Chase and Karyn Rautenberg and Sarah Johnston's
pitching to a 6-3 win in the first game. Ring, went three for
three and Chase and Rautenberg were two for four each as Union used a four-run
third inning to take the lead and Johnston held off the Saints for her eighth
win of the year. Michelle Circelli hit a two-run homer for the Saints and Nicole
Lopez and Kelly McAuley had two hits each. Trisha King shut out
Union for five innings in the nightcap before the Dutchwomen tied the game with
an unearned run in the top of the sixth. The Saints came right back to retake
the lead when Eisenhut led off with a single and Circelli's fly ball to the fence
was mishandled for a two-base error. Regonlinski then dropped a bunt down the
first base line and Eisenhut easily beat the flip at home to score the game winner.
Eisenhut had the only two hits for the Saints off losing pitcher
Shanna O'Brien while Chase, Rautenberg and Melinda Colon had two hits each for
Union. King improved to 4-2 on the season and struck out three for the win. The
Saints, now 13-13 overall and 2-2 in the UCAA will host Hamilton for two games
on Friday at 3:30. SAINTS SWEEP
DOUBLEHEADER FROM POTSDAM, 10-2, 4-3 April 23: Freshman
Heather Tuttle was the winning pitcher in both games of a doubleheader and St.
Lawrence University's softball team used its speed on the bases to sweep Potsdam
State 10-2 and 4-3 at Saints Softball Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Saints, now 12-12 overall, jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first game and
after Potsdam got two runs back on losing pitcher Rian Rebideau's double in the
fourth, the Saints scored six runs over the next three innings and ended the game
early under the eight-run rule. Meredith Eisenhut went two for
four to lead the Saints at the plate while Michelle Circelli hit a two run double
in a four-run fifth. Katie Lemery went two for two for Potsdam in the opener.
Potsdam jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the nightcap, combining
pitcher Kari Brady's first inning double with a pair of errors, and made it a
3-0 game in the top of the fourth when Stacy Jenkins singled in Michelle Cross
who had doubled. Brady retired the first nine Saints to face her
in order, but SLU started a comeback with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Nikki
Lopez had a bunt single and was sacrificed to second, moving to third on Eisenhut's
bunt single. Lopez then scored on a passed ball to make it a 3-1 game.
The Saints cut it to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth when starting pitcher Tricia
King doubled. Tuttle went in to run and advanced to third on Val Angelichio's
single, scoring on April Regonlinski's sacrifice fly. Tuttle shut
out Potsdam in the final two innings and the Saints made her the winner as Ashley
Porter led off the bottom of the sixth with a sharp single. Eisenhut then laid
down a bunt single with Porter going to third, and both runners ended up scoring
when the throw got away at first and a return throw to the plate to try to get
Eisenhut went wide to give the Saints their 4-3 lead. The Saints
will continue a marathon week at home with a UCAA doubleheader against Union Wednesday
at 3 p.m. SAINTS
FACE BUSY WEEK AFTER WINNING THREE OF FOUR April 22: St.
Lawrence University's softball team faces a hectic week with ten games in six
days after going 3-1 in a weekend series at Russell Sage and Rensselaer. The
Saints, who beat Russell Sage 10-0 and 7-0 on Saturday and handed RPI its first
UCAA loss 5-4 in the first of two Sunday before bowing 6-0 in the nightcap, will
play their first home games of the year Tuesday when they host Potsdam in a rescheduled
doubleheader. They then host Union at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, host Hamilton at 3:30
on Friday, play two at Rochester on Saturday and host Skidmore for two at 2 p.m.
on Sunday. Shortstop Meredith Eisenhut led the Saints on their
3-1 tour of Troy as she had eight hits including two triples, scored four times
and drove in seven runs in the four games. Freshman Tricia King had five hits
and scored three runs, driving in two to go with a shutout victory in the second
game against Russell Sage. Freshman Heather Tuttle opened the
series with a five-inning pitching gem against Russell Sage as she did not allow
a hit until a single with one out in the bottom of the fifth. The
Saints ended the game early as they batted around and scored six runs in the second
with the key hit a two-run single by Krystina Gotsch and a run-scoring triple
by Eisenhut. The Saints scored a run in the fourth on a single by Eisenhut, who
stole third after advancing on a ground out and Nikki Lopez singled her home.
