A MESSAGE FROM THE CLUB PRESIDENT
April 2008
To members of the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club
I’m not sure if the old adage “a picture is worth a thousand words: is entirely accurate. As I was pouring over some old New Yorker magazines, however, I saw a cartoon which seemed to sum up my feelings about golf as the season approaches. In the cartoon, a man with a golf cap on his head looks into his hall closet and sees his golf bag. Instead of his mashies and niblicks, there is an umbrella, a rake, a hoe and a snow shovel. Clearly the clubs and the game have been abandoned over the winter months. While we lament the fact that many of us have ignored our woods and irons while we raked leaves and shoveled snow (and then shoveled more snow) there is also a sense of awakening in the golfer at the closet door. What is clear is that it signals a time to get those clubs and your game together again.
The Board of Governors of the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club want to welcome new members and returning members to the 2008 golfing season. We are also pleased to welcome back Mary Lawrence, our LPGA pro and her Home Town Golf Group staff who oversee the management of our course. Mary has put together a wonderful team who work hard to make our time at the course a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
Work on the new Best Western pool and recreational facility, that last year provided us some talking point on the building trades, has been completed. Now plans are afoot to make the necessary modifications to that group of tees so that the first hole can be reclaimed. Jin Hennessey and his crew deserve credit for keeping that construction project from becoming a serious problem for golfers. Last year also saw a number of improvements to the course. New work on the putting green as well as continued work on tee boxes and cart paths is planned this year.
The first year of the newly expanded clubhouse has made the lounge and bar area a more welcoming space. The covered deck and now sun-shaded scoreboard are two additional improvements that came with the renovations of last year. Again we wish to thank Preston Carlisle for his generosity in making this expansion possible.
Members are reminded that according to the provisions of a new lease made in agreement with St. Lawrence University in 2007 that a work day is required of our membership in lieu of an annual fee. We intend to solicit your participation in a spring work session to be held on Saturday May 3 at 8 a.m. Further details will be posted at the clubhouse. A light lunch and a nine hole event will follow the 2-3 hour work session. Those of you who participated last year may remember that in addition to helping clean up some rough areas that many were able to make a significant addition to their shag bag with golf balls found under those oak and maple leaves.
The Board of Governors meets monthly during the season and welcomes members who wish to attend these sessions. Dates of these meetings will be made available in the clubhouse. A binder can be found in the clubroom which will have the SLG&CC constitution and minutes from the board meetings. As representatives of the membership, we encourage all members to discuss issues or problems with any members of the board. With your support we hope to making golfing at the St. Lawrence Golf and Country Club the best golfing experience in the North Country.
See you on the first tee,
Guy Berard, president
