SAINTS TO RAISE MONEY FOR CANCER RESEARCH

Feb. 7: Athletes participating in several sports at St. Lawrence University are teaming up to raise money for cancer research at a number of home athletic events throughout the month of February.

 

The Saints’ men’s and women’s ice hockey teams will participate in ECAC Hockey’s ‘Pink at the Rink’ event, which is a “newly created variation of a traditional ‘Coaches vs. Cancer’ program that will provide critical outreach, while raising funds in support of the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving cancer research, education, advocacy, and community service efforts”, according to the ECAC Hockey website.

 

The men’s team will show their support this weekend, February 8 and 9 against Colgate and Cornell, as each of the coaches will be sporting pink ties. The women’s team will wear specially designed pink jerseys and use pink hockey sticks in warm-ups during their home series against Yale and Brown on Friday, February 15 and Saturday, February 16. Those jerseys and coaches’ ties will then be auctioned off with proceeds going to the American Cancer Society, along with half of the gate for the weekend series. All winners/buyers of the pink jerseys will receive a complimentary 2008-09 women’s hockey season pass for all regular season home games.

 

In addition to the auctions through ECAC Hockey, the St. Lawrence University women’s hockey team will be making pink ribbons of hope, which will be distributed for donations throughout the St. Lawrence University Community.  The Saints are looking to keep the donations collected in the North Country by contributing to a local breast cancer support group.  In addition to the ribbon distribution, the Saints will also raffle off five of the limited edition pink hockey sticks, signed by the team, and will combine the proceeds with those of each game’s 50/50 raffle. 

 

The Saints’ men’s and women’s basketball teams will participate in “Think Pink”, an event created by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to raise awareness for breast cancer on Saturday, February 16. The Saints will ask for donations at the door throughout both games against Liberty League opponent Hamilton, and will be donating the money to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, the official WBCA charity.