Eisenhut had a two run single to cap a three-run fifth and end the game early.
King gave up eight hits in the nightcap, but did not allow a run
and the Saints put the game away with a five run fourth. Eisenhut's three run
driple highlighted the big inning and King tripled in a run in the fifth to give
the Saints the sweep. RPI took a 2-0 lead into the sixth in the
first of two at Troy on Sunday, but the Saints rallied for five runs in the fifth.
Eisenhut singled in one run, Michelle Circelli doubled in two and King doubled
to score another run in the decisive inning for the Saints. RPI rallied with two
runs in the bottom of the sixth, but Tuttle pitched out of trouble to pick up
the victory. Ali O'Connor held the Saints to three singles in
the nightcap and RPI scored four in the second to earn the second game shutout.
The Saints will take a 10-12 overall mark and a 1-1 league record into their busy

LOSING SKID WITH 2ND GAME WIN AT MIDDLEBURY April 16:
St. Lawrence University's softball team found its hitting stroke in the second
game of a double header and snapped a seven game losing streak with a 7-2 win
over the Panthers Tuesday afternoon. Middlebury won the first game 2-0 on a four-hitter.
Megan McCarthy pitched the first game win for Middlebury, striking
out four, while Heather Tuttle was the tough-luck loser, surrendering single runs
in the fourth and sixth and allowing seven hits overall with three strikeouts.
The Saints, now 7-11, bounced back in the second game, overcoming
a 2-0 Middlebury lead with a four run third. Michelle Circelli had a run scoring
single and Kelly McAuley hit a run scoring double in the big third inning for
the Saints as SLU had 11 hits overall. Tricia King struck out five and evened
her record at 2-2 with the victory. PLATTSBURGH
TAKES TWO ONE-RUN WINS; SAINTS AT HOME SATURDAY April 10:
Jaja Cabilit opened the bottom of the eighth inning with a bunt single, stole
second, went to third on a passed ball and scored on Jenny Reyell's single to
lift Plattsburgh State to a 4-3 victory over St. Lawrence in the first of a softball
doubleheader at Plattsburgh on Wednesday and Plattsburgh scored two in the bottom
of the sixth inning to complete the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap. Plattsburgh,
now 14-6, took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in the opening game, but
the Saints tied it in the second when Val Angelichio scored on an outfield error.
The Saints took a 2-1 led in the third on Michelle Circelli's run-scoring double
and made it 3-1 in the fifth when Circelli singled and scored on an infield error.
Plattsburgh rallied for two in the sixth to tie it on Majo Cabalit's two-run triple.
Lisa Marlow pitched the win for Plattsburgh while Heather Tuttle
took the loss for the Saints. Circelli went three for five and Kelly McAuley had
a pair of hits for the Saints in the first game. The Saints, now
6-10, took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap as Meredith Eisenhut
led off with a hit, stole third and scored on April Regonlinski's fielder's choice.
Plattsburgh tied it on a balk in the bottom of the second, but the Saints regained
the lead in the third as Eisenhut singled, advanced to second on a scarfice and
scored on Tricia King's double. Plattsburgh rallied in the bottom
of the sixth for the win on two singles, an outfield error and a dropped third
strike. Missy Darrah pitched the win for Plattsburgh while King
took the loss for the Saints. Eisenhut, King and Nicole Lopez had two hits each
for the Saints. SLU will open UCAA play with doubleheaders at
home against Skidmore and Union Saturday and Sunday. CORTLAND
POSTS SWEEP, 9-1, 11-1 Annemarie Cangilosi limited the
Saints to four hits in five innings and Cortland scored seven times in the bottom
of the fifth for a 9-1 win over St. Lawrence in the first of a doubleheader on
Sunday and a six run second inning and another four-hitter topped the Saints 11-1
in the second game. Cortland improved to 14-5 overall while the
Saints are now 6-8 heading into a Wednesday doubleheader at Plattsburgh. Heather
Tuttle took the first game loss for the Saints after battling Cangiolosi on near
even terms into the fifth inning. Cortland scored two runs in the second, one
earned, and the Saints cut it to 2-1 in the fourth when Tricia King singled and
scored on an error, but the roof fell in on the Saints in the fifth. Julie Gentner
hit a leadoff triple and Cortland strung together eight hits to end the game early
when it built an eight run lead with two outs. Cortland stayed
hot to start the second game of the doubleheader and put up eight runs in the
first two innings to complete the sweep. King and Michelle Circelli had doubles
in the second game for the Saints with King taking the loss on the mound.
ITHACA SWEEPS SAINTS IN TWINBILL
Abby Hanrahan threw a five hit shutout, striking out ten, to lead
Ithaca to a 7-0 win over St. Lawrence in softball in the first of a doubleheader
Saturday and earned a save in the second game, a 11-3 win as the 12th ranked Bombers
swept the Saints. Meredith Eisenhut went two for three in both
games to lead the Saints at the plate. Val Angelichio had a double in the first
game and April Regonlinski and Nicole Lopez added singles. Kerri Barber had three
hits and drove in three runs for the Bombers. In the second game,
the Saints came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the
second, but Ithaca retook the lead and then ended the game with a five run fifth.
The Bombers had 15 hits led by Mairin Dudek, who was four for four and drove in
three runs. Abby Pelot pitched the victory, striking out seven while Heather Tuttle
took the loss in both games for the Saints. Michelle Circelli
and Angelichio joined Eisenhut with the Saint hits in the nightcap. SLU, now 6-6,
is scheduled to play at Cortland on Sunday. SAINTS
GO 6-4 ON SOUTHERN SWING March 25: St. Lawrence University
senior multi-sport star Meredith Eisenhut didn't wait long to get in the swing
of things on the softball field. Eisenhut, who helped the Saints
to a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division III basketball finals on Saturday,
hopped a plane Sunday and joined the Saint softball team in Florida on Monday.
Eisenhut went two for four in her first game, helping the Saints to a 5-1 win
over Amherst and then added a four for four performances with four steals and
four runs scored in a 9-3 win over previously unbeaten Babson in her third game
of the trip. The Saint senior finished the 10-game southern tour
with a .571 batting average with 16 hits in 28 at bats, 13 runs scored, two doubles,
two triples, five runs driven in and was a perfect eight for eight in stolen bases
as the Saints went 6-4 in Florida. The Saints are scheduled to
open the Northern portion of their schedule with a doubleheader at home against
Elmira on Saturday, weather and field conditions permitting. The
Saints opened the trip with a 3-2 win over Smith and lost to Keene 3-1 in the
second game of the opening day. They then beat Amherst, but lost 9-2 to Bowdoin
for splits in their first two days of action. The 9-3 win over Babson started
a three game win streak which included a 3-2 win over Pine Manor and a 6-0 shutout
of Trinity before Southern Maine rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh
for a 6-5 win and Knox held off a Saint rally for a 7-6 win. The Saints completed
the trip with a five inning 15-4 rout of LaSell College. Freshman
Nicole Lopez had an impressive softball debut for the Saints, hitting .438 and
playing perfect defense in the field in the ten games. Catcher Michelle Circelli
hit .419 and led the team with eight runs driven in while April Regonlinski hit
.357 with six runs driven in and freshman pitcher Heather Tuttle hit .345 while
going 5-4 on the mound. |
